Just had someone send me a 6-page questionnaire PDF through some web interface thing.Not a PDF form, just a PDF, and the reply thing only let me attach certain file formats, with a 3MB file size limit - i.e. likely larger than, say, 6 photos from a phone cam or a scanned print-out would be.
I ended up filling out the form as a 600dpi image in an image editor and converting it to 1-bit then saving as PDF to come in under the file size limit.
How are normal people supposed to use this?

It's very funny to me how IKEA lamps _I bought before_ (years ago) that used to have the "75W max to avoid fires" warning stickers now have "13W max to avoid fires" warning stickers because LED lamps
I mean it's _possible_ they changed the wire cross section significantly but somehow I doubt it

The first pocket (not desk, those are much older!) calculators showed up in the 70s. By the time I finished high school in the early 2000s, ~everyone in my class already had cellphones and dedicated pocket calculators already felt pretty quaint.

@npub1ykd…6j2y The classic is doing this on a scanline level to get "rubber vectors". Sort of the equivalent of rolling shutter artifacts. This one was a thing on Amiga at least. Scanline-based because that way you don't even have to copy anything, you can just twiddle the bitplane fetch pointers every scan line via copper.

D3D11 and Metal are around my personal sweet spot for noodling around. Old-school GL is easier in some ways but also chock-full of random state that makes it overall higher friction for me (although initial velocity is higher). D3D12 is right around my limit for how much API inconvenience I'm willing to put up with for spare-time projects. Vulkan is well past that, so I only write Vulkan code when I get paid to do it.

Apparently a lot of other tenants can't be arsed and just sign off on it without actually checking, and do so a week late?

I'm extra-paranoid because my last move was an UTTER TRASH FIRE due entirely to circumstances outside my control so now I'm extra-incentivized to absolutely maximize the amount of slack for other people to fuck up (since they very well might) without it causing problems for me, but, like, the stuff they wanted me to take care of was "you need to let the utilities know so you'll have power, water and sewage" level stuff, and just, YES, absolutely, that's a priority

@npub1rfc…fll0 Ah OK! Just confirmed on my old Skylake-X workstation box. That's 12 cores, but if I limit to 6 cores I get slightly above 12Mpix/s encode, i.e. 2Mpix/s per core, and it would be slightly more if you also use hyperthreads, so that looks like it tracks with your results.

Oodle Texture BC7 encode at "Low" is ballpark 75Mpix/s on my (admittedly very beefy 16-core 32-thread) home machine, not the ~17? depicted.
I get around 4.5Mpix/s per core on "interesting" content (i.e. not just solid color blocks, that's way faster) with almost perfect linear scaling as you would expect for this embarrassingly parallel task, and a bit more from also using all HW threads per core.
