Reading this weird paper about #ethics in #datascience
The brief story is this: researchers wanted to study crowdsourcing. They were going to scrape the data from a large crowdsourcing site but then realised that the same user data had been hacked and was available online. The moral quandary was whether to use the data.
My question is this: it is obviously wrong to use hacked data. So how is it morally fine to use the same data if you obtained it by scraping rather than hacking?

The topic of #ethics specifically in #datascience reminds me of the story of the Quaker pacifist who taught in a military college. I think the idea was to challenge the young soldiers with ideas from someone they'd never normally encounter.
I wonder if it had any impact.

For example we are told that the norm is to be concerned about #privacy.
Which specifically seems untrue.
People are only generally concerned when their own privacy is impacted. Nobody is really concerned when a criminal has their privacy invaded.
It's not really possible to have the latter without the former. #ethics #datasccience

It strikes me that if you can't argue ethics from principles and instead argue that they are "shared norms" then you are obviously going to have trouble when those norms obviously are not shared.

There are too many "hobby" businesses around which pay minimum wages to employees and make little money so pay no tax. Owners either pay themselves a nice dividend or are just looking to sell at a profit.

Here's an exercise from this #ethics in #datascience course.
A murder has been recorded on an Amazon echo device in a home. Given the participants haven't explicitly consented to the recording is it ethical (ignoring legality for the moment) for it to be passed to police?
This feels like a trick question; if you say yes then why not record everything always in case a crime is accidentally recorded? If no, then you are possibly preventing a crime being prosecuted

So here's a thing.
You live in a country where littering historically has been seen as a bad thing. However for various reasons, litter is not collected today and it is piling up.
Is it ethical or unethical to throw litter? It seems obvious that it is unethical, and yet the social norm appears to have changed so that littering has become normal.
So #ethics isn't just about social norms. And littering when everyone else is littering doesn't seem that bad.

Remembering many years ago I was in London with my wife for our anniversary. We were doing some things from a '50 unusual things to do in London' type book.
One thing I really enjoyed was going to a second hand bookshop. The thing that was special about this particular shop was that it was all cook books and every day they would cook and sell cakes from a different recipe book.
I'd like to have a shop like that.

well with respect, in the current environment we can't expect the PM to stand in a crowd at a football match.
