On this day in 1914, Harold Russell was born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
During the Second World War he lost both his hands in an explosion.
In 1946, he was cast as Homer Parrish in The Best Years of Our Lives, for which he won an Oscar. He won a second inspirational Oscar, making him the only actor to win two Oscars for the same role.
He died in 2002.
