Ironically, that may be a modern tendency to compromise less. We have all become so used to getting exactly what we want that we have lost the ability to accept ‘better’ or ‘good enough’.

Don’t forget this is also tied in with what we need for climate action. The poorly-insulated detached sprawl that fills many new estates is about as bad for the environment as could be. We need to make cities denser, with many more well-insulated blocks of apartments, and with a wide range of amenities within walking distance. Eddington on the outskirts of Cambridge is a good example of what is possible.

It’s weird how poor managers judge performance in hours rather than output. What does it matter if employees have four ‘full time” jobs, as long as they are performing each one adequately?
When I ran a development team, I never worried about who spent what time in the office, as long as we got the products out on time. My philosophy was “if you’re not feeling productive, I’d rather you stayed home and drank your own coffee, rather than coming into the office and drinking mine.”

I came here to say exactly this. But it’s a balance. We shouldn’t stop researching long-term solutions just because politicians misuse the data. We have to make it clear that CDR is only relevant after we stop making the problem worse.

Truly the end of an era. My company used both a Z80 and a 6502 in the same design when they were the leading edge of microprocessor technology…
