Whoever invented computer fonts that can't easily distinguish between I and 1, l and I, 0 and O, did a great deal for swearing at computers and will have to practice speaking an amalgamation of Icelandic letter accents, obscure Chinese tone intonation and Khoisan in hell, and get a spike up the bottom from some satanic minions every time they get it slightly wrong.

It's worth knowing about for how something can be right but ruined by bad business decisions.

* The UK, in a general election, is divided into districts called constituencies. Each constituency is represented by a single member of parliament - an MP. When the election is finished whichever political party has the most MPs forms a government. In the UK the Prime Minister is from whichever political party gains a large enough majority in parliament. Support for a prospective MP who doesn’t get elected does not count towards the national result. A vote for a prospective MP with little chance of been elected in a constituency could be regarded as a protest vote or a way of registering support for a political party and its policies, but it will not count towards the total of MPs in parliament.
It is possible that an MP does not have the majority of votes within a constituency but is elected. For instance, if there were five potential MPs, I’ll refer to them as ABCDE, and ‘A’ got 24% and won, it means the remaining 76% of votes were distributed between BCDE with none getting more than 24%. In other words ‘A’ didn’t get 76% of votes but was elected because they were the MP that got the most. The benefit of such a system is that it tends to favour the big, established, political parties and exclude the less popular ones - meaning that complicated governments, formed from political parties with different policies, are unlikely to be formed. There have been counter examples during wartime or more recently with a coalition between the Conservative party and the Liberal Democrat party when the Conservative party failed to get enough votes to form a government. The downside is obvious - minority voices or popular political parties are excluded, although, obviously junior members of a coalition don't matter as much unless they have the deciding votes.
UK voting can be tactical for maximum effect. Sometimes person can vote for the party they want, with no realistic chance of that party gaining power, which does register inasmuch as the percentages of votes that party got nationally does indicate people support the policies of that party, it’d be wrong to suggest that the vote is entirely wasted, or a vote for a party that is more likely to be elected that most closely aligns with their personal politics. I’m loath to tell people which way to vote because politics is the art of people with half a clue or more, often well meaning, selling simply presented policies to people whom, often, not always, have less than half a clue and a great deal of strongly held opinions. The good ones try to explain rather than appealing to common sense or platitudes - magicians and confidence tricksters love common sense.

Framed #817 (non. I watched episode 4 of ¿Quién lo mató? which is the last episode until Friday. It's not the kind of show that a person can binge watch because the trope of the same story played out from different perspectives would become too easy to mix up after a few episodes. I watched the 'Election TV Debate' with Kier Starmer and (our current Prime Minister) Rishi Sunak. I'd have to call it for Starmer but not because Sunak was bad at debating, but because most of the things they were talking about in negative terms reference things that happened during the time Sunak's party was in power. That's a massive disadvantage, even if Sunak wasn't in charge at the time. So that only really left FUD attacks on Starmer. "Yeah, but you'd be worse" doesn't work on someone like Starmer because he looks consumately professional and like he's haunted by a chimney sweep killed by a Brougham driven by a guffawing man in a peasoup fog. Labour can be 'new & improved' and the Conservatives can't be 'new & improved' even if they were. In reality they're both going to have to be clever working within the same constraints, which does have leeway up to a point. I can't see global financial markets saying lolwut to either Starmer or Sunak.)

