Once, very late at night after much determined carousing, I believed I had "the answer". I had the true solution to all the problems of the human condition. So I wrote it down. When I found the note a few days later, I had simply transcribed the lyrics of Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz, which had been playing in the background.

The style of the alt text you've added for that image really really puts me in mind of text-based adventures on home computers back in the 80s, and now I'm thinking that a retro game based on your work would be amazing! Well that did not go swimmingly. A funny thing I'd forgotten about redundancy and that I've read in any number of posts from people in this position - actually telling you that you personally are being laid off always seems to be an afterthought.
When only those being laid off attend the meeting, it seems deliberately obtuse that we then have to be given a letter in order to read our fate, and that this fate is not ever spoken aloud.

On the bus to a meeting to see if I'm being made redundant.
I want to say "mixed feelings" but that really doesn't cover it.
The digital employment landscape doesn't seem like the world of opportunity it did back in 2004 (previous redundancy), especially not for a mostly despairing 50-sthg with zero confidence.
My only positive is that this time I've more savings than debt.

One of my greatest/worst cringe moments is when I remember bumping into Pete Postlethwaite in a bar in Belfast while in the middle of a conversation with a friend about Postlethwaite's acting. I disagreed with Mr P when he said it was a serendipity, and rebutted: "No, it's more of a real cool coincidence".
It was several years before I learned the definition of 'serendipity'.
I remembered all this while running this morning and recoiled so hard I stepped off the pavement into traffic.

There's plans for this in the UK too; they've been trying to sell it by calling them Freeports, hiding the extent to which the ports will just be a small part of these much larger self-governed corporate entities. I had an article saved from a couple of years back but I can't find it anywhere, I'm sorry.
