Suburban white flight in the 50s and 60s was largely driven by a sense that "those effete city-dwellers on the coast will get nuked, but I was smart enough to move out to the middle of the country!"
But in a very early scene, Lithgow's character sits in the barber chair and disabuses everyone of that notion. He points out the large number of Minuteman missile installations in their part of the country, and dryly opines that "That's a lotta' bullseyes!" The point was to make people in places like Kansas finally wake up to the fact that the war would be on their front door in less than an hour, should hostilities escalate.

This meant I not only got verbosity for free, but all those logged messages on `stderr` would automatically go to syslog if this wasn't run from a terminal. All of a sudden my cron spam dropped and I could use existing tools to analyse problems in the logs.
You could probably also catch `-q` as a quiet option and add that to the log level calculations at the end without more verbosity.

I had used gandi.net to host my domains for years, partly because I looked at the FSF and EFF and saw which registrar they used. I reasoned those were two groups that vetted their registrars heavily for fair dealings.
But with the price hike, I need to find a new one. Is there one as reliable and solid as gandi used to be?

Being an unoccupied flat, it had some "guests" I suppose, and a giant false widow started crawling up the wall next to the kid. Instead of screaming, or jumping in fright, it just triggered a sort of disappointed crying.
I caught it in a paper cup and chucked it into the garden, but something that would have made me jump out of my skin just generated a gentle "I don't like it here." reaction from the toddler.

My instance just shut off the rate limits to the Big Instances that were put in during a time of spam, so I'm getting a *lot* of Steve Jobs Memorial posts that I wouldn't have seen if this had been left on a couple weeks more.
I don't have anything informed to say about Steve Jobs, beyond the fact that there is a certain thread of hagiographic writing about the man that is uniquely poisonous. Many books can be summed up as "The secret to his *success* was that he was an **impatient child**!!"
However accurate or inaccurate this is, it has produced a generation of "Leaders" who earnestly believe that the best way to get results is to be a raging arsehole.
Perhaps Jobs's "legacy" needs to be shelved in the back for a while, until the horrible mythology passes.

It was twenty or thirty shades of "NOPE!" and I often try to imagine what horrible efforts were made to remediate that disaster for whoever lives there now.

Vascular dementia took him away long before his body died, but in what was clearly a moment of herculean effort he summoned enough lucidity and linguistic energy to point to a freshly-campaigning Trump on television and ask "Where did they get THIS guy??"

There were projects to try and keep Darwin alive and separately-useful from OSX, but it was clear the main goal was to take from outside contributors while ensuring internal Apple changes were useless to them.
It was a pattern we'd seen before with all of the Unix companies of the 80s/90s, and was a reason we were pretty tired of moralising arguments against the GPL from the BSD folks. "Embrace and Extend" was not something Microsoft invented, but something we'd lived through many times over.
So whatever your feelings about the goals or mechanisms of the GPL, it has a simple effect: to ensure that the commons of shared work you produce will remain a commons. And that's one reason wealth-extraction organisations such as corporations don't like it. They want to contribute useful things to the public right up until it ceases to bring them profit or PR.
I think we lost a lot by letting ethically questionable people like RMS and ESR set the moral agenda around how we discussed these topics back then.
