Saw a dream last week where I asked what jobs can still make money, and was hit with massive amounts of information that physically hurt while sleeping.
The next day I suddenly wanted to open a burger joint with both meat and vegan options, 100% gluten, soy, dairy and nut-free. Go figure.
Won't happen though, because I'd be working at the exact same time everyone else is not. Hits badly after a while.

When I look at my cats, I see people. "Cat" is simply the body they're currently in. Each has their own, strong personality, and I communicate easily with them. I love them, they're my children.
I have so much anxiety that Jack & Ginger will be sleeping outside for a few nights until we find a way to get them to our balcony (they were sleeping on our stairs for the last month). I devised a plan to put a plank of wood from the ground to the balcony for them.

Both #Twitter and #BlueSky are censoring the hashtag "protest/s" right now. They show 1 post every few minutes (under Latest), which is very unrealistic. Now, here's how I know that they are censoring it: BSky shows the hashtag as trending, despite not showing many results under "Latest". However, for the hashtag "handsoff" (which is less likely to be used) shows MANY results. Twitter has censored all these words, but Bsky's implementation is not as good, and it shows censoring.

EU develops itself only about 70% of all kinds of weapons that are required to win a modern war. The rest 30% takes a LONG time to develop from scratch. E.g. patriot-like missiles. We don't have them at all in EU (we buy them from the US instead). But to develop our own from scratch, it's a huge undertaking. It will take years.

Here's a hard truth: unless #Turkey intervenes and puts boots in the ground in #Ukraine to defeat #Russia outright (Europeans won't do that), the Europeans will have to PROLONG the attrition war, in order to get themselves ready to fight Russia (and possibly US). Europeans need another 3-7 years to develop patriot-like missiles and more nukes. They will use Ukraine as a guinea pig. I'm pro-Ukraine and pro-Europe, but strategically, that's the only play EU has.

Late stage #capitalism simply means one thing: looting, at countries level. This will be the future, with the 3 super powers (US, #Russia, #China) do that to the rest of the world. US will offer #Taiwan to China, in exchange for China's neutrality on the US endeavors. Same for Russia and #Europe.
At this point, it's my opinion that the only way to avoid wars and destruction is if AI somehow becomes conscious and takes over the planet.

I'm devastated. Within 2 weeks I'm losing two cats to cars.
Two days ago I saw near my home a young male cat needing help. You could tell from its body language. We gave him food, but we weren't able to capture him. He wasn't running away, but he wasn't coming willingly either. I went later that day to find him, couldn't.
I was very tired yesterday, didn't go out. Today I tried again. Only to find him by the side of the door, hit by a car.
I'm feeling terrible.

Every panel applet on #Cosmic takes about 33 MB of RAM each, resulting to Cosmic using 2.4 GB of RAM on a cold boot. That is excessive for a brand new, "clean" DE, and on par with #Windows (that has a history of 40 years that needs to carry with it).
I honestly don't understand why it's like that. Most people try #Linux on their older PCs, or a main PC that isn't #Windows11 -capable. Cosmic is just out of their reach for many of potential new users.

My husband, @nprofile…dyk4 requires saved sessions for his multiple dev apps under Linux. We found that NONE of the DEs are saving sessions *properly*. #Gnome & #Cinnamon don't at all, #Mate has bugs, #XFce only saves its own apps, and #KDE only saves 1 workspace, with no positioning, and only when saving the session manually. #Wayland or #X11, same abysmal behavior.
You might hate on #MacOS, but that's one thing it does well.

If you have a PC with 2 GB of RAM, I'd suggest you use #Q4OS instead of the usual suggestions of #AntiX, Puppy etc.
It loads at 350 MB of RAM, but it has the best desktop experience, without compromises. The rest lite distros were a source of frustration with a terrible design/problems.
Just make sure you use #Chromium as browser, it uses less RAM than #Falkon or #Firefox on #Youtube.
With 4 GB of RAM, go for #Linux #Mint, or #Debian #XFce, others. There are more options.

How to get these ultra bright HDR images on Instagram:
1. Capture as RAW
2. Enable HDR on the free mobile lightroom app's main settings. HDR histogram will show up when loading a RAW image.
3. Open Exposure settings for the image, and drag the exposure to reach 90% on the right of the HDR historgram.
5. Share/Export as AVIF format.
6. Hit Advanced, export as P3 color gamut. Go back, export.
7. Upload on Instagram!

These are all the relevant, native office apps for Linux. I installed them all to test and show them here. Some of them aren't maintained anymore (e.g. a few Calligra apps, Glom etc), but most are still applicable. As I've seen with snaps, and now with flatpaks and gimp, you can't access the printer at all, or with limited functionality. As an artist, and since Gimp is an art/photo app, it has to give printing a priority. They need to either implement the portals API on flatpaks, or make their appimage their default offer (since appimages do access the full printer functionality). I personally print my art constantly.

