From the late 1880s until 1909, Clara Driscoll made a profound impact on the artistic output of Tiffany Studios. In 1892, she took on management of the Women's Glass Cutting Dept, with the autonomy to design her own lamp shades, including the Dragonfly lamp.
Thanks to her personal correspondence and a circa 1900 profile in the NY Daily News, she is now rightfully credited with the design of several of Tiffany’s most iconic leaded glass lamp models.

"Spinster" denoted unmarried women who spun wool. Highly skilled spinsters were paid enough to afford not to marry. Despite later applied derogatory connotations, it's origin is a word that included independent women who rejected marriage and male partners entirely.

The most ancient rings found to date belong to the Paleolithic period and come from the site of Pavlov in the Czech Republic. They are made of mammoth bone and are 21,000 years old. One theory is that in the beginning rings were used as an exchange unit, with easy and secure “storage” on the fingers.

Yvonne Walker Keshick is one of the finest quillwork artists in North America.
An Odawa tribe member, she received the nation’s highest honor for folk and traditional arts in 2014, when she joined the ranks of the prestigious National Heritage Fellowships, a lifetime honor awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Descended from a long line of Odawa/Ojibwa quillworkers, she has passed along the tradition to her sons and daughter.

Montreal-based artist Raku Inoue used sticks, seeds and petals to create his Natura Insects series. “I think about the main shape of the insect,” he says, “and try to find something to satisfy that. It’s very much like a puzzle."
The series started as a morning routine over coffee to sharpen his thoughts for the day. “It was never meant to be a complex process, but rather an easygoing, morning mind-stretching exercise.”

Cristina Arcenegui Bono's signature quilts are pictorial wholecloths. Her whimsical images reflect her love for vintage children books, as well as illustrations from coloring books and selected copyright-free images.
She began quilting in 1999 and bought her first long arm quilting machine in 2005. She started her own machine quilting business six months later.
She gives workshops, and has exhibited widely in the U.S.

Continuing his work through the French Revolution & Reign of Terror, his patrons included both of Napoleon's wives and the wife of the last king of France.
Nicknamed "the Raphael of flowers"; he has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time.

My birdbath garden at mom's old cottage. Bumblebees loved the globe thistle, fritillary butterflies swarmed the coneflowers, and the red bee-balm was guaranteed to draw ruby-throat hummingbirds. There's a serviceberry tree to the left of the glider and a witch hazel tree in the border behind it. A mail-order ginseng plant liked this location and reseeded itself. Photo by my mom.

Women weren't allowed to major in genetics when Barbara McClintock attended Cornell, so she earned her PhD in botany instead.
Working on the chromosomal activity of maize in the '40s and '50s, she discovered genetic transposition, proving that genes turn physical characteristics on and off.
Initially met with skepticism, her work was confirmed in the '60s and '70s; she won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983.
