I dislike thinking about this, but is anyone exploring future impacts to Canada’s largest cities from the US descent into authoritarianism?
Refugees fleeing north will disproportionately impact Toronto and Vancouver, for example, and Montreal far less due to perceived language barrier. But I’m interested (well, maybe concerned is a better word) about larger-scale and directed impacts, like “cut that cross-border pipeline to make Ottawa stay docile”, or “let Russia have some Canadian arctic”.

Holy crap. In the EU, fuel consumption monitoring devices are required on new cars. They studied over 10% of all cars sold in 2021 and turns out they use way more fuel, and generate way more CO2, than anybody thought. Nearly a quarter more. Plug-in Hybrids do poorly too.
This means our projections about getting cars off the road for the climate crisis is hugely undercounting the effects. More rail, more e-bikes, more electric, faster.

He helped support the King Street Pilot (the now-permanent streetcar priority corridor) in downtown Toronto, but it’s been all downhill since then. To no one’s surprise, Poilievre’s favourite crime stat is untrue. 40 violent people were not arrested 6,000 times in a year.
1. it’s 40 people involved in *property* crime (“mischief or theft or vandalism”).
2. It’s 6,000 times someone was considered a suspect, or recommended for charges, or actually charged.
Example from me: 5 teens graffiti a store & get off with warning. Now they’re on the suspect list for weekly graffiti the rest of the year. = 250/6000.

It’s popular to think social media harms teens. There is no data to support this. But study after study shows it’s not true.
The head of Common Sense Media, which as a parent I used to think was a useful resource, is pushing nonstop falsehoods and gut feelings on this topic, in support of a dangerous California ballot initiative.

The reason? The new riding boundaries and counts take effect next summer. This changes include removing a seat in Toronto and adding multiple seats in Alberta and BC.

Two Friday thoughts:
1. An election isn’t a marriage, it’s just a bus. No candidate is going to be a lifelong match for your needs, so you catch the one who’ll get you closer to your destination. That doesn’t mean you think they’re perfect, it just means they’re the right fit at this time.

Montréal suburb Brossard has a traffic light in a school zone that defaults to red, and only turns green when an attached speed camera detects a car driving under the speed limit.
The light is on a 90-day trial, on a 2-lane residential street. Similar signals are widespread across Europe.
Before it was installed, average vehicle speeds of 40 km/h. But in the past week, average speeds have dropped to 29 km/h.

What is missing from the TTC is a consolidated overview of all of the changes for this summer, not a route by route view and pages that are in some cases very well hidden on their website. 7/ Construction at Coxwell and Lower Gerrard will affect streetcar and bus service in the area over the summer. The 506 Carlton service will be replaced by a bus. See https://ttc.ca/about-the-ttc/projects-and-plans/Gerrard-and-Coxwell Carlton cars will be rerouted via Broadview to Woodbine Loop at Queen and Kingston Rd.

5/ The 503 Kingston Road bus that goes from Bingham Loop (at Victoria Park) to York via King will be replaced by an extension of 505 Dundas east via Broadview, Queen and Kingston Road. A date for the 503's return to King has not been announced.

4/ Effective May 7 the 504B King and 505 Dundas streetcars will be replaced on Broadview by a 504/505 shuttle bus from Broadview Stn to King & Parliament. The full 504 King route from Dundas West will revert to streetcar operation with all cars going to Distillery Loop.

3/ One reason the Queen diversion starts at Broadview is that there will be repair work on the Queen Don Bridge starting May 7. TTC has not yet posted notices for this, but it combines with planned construction work on Broadview north from Gerrard to affect many routes.

2/ As I write this, the TTC is still unsure what will happen with the 504 King car that is still scheduled to be on Queen Street until May 6. They hope to have construction on King finished so they can move the 504B Broadview Stn service back to King before Monday. Stay tuned.

Doug Ford & Ana Bailão’s big plan — demolish the Ontario Science Centre and build a small new science museum at Ontario Place, concocted as a way to distract from the private spa company given the entire West Island for 95 years (!) — is even more fake than I realized.
Nothing new can be built in the ravine. The only place to build is the parking lots, which are owned by the City of Toronto, which already has plans for housing there!