Framed #815 (nope. I watched the first half of ¿Quién lo mató? on Amazon Prime and the first third of Eric on Netflix. The film simulation on Eric is nearly perfect, however like most digital 35mm film simulation (I know movie film is different), it suffers from the focal plane being too broad (there are caveats with regards to smaller than 'full frame' sensors). With any camera, where the camera is focussed and the narrowness of the lens aperture (denoted using f/stops - the higher the number the smaller the hole and the greater the depth of field) defines to what distance things will be in focus*. With a 35mm sized recording medium the focal plain only really begins to get usefully larger way upwards from ~f/3.5†. It's in part why compact film cameras and a naïve use of film SLRs tends to produce a very distinctive 'filmy' look - the lighting is not professionally controlled and auto-exposure gets it wrong- a 35mm SLR with a good lens, in good light, with modern colour film, at f/8 or above, really doesn't look that much different than a full frame digital camera with similarly good lens**. With modern digital cinema cameras they can operate effectively in much lower light (at a higher ISO) which means the cameras can operate at a higher f/stop (smaller aperture) which means far more is in focus and the focal plain is wider than it would be with film in similar light. The only way Eric's film simulation could have been improved was lowering the f/stop more often to produce a silkier film like look (possibly having to negatively exposure compensate for good lighting - kind of perverse really). Ditto for a full-frame digital SLR (or rangefinder) the colours and film grain can be emulated but to make it look more film like a person would have to shoot and focus more like film with fixed ISO and closer attention to lighting. Or just not bother emulating anything other than the excellent colours of film - the best bit.***)

* Processed is a very difficult word to define in the context of food because even sourdough bread from stone ground wholemeal flour is a process. By processed in this context I tend to mean bread with added emulsifiers and fats to make it lighter and fluffier. At a minimum it is less nutritionally dense than less processed bread because it has more ingredients that do not directly contribute to nutrition. The amount of bubbles is debatable because it's quite feasible to make 3 or 4 ingredient bread with big bubbles, although more difficult to make it uniformly light without emulsifiers or consistent without controlling flour components parts.

I watched the last of To The Lake on Netflix, which was very good, quite grim, and implied Russia has an alcohol problem, which I think is a demonstrator that it's not in any way propaganda. Series 2 is finished/released but not on Netflix. Maybe it's some sanctions thing because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.I had a leaky 20 year old dishwashing machine and was entirely sober. I fitted the part correctly, but either I'm incorrect and I didn't fit the part correctly or the problem isn't the part that was implied by the symptoms. I may try silicone grease; I don't think that's an ideal solution but may help me narrow down the leak. I have a big tube of quality silicone grease for fountain pens. At the rate I use it for fountain pens I have a century's worth.)

Framed #811 (nope. I watched the latest Inside No. 9 on BBC 2 which was good. I repaired a dishwasher which involved taking it apart and putting it back together which was quite a workout/painful, and luckily a nephew was printing off mock exam papers/revising and was on hand to help. I am hoping it won't leak but I'm not entirely confident. It was a £7 part, a bit of a puzzle, and sweaty elbow grease, or a new dishwasher. I previously successfully replaced stuff like inlet solenoids/pipes, I suspect at some point there will be cascading failure, not because of the, competent, replacements but because it's that old* and out of warranty/uninsurable a decade ago.)

A pixel delta (difference) between a Rec. 601 colour profile and a wide sRGB colour profile, which I mapped lighter so it's visible. Framed #810 (nope. I watched Late Night with the Devil, which was good and influenced by the BBC's also excellent Ghostwatch from 1992 as well as a lot of other things. When I say influenced by, generally speaking, I don't mean 'ripped off' which covers stuff like LLMs and plagiarism, I mean influence contributing to something substantially different or better that doesn't diminishe or reduce the currency of its influences. Not to get too nerdy, but there were some nice technical details that were difficult to do, the colour space, or gamut, was clearly based on broadcast NTSC because the black bits weren't quite black and the general tendancy towards a particular saturated colour range suited to TV broadcasts in the 1970s. They implied that it was filmed using film, which would have been unlikely for live broadcast TV, and would have been something like the RCA TK44B which used three (or in some cases four) cathode ray tube senors (Plumbicon in the 1970s). The actual output from many of the cameras exceeded the NTSC/YIQ broadcast standards, so the bump in quality, watching it in 1080p HD can be technically explained beyond 'a wizard did it', because presumably we'd be watching the, maybe, decent archive recordings, converted to digital with something like the Rec. 601 colour space and no interlacing to worry about. I particularly like the look of the later three and four tube cathode ray cameras (although much of the conversion to broadcast signal doesn't really show them off)*. I felt the black and white bits could have been a little more authentic but maybe not because the technical deficiencies of 8mm cameras in mixed light would have made it distractingly arty. Technical authenticity is not necessary, most people won't notice, and a good story matters more. The sound design was great. I'll maybe do Wordall later because I distracted myself with thinking about cameras and colour. Perception is going down another rabbit black hole.)

