Dear #FediAdmins, consider hosting a macro blogging platform as well if you haven’t already. Especially if your system is not on a major hosting provider, this could greatly help decentrialize the web. Poll what your users, friends and love ones might prefer, whether it is a SSG or CMS and syndicates via web feeds or emails, and help them set up and/or migrate there.
I’m asking this after noticing suggestions for Substack users to move to WordPress.com or Buttondown. WordPress.org is libre software and a good candidate for CMS; migrating to its flagship server on the other hand is not much better than transferring all eggs from one basket to another, technically and socially.
I know this is not a small request and none of you owes me any favor, I just hope some of you will agree this is the right direction to head in. If anything, hosting a (largely) static site with a rather low post frequency (almost no one is @npub1hyk…3p33) should be relatively much cheaper in system and moderation resources compared to your current fedi instance.

Yea @npub1ufm…qhp4, he did the same false advertisement for the FUTO S2T app and when I asked about it on Matrix he dodged the open-washing issue multiple times and instead directing attention to the license was temporary and they’re planning to improve it. Ugh twas really frustrating and as if he couldn’t comprehend he’s doing exactly what the New York governor did to his right to repair bill.

Yes, @npub19am…qjn6, and also the utilities (some of which could be trivially implemented in Scheme but there are also e.g. XML and YAML).
Regarding overloading, for context the research targets are programs, so I often has to replace compilers with a custom one for e.g. profiling or adding/skipping steps, and compile multiple versions (which sometimes build differently) for the same environment. For example, here is one artifact I’m preparing. I’m suppose there are similar toolings in guix but it’s not in my face like stdenv and a wiki article.
To be fair, I got a few years of head start with nix and contributed quite a bit to nixpkgs to learn it, though now I’m not sure if it’s an excuse or that I’m passively aggressively complaining about the lack of guix maintainers to look at my patches and help me learn. It seems to me guix is facing a chicken and egg problem where it could be easier to get started with a larger user (knowledge) base, and the user base couldn’t grow really fast if the leaning curve remains difficult to climb.

Wouldn’t claim it to be objective, @npub19am…qjn6, but I don’t think the tooling could be considered by itself alone. I use nix in my software engineering research on a workstation running guix system solely because most dependencies are already in nixpkgs. While I do prefer guix’s insistence on bootstrapping, devendoring and compiling from source, time and energy does not allow me go an extra mile and declare the missing packages.
Documentation of nix libraries are also more available, and perhaps I don’t know guix enough but overriding and overloading packages on nix requires repeating myself less often.

Hmmm @npub1a3h…m44m, doesn’t seem to be POSIX, but most libc seem to provide bswap(3) which I’d use optionally #if the target is big endian, then cast to the target struct.
I don’t think there’s a better way at machine level, e.g. in Zig with comptime and @byteSwap builtin it would look less like a hack but 🤷

Where Perl, @npub17es…clcm? FWIW Python env setup can really cheap if thou only usest std lib and OS packages. There’s also Crystal which is almost syntactically compatible with Ruby if thy coworkers are into that, and don’t forget about Lua.

As conclusions, we could say that the Fediverse is getting decentralized in terms of server distribution (first analysis) but, in contrast, software usage is becoming less diverse.
I would say it’s a price to be paid when even the analysis include Misskey and Diaspora instances as Mastodon servers. The graphs also made me realize that I probably have color sex daily.

Yea @npub1kpw…xzz4, the same for bodybuilding and ballet. The impacted population is too small for it to be written into laws IMHO, but I should be legally allow to parent my children when I have them in at least convincing them not to walk down such path.
@npub12j3…y6qj, there’s a thick line between gender dysphoria and LARPing, and IIUC reasonable conservatives worry about children making choices at the age the brain hasn’t mature enough to. If something involves severe and irreversible consequences (detransitioning at a later age is as ineffective as transitioning AFAICT), false positive should be critically minimized. Even for reversible choices like housing, education and occupation, letting a preadolescents to decide is hardly a good idea (and totally dismissing their opinion is also as damaging).

@npub17eh…94rr, I was commenting on how ridiculous DMCA is, not what it contains. Clarify authors as copyright holder, and it becomes equivalent to cutting or picking the lock on your bike being illegal and providing the tools meaning jail time.
As for modification, interleaving ads would qualify IMHO (the file format is irrelevant, e.g. video and audio are separate files for the highest quality on YouTube but playback is considered to be a of a single medium). If the aderivation is legally recognized, ad blocking would counts as circumventing copyright protection and illegal. Since current DCMA came into existence, I have no doubt similar greed-driven laws will be written into laws.
