While I'm not a security researcher.... I am a #webdev & I absolutely see a drastic decline in brute force login attempts when I put reCaptcha on a login form. Most clients want Google Analytics anyway so they aren't super concerned with the privacy aspect of embedding 3rd party services.
Most bots trying to brute force sites aren't using elaborate captcha solving tools - they're just trying to submit the form. Even a honeypot catches many unsophisticated attacks.
