I have no clue if System Initiative is a viable idea. It is an audacious vision, which means that it is simultaneously more likely to fail and more likely to succeed. Few would care about a Terraform that is 5% better at managing infrastructure, but a system that is possibly 10x better? Now you have my attention.
It's early in its journey. I haven't tried it myself, and I have no idea whether this vision is achievable. But, I think it is interesting.

I think it's really important for individuals to take ownership and being accountable for things that didn't go as well as expected. At the same time, I think it's important to consider related systemic factors.
For example, if your organization is experiencing a high defect rate or many prolonged outages, then it's worth considering the ways in which the system is designed (explicitly or implicitly) to encourage these failures.
It's the only way to fix actual problems.

Hot take: We talk a lot about using data to make decisions, yet we often overlook the costs of collecting and analyzing data. Humans are subject to many cognitive biases, so metrics can be helpful as a counterbalance.
And yet, many of the companies we admire had leaders that made decisions based on their belief in "the right thing," even if there was no data available to back up those decisions. Expertise, experience, judgment, and intuition are valuable, too. But they can be hard to quantify.

I disagree with the broad thesis of this article. I've no idea what "microclouds" are, but serverless has been a boon for me.
To me, "serverless" means: delegating as much management (patching, upgrading, running) as possible to a service provider, and paying for usage instead of provisioned capacity.

I think that making better decisions requires experience. I also think that learning the right lessons from past experiences (and un-learning any wrong lessons) can be difficult, yet it is necessary and important.
I've found that learning about psychology (e.g. cognitive biases) and mental models can be helpful. Having a good network of colleagues, mentors, and friends can help, too.
This stuff is hard, and I'm not sure if I'm good at it, but I'm trying to get better every day.

I much prefer the term "Composable Data Stack" over "Modern Data Stack."
The former is descriptive of the goals and benefits (the ability to build a pipeline using interoperable components), while the latter is simply a reflection of our industry's novelty bias.

I've now worked somewhat with all three hyperscalers' native monitoring solutions (Google Cloud Monitoring, Azure Monitor, and Amazon CloudWatch) and I've found Google's implementation to be the easiest to use.
I like the native Prometheus integration via the frontend service (query any Cloud Monitoring metric using PromQL.)
CloudWatch seems to define statistics like Average differently (it's a rate sometimes) and Monitor doesn't seem to have aggregations like Sum-by-dimension. Strange.

In many open source projects, a disproportionately small number of contributors either do the work themselves and/or do the glue work to evaluate, review, and merge outside contributions.
It's not a new observation, of course, but we owe so much of our modern world in technology to a relatively small number of people.
