It is still hard to get accountability on the former colonial powers, but people are chipping away at that too. For example, I lost track of it but I think DeSantis dismantled the unit that did that in FL. But sometimes counties also keep stats. We've had several alerts in the past 3 weeks because hospitalizations doubled from June to July.

This should be a normal part of your routine now. It will keep you from feeling like you're going to crack. Keep needed supplies in every bag or briefcase, and go on with your life.

I don't pretend to understand, but you can find some of the same type of responses in hard hit urban areas that have been devoid of resources for generations. So, we all stopped trying to persuade her not to go. She lasted two years and is now happily back in NY. We all breathed a sigh of relief.

@npub189n…satx I'm no expert on FL ...but this is what I observed while I was there: 1) people are just resigned to what comes and take a sort of...we'll get by approach; 2) even in the Black community there seems to be a rejection of anything too confrontational. I met so many "go along to get along" people it was mind boggling. Even my own relatives there have become that way and they are NOT from FL. 3) when I first got there in '93 people still lowered their eyes when whites passed by....

Crime was happening!! But, DC police did not make arrests of white kids. In one case some kids from Georgetown killed one of their team mates. When I say white people are never detained in DC I mean it. In the 3 years I supervised students representing DC detainees, they only saw 2 whites people held overnight. One was a crackhead from VA, who was released Monday morning. The other was a white man who killed somebody. He got bail. My students and I did not believe white people were not committing crime although they were immune from arrest. 1/2

The Detention Compensation Act would provide reparations for those held pretrial without bond. Pretrial detention in DC can last for days, months or even more than a year. A hot demand in the police “reform” side of thing is to demand all law enforcement use body cameras. Body cameras aren’t a magic bullet. The police often don’t activate them, or disable them when the incident begins, and they have been known to try and tamper with the footage. Nonetheless today body cam footage can serve to contradict cop created versions of an incident. But who gets the footage and when? 2/8

They still cannot vote. The still live in tar paper houses. Their children are still not educated properly. #[0] You should say what you want to say. I can also understand why people say things are not better. I think they mean the chains may be physically gone but they still exist. But I agree that is better than having the physical chains and being dismembered. So yes...that's progress.
