Amazingly, my area has not had a freeze yet. In previous years, we have had one freeze by Halloween.
☀️ Last year, the US Dept. of Agriculture increased our plant hardiness zone to match climate change. This year, we get extra time with flowers in my garden. Clearly, the government controls the weather.
🌻 Anyway, please enjoy very late season Zinnia, Mexican Sunflower, and Pineapple Sage. We grow the latter flowers especially to help Hummingbirds bulk up for the trip south.

Leaving the roasting sandhills, I hiked into a welcome shady area, the "wet pine flatwoods". There are actually puddles!
🌲 More shrubs here, like Carolina Sheep Laurel. It features in a book I'm writing. Will have to return next Spring to see their flowers.

Around these Bays, there are several distinct natural communities, all seen on one trail. The first one is known as "xeric sandhill scrub", which is just a fancy name for "desert".
☀️ After the rain, the temperature vaulted to 84F/28C with high humidity. Was this November?
🌲 The only trees that can survive in this sand and heat are Longleaf Pine and Turkey Oak. More history and science in alt.
I did not see any Reindeer.

There are lakes and ponds like this all around here, more than anywhere else along the U.S. east coast.
They are called Carolina Bays. The result of complex interactions between unique underground strata in the coastal sandhills and prevailing winds, they hold rainwater and generate multiple natural communities. The trail I took went through all of them.

Once the rain was out of the way, it was beautifully sunny, although the initial humidity was stupifying.
So I started on the trail to walk around an oval lake. But not just any type of lake. Mysteriously, this one has no visible inflow of any kind. No creek, river, or stream.
Even more weird, there is another just like it on the trail. They are at the top of the map. Look how they are even oriented the same direction! But there's more...

Waiting for the rain to stop before heading to the trail. Maybe the light showers overnight caused the family nearby to leave only hours after they arrived and set up camp. A huge tent.
Breakfast is my homemade almond and cranberry granola.
Small birds are getting noisy and flitting about the thick brush.

Traveled east today to tent camp on the NC coastal plain. There are unusual ecological formations to explore and a cultural connection to this month.
I've completed a preliminary analysis and determined that the primary wildlife species here is the mosquito.
The tent is up before dark (so early now). Rain is coming and a Spring Peeper is looking for a girlfriend.
Crickets and the rest of the Night Orchestra are tuning up for tonight's concert.

Duke music professor Anthony Kelley, during the Covid lockdowns, watched a documentary where the Duke Wind Symphony was practicing new music by MARY LOU WILLIAMS. In 1981, she was Duke's first artist in residence.

There were places open in this small area!! We got gas and food.
Another 90 minutes and we were home. 😅
🌊 But the floodwaters have followed us to Charlotte! People are being evacuated now from around the area lake and elsewhere.

Unfortunately, we were low on fuel, and, as power was out everywhere we could see, we ended up having to pull over soon and stay in a restaurant parking lot. Figure out what to do at dawn.
🚨 Emergency vehicles all night.
🌃 No traffic lights, no house lights, no business lights. We were in a new Dark Zone, so enjoyed unusually bright stars.
I checked utility outage maps to find a tiny area with power - and a gas station. At dawn, we headed out. 🤞

Later, a big RV pulled up next to us. The nice folks inside told us there was no going back due to road closings. They gave us water and invited us for dinner. It was very good!
During the meal, two high-water rescues were made for people who tried to cross the floodwaters.
We settled in for the night in our small car. Another rescue occurred. About 1 AM, though, flashing police cars signaled the road was clear. We followed into the dark unknown.

We checked the roads before deciding whether to leave #AshevilleNC on Friday morning as the wind and rain died down. Otherwise, we could be delayed for days.
The two major highways out were clear, unlike secondary roads, so we left quickly.
Upon leaving, GPS re-routed us away from our preferred direction East. Interstate 40 had just flooded.
So, South it was. Just minutes out, we witness the French Broad River overtop I-24. We turned around and parked.

Wind is picking up here as the eyewall approaches. Watching news of catastrophic flooding in Western NC (where I am now).
The French Broad and Swannanoa rivers, picturesque just a couple of days ago, are now causing evacuations.
Also now seeing that power just went out near home in Charlotte area, our travel destination later today.

An Eastern Fence Lizard takes up space on a rock step, blocking progress on my #hike. Probably not on purpose. Still, it's looking back as if to say, "Choose another step." So I did.
Wonderful coloration. They are common and eat almost any insect.
These lizards happen to have a protein in their blood that kills the bacterium that causes Lime disease.

I saw this Red Admiral butterfly on the forest floor while #hiking. These are resilient creatures, as they are uniquely flexible in what they eat.
🦋 This adult travels around this large forest drinking nectar from flowers, and even will feed on tree sap and liquid from overripe fruit. What could it be doing on the ground? Sometimes they snack on poop! 👀 That's flexibility.

An hour after a recent Bell Pepper harvest, we noticed that one of the vegetables had a hitchhiker. A Gray Treefrog had found a hiding place in the top furrow.
I returned it to the plant, sans veggie, to continue its job eating pests - and singing at night.

What better way to celebrate July 4th than by going to the Cherokee Indian July 4th Powwow? Just got to my hotel and am hanging with the lobby cats. It's 20 degrees F cooler than where I left. 🎉
I'm here surrounded by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians, but it's not a "reservation". More later in the thread.

More on #biodiversity and #birds: Even though butterflies and moths can be seen on any flower, their caterpillars specialize on *particular* plants. They need your help to get the #NativePlants that they consume.
🦋 See the site below for plants for your area (N.A. only for now).
🦋 One thing anyone can do is to make sure there are leaves under trees for Winter/Spring development of caterpillars.

When I pulled up the list ☝️for my ecoregion, I was very surprised.
The best things for me to plant/support are:
🦋 Two species of Oaks
🦋 Blueberries, Plums, Cherries
🦋 Certain Sunflowers and Asters
These could drastically improve #biodiversity in my garden and help build back bird populations!
I will be adjusting my plans for Spring planting accordingly. Please join me.

Per the article☝️, the population of American birds has declined by 30% since the 1970s. To help, you must support the bugs that the birds need to reproduce. But only 14% of #NativePlants generate 90% of the yummy caterpillars that drive food webs!

This outstanding article related to #NativePlants has many useful points for preparing for the next growing season and improving the #environment in general. I'll pull out some main ideas in a threaded series this week.
First up: Insects are the primary conduits for energy to get from plants to animals. And lowly caterpillars turn out to be the most important.
Our job, gardeners, is to plant more caterpillar food!

What do owners do for their lonely and bored parrots, which are social animals? Give them tech to video call other parrots, of course.
Parrots were taught how to make video calls to other parrots. During free call time over a period of two months, they "came alive". Some showed each other their toys. Some developed best friends.
