Related: why do calculator icons everywhere depict a pocket calculator, of all things?
I'm half-joking here, but really, these were kind of a blip.
The first pocket (not desk, those are much older!) calculators showed up in the 70s. By the time I finished high school in the early 2000s, ~everyone in my class already had cellphones and dedicated pocket calculators already felt pretty quaint.
