On this day in 1884, electric lights were turned on at Canada's Parliament Buildings for the first time. A small powerplant was installed in the basement of the building.
The sockets and light bulbs were made by the Canada Clock Company & installed by Henry Byllesby.

On this day in 1974, Pauline Mills McGibbon became the first female Lt. Governor in Canadian history, and second in the British Commonwealth.
She remained in office until 1980.
During her time as Lt. Gov., she gave back all of her $35,000 yearly salary except for $200 a month.

On this day in 2015, Don Harron died.
Born in Toronto in 1924, he started his acting career with CBC Radio.
He most famous role was on Hee Haw, where he played Charlie Farquharson.
He also hosted CBC Radio's Morningside from 1977-1982.
His daughter is director Mary Harron.

On this day in 1850, Elizabeth Simcoe died.
Born in 1762, she was the wife of Upper Canada Lt. Governor John Graves Simcoe.
Her diary of her life in Canada gives a valuable impression of life in colonial Ontario from the late-18th century.

Rising to fame on In Living Color, he broke out as a major movie star in the 1990s.
He has won two Golden Globes, and been nominated for a Grammy and BAFTA.

On this day in 1929, Jacques Plante was born in Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel, Quebec.
In his hockey career from 1947 to 1975, he won the Hart, seven Vezinas and six Stanley Cups.
He also popularized the use of a mask among goalies.
He died in 1986.

On this day in 1998, M/V Flare sank off the coast of Newfoundland at Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.
The bulk carrier broke in two during a storm, killing 21 crew. The stern sank immediately, the bow drifted for days & sank near Cape Breton.
Only four crew members survived.

On this day in 1907, Alexander Knox was born in Strathroy, Ontario.
In his acting career, he appeared in over 100 film, television & theatre productions. He earned an Oscar nomination and won a Golden Globe.
He also wrote adventure & detective novels.
He died in 1995.

On this day in 1946, Frances Gertrude McGill, the Sherlock Holmes of Saskatchewan, was made an honorary colonel with the RCMP.
This gives her the distinction of being the first female RCMP officer.

Born in Sarnia, Ontario in 1931, he had a steady television acting career. His most famous role was as Reuben Kincaid, the manager of The Partridge Family in the show from 1970 to 1974.

As a snooker player, he was considered the best player outside the United Kingdom. In 1980, he won the World Snooker Championship.
He was the first non-British player to top the snooker world ranking

In 1980, she became the leader of the Nova Scotia NDP. She led the party until 1994.
From 1997 to 2008, she was a Member of Parliament, and led the federal NDP from 1995 to 2003, through two elections.

On this day in 1882, Henry Burr was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick.
As a singer, he produced over 12,000 recordings (by his own estimate). His recordings have sold an estimated 240 million records.
He also began working in radio in the 1920s.
He died in 1941.

On this day in 1879, Mazo de la Roche was born in Newmarket, Ontario.
She published her first story in 1902. In 1922, she published her first book.
Her third novel, Jalna, started a series that brought her fame & fortune. The series has sold 11 million copies.
She died in 1961.

On this day in 1949, a Canadair North Star aircraft made the first non-stop flight across Canada.
It left Halifax and landed in Vancouver eight hours and 32 minutes later.
On board was a 14-man crew. The plane travelled at an average speed of 529 km/h.

On this day in 1914, Harold Russell was born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
During the Second World War he lost both his hands in an explosion.
In 1946, he was cast as Homer Parrish in The Best Years of Our Lives, for which he won an Oscar. He won a second inspirational Oscar, making him the only actor to win two Oscars for the same role.
He died in 2002.

On this day in 1947, William "Big Bill" Werbeniuk was born in Winnipeg.
In his snooker & pool career, he was one of the best players in the world.
He became famous for drinking during games, including allegedly once drinking 76 cans of lager in one game.
He died in 2003.

