@npub1lrv…tth9 You’re correct to be reluctant to link to Murdoch’s NY Post. What’s there should be treated with skepticism — including this article, which treats Larry and David Ellison (“the Ellisons”) as if they have the same politics. But this isn’t clear based on public donation records:

@npub1upk…tcwy Agreed, “I don’t know” or similar can be very powerful. It’s funny when the Reply Guys say “oh I know, the answer to X is Y” and “The answer to X is Z” and of course one or both are wrong.
But as a team lead it I find it helpful to say this to prompt discussion. For example, “I don’t understand why we do X here. Can someone explain?” The resulting conversation can reveal hidden assumptions or latent disagreements and eventually lead to a better group understanding of the system.

Our Mandatory Online Workplace Harassment training used to have a “hands-on activity” segment. 🤔 Our Information Protection training still has a segment teaching that source code must be classified at the highest level of confidentiality. 🤔 At least, our anti-phishing training email never had a link with instructions “click this link and enter your username and password to certify completion of this course.”

@npub178r…qekt Yep. As a kid I remember a couple occasions when the family was awakened by a phone call in the middle of the night because an overseas relative had died. More recently as a college student overseas I remember having to fill my pockets with change for the pay phone in order to call home. Nowadays I have regular transoceanic video calls and I am REALLY GOOD at doing time zone calculations in my head.

@npub1lrv…tth9 Thanks for running the experiment and writing up the results. Open sourcing the technology is also a good move, for the reasons you cite.
I can’t help but notice that the source was published on GitHub, where just about everybody (including me and projects I work on) publishes all their open source. Will GitHub (Microsoft) curtail or “monetize” its services and APIs in the same way as other platforms? No signs of this … yet … but it’s a concern in the back of my mind.

@npub178r…qekt Right, “silent ignore / no warning” is a terrible misfeature. A thing I’ve seen recently is people posting their PM acceptance setting in their profile, so that someone attempting to send a PM has a possibility of seeing that it won’t be read. Potentially a small workaround until this can get fixed.

@npub1a4c…t2kf Really interesting, thanks for posting it. One thing that strikes me that Hoare mentioned a couple times but didn't really analyze, is that several issues were decided in a hurry. (And it was ever thus.) I don't know the history of Rust, but I wonder why certain things were rushed. Would the language have turned out more to his liking if those decisions had been postponed?

It would be helpful for you to provide examples of the stakes and how you’d expect journalists to report on them. For instance take Trump’s statement on pardoning Jan 6th criminals. The stakes would be putting the rule of law at risk. Would that be a good example?

@npub1a4c…t2kf One of our payments to the IRS (paper check sent US Mail) hasn't been processed after six months. This isn't unusual; apparently the IRS is still opening mail from 2020! The easy explanation is "Government Inefficiency!" but this is much worse than before.
Like you, I still see occasional shortages of things on shop shelves. Again the easy explanation is "Capitalism Brittle!" but these phenomena tell me something more subtle is going on. Not sure what though.
