It is possible to think about the Fediverse as "a social media platform", and of course many do.
It comes close to approximating that experience.
BUT... it can also be looked at -- and this is much more technically accurate -- as a vast collection of individual "forum" platforms, with the addition of interconnection through federation.
Operated by individuals, informal groups, fandoms, organizations, and companies for all the same reasons they ran websites. Or newsletters.
