It is possible to think about the Fediverse as "a social media platform", and of course many do.
It comes close to approximating that experience.
BUT... it can also be looked at -- and this is much more technically accurate -- as a vast collection of individual "forum" platforms, with the addition of interconnection through federation.
Operated by individuals, informal groups, fandoms, organizations, and companies for all the same reasons they ran websites. Or newsletters.

IDK. How many bars does a town of 1000 people need?
I mean, it's a lot of people on a spaceship, but it's still a fairly small community. And that number was including kids, I think.
There's also an arboretum if you want to go for a walk, and four holodecks.
And some places they can play poker. Are those quarters?
