The important thing about The Day After was that it changed the US notion of who would be affected by the war. Suburban white flight in the 50s and 60s was largely driven by a sense that "those effete city-dwellers on the coast will get nuked, but I was smart enough to move out to the middle of the country!"

But in a very early scene, Lithgow's character sits in the barber chair and disabuses everyone of that notion. He points out the large number of Minuteman missile installations in their part of the country, and dryly opines that "That's a lotta' bullseyes!" The point was to make people in places like Kansas finally wake up to the fact that the war would be on their front door in less than an hour, should hostilities escalate.
