Always amazes me when people who are in the queer community, or consider themselves an ally run Brave browser.
Brave is run by Brendan Eich, former CEO of Mozilla.
Never forget, he opposed gay marriage, and donated to Prop 8 to limit marriage to heterosexuals in California. He held this belief firmly and after much outrage he resigned and then went on to form Brave.
Surely, the browser is named "Brave" because he believes he was "brave" for standing up for bigotry.

I love when conference slides get released. I just wish they also included speakers notes because most of the time they are only 50% of the story. Guess I have to wait for the videos to be released so I can enjoy them in their full glory.

I hate that the news industry has devolved into 'you must sign in to read this article' or 'you must pay to read this article'. I also hate that 'ads' are the 'only' other way to fund sites.
I wish I could pay without requiring a login/cookie to read, and thus be tracked and allowing some sort of data harvesting / selling.
I think this is where Newspaper did really well. You could throw out the entire ad section and you could share it.

If you never SSH to your server from outside of your country of residence, there is nothing bad about filtering every other countries IP space from accessing your SSH server.
Move it to a non-standard port. Trip-wire other ports such that if they are accessed the source IP gets blocked from further attempts.
Disable password based authentication.
Move ssh to localhost and require wireguard to access..
These are all viable ways to protect yourself. The more hoops to jump through the better.

I am reminded that "localhost" is magical. Most believe it resolves to 127.0.0.1, and it usually does. But it's not impossible to add "localhost" to DNS and have it resolve to a different address.
Additionally. "localhost" doesn't even have to resolve to 127.0.0.1. We get a whole /8! Do you want to run two local webservers and have them both use port 80? You could have them listen on different addresses! 127.0.0.2 and 127.0.0.3! Have fun 😁

Kids. Get your parents a pi-hole for Christmas, but install it long before then. Do it as soon as possible. If you can't do a pi-hole, make sure to get your parents using Firefox paired with ublock. Even better if you do pi-hole + firefox.
Educate your parents on why using the Facebook app is dangerous (it acts like a browser, but lets all the ad shit seep in in). Educate them on scams and how to "trust but verify".
Talk to them about how an ad can say "You've been hacked" and not be true.

Today I learned about this magic variable in MacOS.
export OBJC_DISABLE_INITIALIZE_FORK_SAFETY=YES
If you don't set this, there is a good chance your python code will crash if you do a fork(), some stuff, exec().
objc[53913]: +[__NSCFConstantString initialize] may have been in progress in another thread when fork() was called.
I learned about this with help from a person on slack named 'Fabulous Nuggets', and found more details on this blog from 2018.

Any recommendations on something like a wyse terminal / thin client that can deal with very cold weather? I'd like to put a terminal in my uninsulated work shed. Winters get cold here in Michigan. It's unlikely I'll power up a terminal in subzero temperature, but I need to make sure it will still power up after going through a cold spell.
I don't think many LCD's will survive, CRTs seem more likely.
