How do you articulate: why open source?
I speak with decision makers (either investors or enterprise) and there is always a suspicious push back for open source:
-difficult to monetize,
-must be careful not to share “the secret sauce” of the business,
-security flaws went undetected for years (android for instance)
Of course I can reply:
- even Tesla open sourced some patents to allow the creation of the market
- security flaws are everywhere, crowdstrike and windows, at least you have more eyes in open source
But I want to hear how do you articulate it? How do you position open source as superior to closed source?

That’s not very realistic, it’s like saying openAI is afraid of a new tensorflow version. That open source part is open source for very good reasons (better security, testing, having brains from universities viewing and reviewing) and all the value delivered to customers come from how the company uses that part.
For Bitcoin it’s the same, better security, cryptography, etc.. come from open source, if a company wants to build their own Bitcoin you end up with a crap like BCH or BSV which the market does not like.
It makes zero business sense, that can’t be the reason

Social sciences are not my field and I read through quickly so apologies if I’ve missed it: when you speak about historical costs of doing business (gifts to elders etc..) I was immediately curious about how does it relate with mining costs (and exchange rate of bitcoin for actors who can’t mine)

This episode was super interesting: we delved into what are euro-dollars, petro-dollars and then the infamous NAKA-dollars.
Basically dollars outside US banks are not “protected by the FED”, they are outside M2 and they accounted for up to 90% of all international loans. They were born when Soviets wanted to move their dollars from US banks to European ones fearing sanctions in the early 50s (history doesn’t repeat but for sure rhymes..).
Then in the 70s payments for oil were structured as follows: an oil importer asked a non-US bank for a loan in dollars, at the same time the oil exporter received it as dollar deposit as payment for the oil. The balance of the banks is 0, they can create as much as they want of this! There is what’s called a maturity mismatch: the loans last years while the deposit could be moved to another bank at any time. This problem brought to life all form of financial tools to make sure the flow of oil continues unhindered.
Naka-dollar, as defined by Bitmex Ayes, are just a derivative product which always contains 1USD of bitcoin. This has some super interesting trades behind, but we analyzed how could that be used in the future, when Bitcoin will be too precious to exchange on a daily basis.
The #podcast is in Italian 🇮🇹 as there are no macroeconomics podcast for Bitcoiners here (that I know of), there are indeed famous bitcoin podcasts, but they focus either on the tech or on adoption. Very rarely the business or financial side of things is discussed, so that’s the niche we chose with Bitcoin Cabana.

I am a noob in such matters of course, but here are a couple of historical pointers:
- CS operation reminds of Bear Stern rescue, which started a rally of risk assets for a couple of months before collapse
- liquidity swaps between central banks were also a temporary measure invented during GFC, which became permanent. It’s not clear to me what’s exactly the consequence of what, but high volume of swaps was correlated with major market crisis (gfc and March 2020 had spikes in that activity)
I think gfc was structurally very different: today there is high inflation and low unemployment, during gfc inflation was 5%ish and unemployment skyrocketed to 10%, today we have 10% inflation and unemployment still close to 3 or 4 % (basically a minimum). Today there is A LOT more money in the system (10 years of QE and a covid packagr later..)
So I’m not sure the feeling can even be the same. At the time I was a grad student and had no idea about the world, so take whatever I say with caution! To me it was just curious house prices

About SVB chapter 11, do you know if that means stock from its startup clients have to marked to market?
If I remember right they gave some credit lines to clients with startup stock as collateral. This was not the reason why they blew out, but if those stocks touch any form of rational market, that will blow out a couple of VC funds for sure

There’s the long answer: you build a model of the price of bitcoin and then decide some rule of how much to buy the further below real price is respect to your model.
The short answer is: it doesn’t really matter, model will be wrong sooner or later anyway. Your cash availability is the most important part of the equation, “don’t go broke” is probably a good idea, hyperbitcoinization is still quite far away!
From a math perspective you are looking at the secretary problem: when to stop waiting for new prices and take the price? But again, this goes back to modeling the price

I didn’t setup my nip05 yet, but if I got it right: verification means on the domain of your nip there must be a file “domain.com/.well-known/nostr.json”
If the file is not present or not configured correctly - it must have inside { “names”:{“bitdecoina”:”npub…”}} then I guess you see verification pending
If you use a service for hosting the json, then you have to ping the service provider as probably something is broken on their side.

Bot #spam on nostr, a discussion!
Shared block lists cannot work: easy to abuse the lists and easy to create new bots.
We already know the best answer against spam: PoW!
A - mining per note, the client must crunch some hashes before submitting the note, the relay would become something like a pool. The problem here is that bots may have financial incentives to spam, so it may be profitable to setup a weird mining rig at scale, still, you’d read only highly motivated bots 😂
B - pay per mention, you read all notes and mentions from users you follow but if someone you don’t follow tries to mention you, he needs to zap you for you to read it. This creates a strange incentive: follow no-one so everyone must pay to write to you, but I guess this would work only for “famous” or “busy” people?
C - pay per note, you literally pay the relay to push your notes before others or multiple times wrt to other notes. Bandwidth is limited, large relays may charge to make sure your notes are going through asap and at least n times? Relay as mempool and notes as txs?
I like B the most. For the moment bots are not gnarly but nostr is still small and advertisers are not looking into it, give it time..
What would you choose? Other ideas?
