My friend group is chewing on a discussion about DMs who charge for their services which we all agreed was a cool side-gig & a perfectly valid thing to do - both to charge if you're good and to pay if your group needs a #DM.
The contention came when a friend discovered one who was charging $45 CAD ($33 USD) per person per session.
It was unclear if this friend was shocked anyone would pay that or that anyone would charge that. The avg was ~$25.

My biggest criticism of Mistborn is that the world is entirely men besides the main character. And she hates anything even slightly feminine (for good story reason). In fact a group of our semi-protagonist young men discuss women as being a diversion not to get too invested in. The whole atmosphere doesn't feel great as a female reader.
Nice to read though, that a movie might be in the works & there's interest in diversifying (Sanderson has acknowledged the problem).

Finished Brandon Sanderson's book Mistborn.
Wasn't the story I thought it was going to be, but an exciting & satisfying read nonetheless. I haven't read enough novels in the last decade. It's nice to be into a series again. Ordered the next 2 on the spot.

OMG. Who has a single tear to shed for these banks? Did they totally ignore the facts that
A) #Twitter wasn't really profitable before Musk bought it.
B) Musk's stated goals before buying it were changes that everyone who loved it knew would hurt it & its users.
??? This was the most obviously terrible deal for those banks & they totally ignored the warning signs & let Musk fool them.

I once went on a field trip in elementary school where we dug up fossils in an ancient seabed. It was the singular moment of my elementary school life. I wanted to be Alan in Jurassic Park.
I still have that fossil collection.
When I realized that digging up ancient bones & civilizations in the sand wasn't realistic, I went full 180° into tech. Back in the 90s computers were The Future.
I have no regrets but wow games like Tomb Raider are a treat.
Where are the fossil digging games though? 🤔

I really can't get enough of treasure-hunting movies, games & stories. Indiana Jones, National Treasure, etc.

In hindsight, a heat wave wasn't the best time to tackle extensive yardwork but, we are running out of free days for the summer. 🥵
Behind our yard is a farm field. It's tilled right along the edge of everyone's fence leaving a 1.5m strip that gets overrun by aggressive weeds waist high. Which find their way into our yard.
Too many years of neglect & it got crazy. Took weed whacking then carefully mowing a couple inches at a time to tame it.

After Covid we saw a wave of mistrust against #science & #medicine. When the hollowed out tech industry faces a painful correction people will be left hanging when services & products they rely on either vanish, become too malicious, or get prohibitively expensive. Rapid price increases & ads in #streaming services are already leaving a lot of people priced out & feeling betrayed.
Even a technologist like myself feels the #tech in my life is less helpful & more harmful than 5 years ago.

Step 4:
Honey drains out of the steel barrel, through 2 layers of filters to remove wax, bee parts & other bits. It pours into a plastic bucket with a spigot in the bottom.

Step 3:
Load 3 frames into this big steel centrifuge. It's anchored to the floor. A hand crank is turned to quickly spin the frames inside & pull the honey out. It drains down the sides to the bottom of the steel barrel.

Step 2:
Carefully pick the wax caps off the frames. The wax is collected in a sieve to drain some of the honey clinging to it. My cousin uses the wax to make various homemade products.

My parents have 2 bee hives. Did a big #honey extraction day with the family today. Both hives were weighing in at over 200 lbs each!
It's such an interesting process.
Step 1: The frames are carefully removed from the hives, leaving enough for the #bees through the winter.

LOL! I had the NYT Wordle puzzle open which I gave up doing almost a year ago after a particularly painful streak loss. 😓 And an SCP web story I had always planned to read but never got to. That one got bookmarked for Capital-L Later.
Plus a couple shopping sites for kids' stuff that is more in the "maybe for Christmas" category.

And if your site is one that could be targeted by more advanced methods, you better have more security than a captcha no matter how good it is.
I personally see 0 problem if my captcha solving is actually helping label or categorize images.... if I'm solving a puzzle or doing a mini task anyway on a captcha, it might as well be useful.

While I'm not a security researcher.... I am a #webdev & I absolutely see a drastic decline in brute force login attempts when I put reCaptcha on a login form. Most clients want Google Analytics anyway so they aren't super concerned with the privacy aspect of embedding 3rd party services.
Most bots trying to brute force sites aren't using elaborate captcha solving tools - they're just trying to submit the form. Even a honeypot catches many unsophisticated attacks.

Might be nice to bring back these old-timey ice doors built into the front of the house, but for packages these days. 🤣
For those who've never seen one, they have an inner & outer door so the ice man can place your ice (or milk) delivery inside. Inner door can only be opened from inside the house.

Anyone have experience with these SplatDance replacement #Nintendo #Switch controllers? They're less than half the cost of official ones ($40 vs $100 CAD).

I really struggle to reconcile the rich corporate bosses being staunch republicans and yet so many of their corporations rely on and advocate for the cheap labor their supply chains get from immigration.

Yeah I might consider that if I replace our main TV but I don't really want to set up any extra media center/box/fire stick/etc business at this time. Going to stick with what we know for now.
Our main TV is a Samsung which has been pretty good but the storage space is drastically small & the dashboard is exploding with ads which I've been in a constant wack-a-mole to block their ad domains.
I assume you need an Apple TV subscription to use the box? Does it have their competitors' apps?

