Yes, , and also the utilities (some of which could be trivially implemented in Scheme but there are also e.g. XML and YAML).

Regarding overloading, for context the research targets are programs, so I often has to replace compilers with a custom one for e.g. profiling or adding/skipping steps, and compile multiple versions (which sometimes build differently) for the same environment. For example, here is one artifact I’m preparing. I’m suppose there are similar toolings in guix but it’s not in my face like stdenv and a wiki article.

To be fair, I got a few years of head start with nix and contributed quite a bit to nixpkgs to learn it, though now I’m not sure if it’s an excuse or that I’m passively aggressively complaining about the lack of guix maintainers to look at my patches and help me learn. It seems to me guix is facing a chicken and egg problem where it could be easier to get started with a larger user (knowledge) base, and the user base couldn’t grow really fast if the leaning curve remains difficult to climb.