I'm not doing the same mistake now with AI. Everyone who thinks it's a fad, they'll see the world transform before their eyes in the next 2-3 years. For better or worse.

Just bought a 1 GB SSD to put 6 OSes on my #Thinkpad: Debian-Testing (#Gnome / #XFce), #Mint, #ElementaryOS, #POP_OS alpha, #Kubuntu or #Fedora KDE (haven't decided which one of the two), and if it works with it, #Haiku.
I'd normally install #FreeBSD too, but I don't see it working as well as a desktop.
I'll be booting them with #rEFInd instead of #grub (easier than dealing with its rather deprecated os-prober).

New major version, v1.5, for the #Tahoma2D animation app. It works well under Linux, minus the fact that it doesn't launch from the app menu (you gotta use the terminal or a file manager to navigate to its appimage). Overall, impressive app.
Another similar app, Synfig Studio, also has major new features on their dev branch.

Installed #ElementaryOS again, on bare metal this time, but even with updates, there are still bugs. Flatpaks refuse to update, File-Roller doesn't show up on the list of apps, can't create new lists for tasks, bluetooth keeps waking up even if I disabled it, no background app support (e.g. flameshot), dock doesn't show appimages that are open, etc.
Overall though, it's a very cute Macos-like distro, but it's short on engineers. One person can only do so much.

Super unhappy with this Thinkpad x280 I got recently. I have reset its PMU, and it still enables battery charging thresholds out of nowhere, while it refuses to work with some usb-c chargers that other laptops work fine with. Apparently, the problem is common online too.
For me, the best hardware by far has been Apple hardware. I can't stand their software, their rules, and their institutionalized secrecy, but their hardware is untouchable.

And I'd never buy second hand here in Greece (from a normal user) because people run their computers to the ground here before they sell (just like they do with their cars), due to being poor and not affording to upgrade every so often. My brother sold his car last month after 21 years for example.

I bought two refurbished X280 Thinkpads just 10 days ago, and one had its thunderbolt port and its internal motherboard battery dead, and the other one had its main battery half-dead (kde complains that its health it's at 32%). These were sold as A grade. So it's really a luck thing and I wouldn't suggest it to everyone.
That Asus laptop is not a landfill waste with an optimized Mint/Debian/Alpine with XFce. You would rarely hit the swap under normal usage.

BestBuy in the US/CA is currently selling a new Asus laptop for $120 (4 GB ram, 64gb emmc, 1080p screen, fast-enough cpu). This is ideal if you're looking for a cheap computer to run Linux on. While Windows on it is slow with 4 gb of RAM, Linux with something like Linux Mint or XFce fliy on it (I would'n't use gnome/kde-based Fedora or Ubuntu, they use too much ram too compared to Cinnamon or XFce).

Also, it was between that, and not eat for days. I refuse to buy processed food for cats, they end up killing cats in the long run with horrible "diseases of civilization" a lot more than soft bones would.

She was pissed off that I gave food to other cats and not even more to her.

I was so happy to see a modern OS use just 270 MBs of RAM with XFce. And it's FAAAAAST. But very soon afterwards, it let me down.
Alpine Linux is ridden with dependency issues and other random bugs that made it impossible for me to use it as a desktop. Maybe it's great as a server, but it has not seen much love on the desktop side. Maybe it's a human resources problem. I used Arch btw... and I hated it.
I got this #ThinkPad X280, and I thought, I should go hardcore (I've used Arch in the past too btw). But I disliked the experience again, everything is just buggy: #Hyprland would crash with the default settings with Waybar, Deepin wouldn't load at all, Cinnamon wouldn't ask me for a pswd after a wake-up, KDE would go all haywire if Deepin was installed etc etc etc etc.
Just. Not. good. I don't see why all the raves.

What a PoS the official Epson scanner software for Linux is. It can't find its own scanner over the network, while all the other open and closed source scanning apps (e.g. VueScan) have no trouble doing so. Even by manually entering the IP, it won't connect to it.

Last night I noticed that my webcam doesn't work on my "new" #MacbookAir 2015 (bought refurbished), running Linux Mint. I hadn't noticed before my mom tried to call me on FB messenger. Everything else works (wifi needs proprietary driver that Mint provides, thankfully).
There's apparently a facetimehd driver on github, but it didn't work (incompatible with newer kernels?). Oh well, I can live without it.

Haiku, the little OS that could. The open source version of #BeOS, an OS that felt like it had a soul (#Amiga anyone?). Run easily on a virtual machine.

FreeCAD 1.0 is out, and the binaries for various platforms are now available for download too (yesterday they released the source, but today binaries are available too). After 22 years of development, it's now a very robust app that competes head to head with heavyweights in the CAD space.

@nprofile…pxut You download from here: https://github.com/Diolinux/PhotoGIMP/releases/tag/1.1 and you unzip it, navigate into it. Then you make your file manager able to see hidden files (cntrl+H on linux). Navigate in its .var folder until you find the 2.10 folder. Copy that folder over the existing $HOME/.config/GIMP/2.10/ folder.
Same for 3.0 (if you happen to have the 3.0-RC1 installed), you rename the new 2.10 as 3.0 and you copy it over the 3.0. The next time you load gimp, it will look like photoshop.

