Hypatia (born c. 350–370; died 415 AD) was a Neoplatonist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician who lived in Alexandria, Egypt.
She was a prominent thinker in Alexandria where she taught philosophy and astronomy. Hypatia constructed astrolabes and hydrometers, but did not invent either of these, which were both in use long before she was born. In March 415 AD, she was murdered by a mob of Christians led by a lector named Peter.

William Thomson, Baron Kelvin Irish engineer, mathematician, and physicist died #OTD in 1907.
Absolute temperatures are stated in units of kelvin in his honour. While the existence of a coldest possible temperature, known as absolute zero, was known prior to his work, Kelvin is known for determining its correct value as approximately −273.15 degrees Celsius. Kelvin's work in thermodynamics led to the idea that energy can not pass spontaneously from a colder object to a hotter object.

In 1896 she became a member of ‘Pickering’s Women’, a group of women hired by Harvard Observatory director Edward Charles Pickering to process astronomical data &, in particular, to complete the Draper Catalogue of Stellar Spectra. #OnThisDay in 1935 Erwin Schrödinger published his famous thought experiment (sometimes described as a paradox of quantum superposition), Schrödinger's cat.
Schrödinger imagined a cat in a box together with a radioactive source. Alongside the cat was a radiation detector which, upon registering a radioactive decay, would cause a hammer to fall and break open a flask of deadly poison that would kill the cat immediately.

Austrian Actress Hedy Lamarr (Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler) was born #OTD in 1914 (not 1913).
At the beginning of World War II, she and avant-garde composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Austrian Physicist Lise Meitner was born #OTD in 1878. She was the first to pinpoint the atomic phenomenon now known as the Auger effect, but it was credited to Pierre Auger who independently discovered it months after her. Years later when she made a breakthrough in identifying and understanding nuclear fission, her findings were published only under the name of her collaborator, Otto Hahn, who later also received the Nobel Prize for this discovery. via @IAEA

Founded by the inventor of e-books, Project Gutenberg is the oldest digital library. Its banned books collection is based on author and book collector Anne Haight’s “Banned Books: Informal Notes on Some Books Banned for Various Reasons at Various Times and in Various Places.” While Haight’s book was published in 1978, some of the included titles are still being challenged in the U.S. today.

Edison filed his first patent application for "Improvement in Electric Lights" on 14 October 1878. The metre is defined as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second #OTD in 1983.
After the 2019 redefinition of the SI base units, this definition was rephrased to include the definition of a second in terms of the caesium frequency Δν_Cs. Mathematician & inventor Charles Babbage died #OTD in 1871.
Babbage is considered by some to be "father of the computer". He is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer, the Difference Engine, that eventually led to more complex electronic designs, though all the essential ideas of modern computers are to be found in Babbage's Analytical Engine, programmed using a principle openly borrowed from the Jacquard loom.

He played a pioneering role in the measurement of doses of radiation especially in its use in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In later years, he focused his research on the biological effects of repeated exposure to low doses of radiation. He was a founder of the International X-ray and Radium Protection Committee (later became ICRP) in 1928. He also chaired the UNSCEAR.

He was an English radiochemist who explained, with Ernest Rutherford, that radioactivity is due to the transmutation of elements, now known to involve nuclear reactions. He also proved the existence of isotopes of certain radioactive elements.

He was one of the first people to demonstrate the illusion of a moving image. To do this, he used counterrotating disks with repeating drawn images in small increments of motion on one and regularly spaced slits in the other. He called this device of 1832 the phenakistiscope. via @npub1kvn…hm73