The final round of this insane battle was key.
Our ranger negotiated with the kuo-toa leader to buy us an extra day before the next attack (time to find their missing artifact).
And a few characters made a desperate attempt to save one of the men being kidnapped. As Zack The Warrior's dad was being pulled into the well, 2 people grabbed him, I cast Sleep which got 1 pair of arms grabbing him, and our druid turned to a giant spider & caught him with web. Whew!!

Waaait a minute. All this time I've been thinking of the concept of a #TTRPG gaming table as a special (expensive) product with a recessed lower area for the game, that you can cover up with panels when you're done. These are very expensive.
BUT! What if you instead cut a sheet of wood to be about 6" smaller than your dining/kitchen table, sand it ultra smooth then paint it a neutral colour with a grid?
Then it sits on blocks raised UP! Your character sheets can sit on top. 😱

A well rolled fireball 🔥 from my sorceress caused a lot of damage! But then the leader of the Kuo-toa attackers rose from the water & summoned a huge tidal wave of water 🌊that carried in 3 giant sea turtles 🐢 with battering rams on their backs! They're heading for the castle gate!!
Most of our ground forces outside the gates have fallen but the "clarablaster" (played as a gatling gun in the #DnD manual) has put down a good chunk of the Kuo-toa's first rank of forces.

The #Victorious4 continued our #DnD adventures by arriving at The Keep only to find the valiant defenders exhausted & short handed due to nightly attacks from the sea!
Our DM (my husband) had dug into our Heroscape stuff and built this huge recreation of The Keep. 😁

Yes & it's great. But the bags don't have to stand up on their own (there's a pitcher style holder for them) and you don't have to stab them with a weak straw (you use scissors or a special little cutter called a Snipit).
The bags enable milk to be frozen. 😁

Fantastic. We're using a mod to play with 5 of us and it's been just a great experience of getting into trouble, following the story and sharing great loot, etc.
We made a rule to live with the concequences of our actions unless we TPK, so there's some high stakes to not screw up dialog choices or aggro enemies. So fun!
I will say that romancing NPCs is kind of off the table because it's awkward among friends, & we aren't really doing the character storylines either.

⚾ We have a space station orbiting the planet but we can't make catcher's shin guards with straps that don't pop open constantly when worn by kids.
Umpire calling timeout every batter so the catcher can rebook them. Is this some kind of "the suffering is the point" situation?

The latest upsell at the #optometrist is "myopia control" lenses for kids.
The idea is to slow the progression of #myopia (nearsightedness). About $300 more per pair. Gotta wear them till at least 18 starting at age 8-12.
But if your kid's like mine & might only need them sometimes... you now HAVE to wear them all the time.
They also reduce your peripheral vision through the lenses.
And at $300 per pair, say you buy new ones every couple years, that's around $1500 more.

When people (women mostly) say they want a village, what they really want is:
- More men to join into the childrearing/household side of labour.
- Society & employers to acknowledge the need for accommodations & flex time to allow for these things - the doctor's office is only open M-F 9-4 people!!!

I like the visual of having the pieces all sorted & easily viewed in one of these plastic parts organizers. I buy them at the dollar store.
Especially for games with a lot of grabbing specific pieces during play rather than each player getting most of *their* pieces at the start. In this latter case I do like you & keep each player's pieces in a bag.

Been reviewing the kids' RESPs & just organizing #finance stuff.
On a whim I looked up what the average #tuition at our local #Ontario university costs.
As of 2023: $6,000 / semester !!! 😭
That's double when I went there.

The CGI ads on the boards of #NHL broadcasts are absolutely not ok. 👎
It's animated even during play (!) so as I'm trying to watch the puck I've got cars whizzing across the screen, cartoon characters dancing, logos flipping around, words scrolling.
Plus the fake boards they render over the real ones are whiter & cleaner than anything else on screen & it practically glows.
This SUCKS. 😡

Dug out my old Walkman Mp3 player for my oldest son & he's so excited! 🤩 It's full of 90s & 00s alternative rock, some audio books & guided meditations. LOL a real 'treasure'.
It's his first personal device so it's perfect. 😁

There is CloudFlare in front of the sites currently, though I'm a little fuzzy on what it's doing and how because I haven't dug into that yet.
Currently the sites are sharing a big, old CentOS 7 managed server that was grandfathered into GoDaddy.
I don't care for GoDaddy hosting & I'm also not keen on multiple big sites sharing the same server because it's too "all eggs in the same basket" for me. And one of the sites is going to jump majorly in traffic next year when it launches.

Yeah a lot of static assets. My far future plan is to move them to a CDN but there are utterly thousands of them from many years of site growth so that will be a process. 😬

It's usually a vanilla WordPress site with some front-end caching plugins. Looking at breaking several high traffic sites off one big CentOS GoDaddy managed server onto smaller individual servers like DigitalOcean droplets or similar.
Unfortunately I've never had clients with sites that need much more than basic shared hosting. But this other client gets a lot of traffic to graphics-heavy WP sites.

Is there a rule of thumb or calculator that people use to estimate what size of server/VPS they'd need given application type and estimated daily visitors?
I feel like I'm usually just going by "feel" but I don't have enough server admin experience to have a trustworthy gut for this.
I'm usually building #PHP web apps with #WordPress or #Symfony.

The downside of the alternative is that you have to be online while using it so they can make sure you're only using 1 instance at a time. Then people get complain-y about that. I think both can work but per-device licenses really should give 2 devices as the absolute minimum. It's too common to have a work+home machine or a laptop+PC etc.
It always feels nitpick-y to me if it's only 1 device.
Although selling additional devices to the same user at a steep discount is pretty good too.