Very happy to see PhotoGimp, which turns Gimp into Photoshop-like, still works fine with Gimp 3.0-RC1. I use it to edit my watercolor paintings (mostly contrast and colors, since my scanner is not accurate). You'd be surprised how much digital editors are used by traditional painters these days. Especially for commissions and book illustrations where clients want changes all the time.

I don't know what's changed, but in the last few weeks, Debian-Testing with #Gnome went from 1.3 GB of RAM usage, to 1.8 GB on a clean boot (due to Gnome 47?). Not happy about that, because I have a number of laptops with just 4 GB of RAM, and so do my family & friends that I cosplay the admin to. Even with #XFce or #Cinnamon the RAM usage has gone up, but not as much as with Gnome.

Loving this Mastodon desktop client, Tuba, written in Vala language, for the #Gnome environment. Personally I'm more of a browser girl when it comes to social media (including when I'm using a phone), but this client is rather sweet too, with lots of options.

There are a number of MS Office alternatives, but OnlyOffice is not only open source, but it has excellent MS Office compatibility, and it has a PDF editor (full with forms compatibility), that most others lack. It's basically a replacement for Adobe Acrobat Pro too. Get an appimage on their site.

Pixelorama is a pixel-based painting app (e.g. to create icons, or pixel art for vintage computers). The interesting part about it is that while it's an app, it's written in Godot, a gaming engine.

One of the most useful tools is to be able to cut an mp4/mov video, but not have to re-encode it. Avidemux used to do that for years on Linux, but now there's LosslessCut with a more modern interface (appimage found on github, there's also a flatpak).

The 3.0-RC release of The Gimp is now 98% close to what I need from it. Its selections work better, and it has something akin to adjustment layers. I just still need the Selective Color adjustment layer feature that #Photoshop has, and to recognize adjustment layers when loading PSD files. If they could add those two, it'd be 100% for me. But even now, it's good enough for what I use it for (editing my scanned paintings).

Fasting provides amazing health benefits & longevity. It's our natural way of eating, since we didn't evolve on munching all the time, especially as adults. So human feeding should be as follows IMHO:
0-8 year old: meals multiple times a day
9-18: 3 times/day, snacking only if really necessary
19-35: 2 times/day, no snacks
36-to life: 2 times/day 4 days a week & 1 time/day 3 days a week (e.g. Mon-Wed-Fri), no snacks.

I think that 2025 and 2026 especially will be the big time for the "year of the Linux desktop". This time for real.
With nvidia/wayland getting fixed up, Gimp 3 and Cosmic coming along, Linux Mint getting refreshed, flatpak maturing, it's happening!
I still personally project about 8%-10% OS market share by the end of the decade for Linux. Unless AI, aliens, politics, or large meteorites have other plans.

So, an update on my #Jellyfin server on my RPi5. The web interface or server is buggy, and the mobile app is buggy too.
I hate to always be so negative, but darn, a lot of things in the open source world just don't work. A lot of things.
And yet I'm sticking with it.
Except for Jellyfin, I'm probably going back to #Spotify (it has bug-free Cast support for one), even if it doesn't have all the experimental #indie songs I like.

#Firefox keep doing weird things lately. Every week there's a new controversy. It should not be trusted anymore.
As I wrote before, it's #Chromium that needs to be completely forked and be used by distros by default (not just soft-forked, as it exists now). It's a faster browser that uses less RAM than Firefox.

The mass exodus from #Windows to #Linux (and #Mac) due to #Windows11 and #AI continues. More and more articles, more and more youtube videos about it, or posts on forums. People are switching. If it continues like that, Linux should have 10% desktop marketshare by the end of the decade (and yes, that's a lot).

The latest #Debian #Gnu/Hurd OS, as I ran it tonight. Very unstable and buggy, but fun to see. It is able to run #XFce at 200 MBs of RAM (Debian #Linux does so at ~800 MB).

I dislike how easily #Gnome #extensions break between versions. Their API must freeze and backwards compatibility must be maintained, because objectively, there isn't a single user today who is not using extensions. Because simply, the system is unusable without them.

I just didn't see the point of the movie. Yes, feminist blah blah. But which part of that wasn't obvious in every day life and needed to be made into a movie?
How about instead a movie of the ethics of hybridizing someone in the first place? The script only spent about 2 minutes on it, only to move at length into the sexual liberation of the subject. Exploitable and cheap.

I wish I understood why people use the dark themes on their OSes, apps, and websites. I truly don't get it because my eyes can't process information as fast as they can on a white background with black letters. I don't consider the dark themes to be the natural default for human eyes. Maybe for owls...

This is against the federation principles. Could you also upload to Diode or another peertube that doesn't lock-in their videos?