On this day in 1997, Brigadier Dollard Ménard died. Born in Quebec in 1913, he was wounded five times during the Dieppe Raid.
He was the only commanding officer who landed at Dieppe to return after the raid.
He earned the DSO & Legion of Honour for his service.

On this day in 1976, Eaton's announced it was ending the Eaton's Catalogue due to declining sales for the company.
The Eaton's Catalogue was a defining part of Canadian culture and life since it was established in 1884.

On this day in 1942, the Canadian government ordered all male Japanese-Canadians between the ages of 18 & 45 to be removed from the coast of B.C.
Japanese-Canadian fishing was banned, as was their use of shortwave radios.

On this day in 1961, Gertrude Guerin was elected chief of the Musqueam Indian Band in British Columbia.
In her life she established the Native Education College, founded the Vancouver Police and Native Liaison Society & helped launch the landmark R v Guerin case.

On this day in 2002, Frank Shuster died.
Born in Toronto in 1916, he was one half of the legendary Wayne and Shuster. Together they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show dozens of times.
His cousin, Joe, also co-created Superman & his daughter Rosie wrote for SNL.

In her figure skating career she has won an Olympic bronze, a World Championship silver and the Canadian National Championship six times.

So far in his NHL career he has won five Art Ross, three Harts, four Ted Lindsay and one Rocket Richard.

They contracted smallpox and died within months.

In his hockey career from 1905 to 1918, he won two Stanley Cups & had 66 goals in 150 games.

On this day in 1930, Tim Horton was born in Cochrane, Ontario.
In his NHL career from 1949 to 1974, he won four Stanley Cups. In 1977, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

As a director, he directed Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould & The Red Violin.
The Red Violin won an Oscar and eight Genie Awards.

On this day in 1922, Frederick Banting and Charles Best conducted the first-ever injection of insulin into a human.
The recipient was 14-year-old Canadian Leonard Thompson at Toronto General Hospital.
Thompson lived for 13 more years and the world was changed.

On this day in 1914, HMCS Karluk was crushed in the pack ice of the Arctic Ocean. Of the 25 aboard, 11 died in their attempt to reach land over the ice.
It was part of the Canadian Arctic Expedition under Vilhjalmur Stefansson.

An alpine ski racer, she won Olympic gold in 1960, and two World Championship gold that same year.
She won the Lou Marsh Trophy in 1960 & is a member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

On this day in 1836, John Molson died.
The founder of Molson Brewery, he also financed the construction of Canada's first steamship and the first public railway in Canada.
He established the Montreal General Hospital & was president of the Bank of Montreal.

On this day in 2016, George Jonas died. Born in Hungary in 1935, he moved to Toronto in 1962.
In his career, he wrote 16 books, one play and two operas.
His most famous book is Vengeance, which was turned into the movie Munich in 2005.

On this day in 1860, Sir Charles G.D. Roberts was born in New Brunswick.
He was one of the first Canadian authors to gain international recognition.
He wrote 43 fiction books, four non-fiction books and a lot of poetry.
He died in Toronto in 1943.

On this day in 1960, Lisa Walters was born in Prince Rupert, BC.
She won three straight B.C. Ladies Championships, and three LPGA titles between 1992 and 1998.
She is a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame.

On this day in 1927, the Laurier Palace Theatre Fire in Montreal killed 78 children.
After the fire, the Quebec government banned anyone under the age of 16 from attending the cinema for the next four decades.

On this day in 1967, the Confederation Train left Victoria on its journey across Canada. It reached the Maritimes on Oct. 26, & finished in Montreal on Dec. 5.
Canadians toured the cars to learn about Canada's history through various displays.
The train whistle played O Canada.

On this day in 1918, the first rule change in NHL history was implemented.
It allowed goaltenders to leave their feet to make a save.
When asked his opinion, NHL President Frank Calder said:

Born in Vancouver in 1922, she acted in several dozen films from 1942 to 1993.
From 1964 to 1966, she played Lily, the vampire wife on The Munsters.
She has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

During the Second World War, he worked as a Cree code talker. He kept his oath of secrecy nearly to his death in 2003.