* I'd go as far as saying that on a high end CRT or high quality digital conversion it's more realistic, but lower resolution, than most non-cinema film. Although the ghosting and trails of earlier, worse, cathode ray cameras have their charm. People get hung up on the romance of film.

I watched I Think We're Alone Now, 2018, one Prime Video and I think it is an underrated film and were it exactly the same film but French reviewers would be talking about how clever it is. I'm not saying French films get an easier ride from reviewers because they don't, but sometime because expectations are framed within the dominant culture of the reviewers sometimes a film or media needs to be foreign for an objective review. I had a glass of Valpolicella Ripasso* last night which is an interesting wine because, in essence, the grapes aren't that great, it's northeastern Italy, nearly parallel with Venice, nearly abutting Austria, and in order to produce good wine from the dominant grape varieties they dry the grapes in order to concentrate the flavours and double ferment to produce a standard ~14% wine. It's very good. It's a little strange, but strange good, because it's a light coloured and textured wine that tastes full bodied and complex enough not to be boring. I've found with Vivino anything over 3 is good, 3.5 very good, and anything over 4 excellent. The big caveat is that personal preference plays a part. I tried a 4-something, 4.6 IIRC, Rioja earlier in the year and it very much wasn't for me because it had the literal aroma of Christmas cake, and I like Christmas cake but I'm not that keen on very perfumed wines (amazing natural chemistry aside) and objectively speaking lots of people disagree. There are no right answers of taste unless playing to a crowd because individuals like what they like.)

Framed #804 (nope. I'm happy people are making a living from it. I watched the last in the current series of MasterChef and The Gullspång Miracle: A Nordic Mystery. The Gullspång Miracle was good and not at all supernatural despite what the title suggests. I ate lamb neck and vegetables. I bought, nearly a week ago, a French bottle of wine using the Pinot Noir grape, because it was cheap. I only drink about 100ml a day, at dinner. I use VacuVin to keep it fresh (I think argon wine pumps are better but not on a budget). I don't wholly regret getting the cheap bottle of Pinot Noir, it's not unpleasant, but it's not a thing to sip and savour. It's like a nicer Lambrusco from the 1990s. The Pinot Noir cost under £6* and has a rating of around 3.2 on Vivino so not awful at that price. The lamb neck was medium rare but I haven't rushed to the toilet in any capacity. The lamb neck was cheaper than sausages at the butchers or a ready meal. Although I'd strongly recommend knowing what you're doing. The inflammation has receded and I slept well.)

"Scientists say" and "researchers say" do an awful lot of work during any science related TV news reports. It'd be nice if it was "scientists/researchers from ... say" or "a recent report/paper from ... says" or some variation of that. It's almost a telltail caveats are not likely to be expressed until people assumed to be "the scientists/researchers" or those assumed to be qualified in those areas comment. I'm fairly sure some scientists/researchers say other things like "I must remember to get bread on the way home" or "this reporter is a knobend". Luckily, with the aid of Google News a person can "type in" the general premise of the TV news segment and find out who said what, why, and when, because the TV news segment didn't say.

I don't have long COVID but I do have something that is often painful, disruptive, currently mostly invisible**, and a general annoyance***, so knowing a tiny bit about immune systems I fully accept that Long COVID (and other post viral symptoms) are real. I'm fine about it because I think a kind of fatalistic acceptance of it enabled me to have some quality of life and make the best of a bad situation. I am genuinely OK about it. It's just the way it is. I'm in pain now. I'm looking forward to breakfast. If someone were to suggest that by taking a more positive attitude the pain would disappear I think about the only way I could be more positive about breakfast is if they shoved it, painfully, up their bumhole. I'm having a large bowl of granola without milk. I watched the last of Outer Range series 2 and I look forward to series 3. TL;DR a positive attitude is good and helps the way that we perceive, experience and deal with reality, but doesn't change reality by itself.)