On this day in 1827, Sir Sandford Fleming was born in Scotland.
He came to Canada when he was 18.
He designed Canada's first postage stamp, surveyed many of our railway routes and promoted the use of time zones, a prime meridian and a 24-hour clock.
He died in Halifax in 1915.

On this day in 1903, Hooley Smith was born in Toronto.
In 1924, he won the Allan Cup and Olympic Gold in hockey.
From 1924 to 1941, he played in the NHL, winning two Stanley Cups.
His first season he wore a helmet, one of the first players ever to do so.
He died in 1963.

On this day in 1916, Babe Pratt was born in Stony Mountain, Manitoba.
In his NHL career from 1935 to 1952, he won two Stanley Cups and the Hart Trophy.
He was banned for betting on games but after he promised not to do it again he was reinstated.
He died in 1988.

The show was an immediate hit and ran for seven seasons until 1996.

On this day in 1930, Clint Benedict's nose was broken & he was knocked out by a shot in practice from Howie Morenz.
Six weeks later, he returned wearing a mask. He wore it for five games before ditching it.
Three decades later, Jacques Plante popularized the mask among goalies.

On this day in 1931, Dickie Moore was born in Montreal.
In his NHL career from 1951 to 1968, he won two Art Ross and six Stanley Cups. His 96 points in a season in 1959 was a record until broken by Bobby Hull in 1966.
Moore died in 2015.

On this day in 2005, Lois Hole died.
Born in 1929 in Buchanan, SK, she wrote her first gardening book in 1993. In all she wrote 16 books, which have sold one million copies.
From 2000 to 2005, she was the Lt. Governor of Alberta.
Lois Hole Provincial Park is named for her.

On this day in 1908, George Dixon died.
Born in 1870 in Africville, Nova Scotia, he was the first Black athlete to win a world championship. He was also the first Canadian-born boxing champion.
Ring Magazine ranked him the greatest featherweight boxer of all-time.

On this day in 1891, Tim Buck was born.
He led the Communist Party of Canada from 1929-1962.
He was imprisoned by the government from 1932-1934, and had eight bullets fired into his cell to "frighten him".
His testimony led to prison reforms in Canada.
He died in 1973.

Born in Quebec in 1899, he was a pioneering sound designer who played a key role in sound technology in film.
He won seven Oscars and was the brother of Oscar-winning actress Norma Shearer.
He has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.

Born in Neepawa, MB in 1926, she was a major Canadian literary figure.
She wrote 5 novels in her life, the most famous of which was The Stone Angel.

As one of the Matchless Six, she was one of six Canadian women to win gold in the 1928 Summer Olympics.
She wrote for the Montreal Star for 40 years, & was on every Canadian Olympic Committee from 1932-1972.

Born in 1918 in Kitchener, he played for the Boston Bruins from 1936 to 1942 & 1945 to 1955.
He won two Stanley Cups as a player (two more as a GM) and won the Hart.

He competed for Canada in the hammer throw at the 1912 Summer Olympics. He won silver at the event.
He was the first person to serve as Canada's flag bearer during the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

On this day in 1885, Gordon Flowerdew was born.
On March 31, 1918, he led his men against five German infantry companies, suffering heavy casualties. The charge unnerved the Germans, preventing them from crossing L'Avre River.
He died that day but earned the Victoria Cross.

On this day in 1884, the Humber Railway disaster occurred.
A GTR commuter train hit a freight train, killing 32 men and boys. Many burned to death when a toppled fireplace caused the passenger car to burn.
It is the worst train disaster in Toronto's history.

This Act created the legal status of Canadian citizenship.

On this day in 1991, the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) came into effect.
The tax was very unpopular among Canadians.
Originally set at 7%, it was lowered to 5% in 2008. Today, GST generates $37.4 billion in revenue for the federal government.
