I'm working with a super-bright potential PhD applicant who is applying for a scholarship, who's struggling to get her ideas into the 1000 wordcount limit that the application requires. I don't think she's going to get the money. And it's tearing me up, because without the scholarship she's not going to be able to come here.
It's not that she can't do a PhD. She just can't make it sexy in 1000 words -- and that's not actually a relevant skill!

Couple thoughts, this rainy Sunday morning.
1. Your future self is your friend and partner. Sometimes you do them a favour (eat right, brush your teeth, etc.) but sometimes you have to ask them to do you a solid.
Last night, I asked my future self to take care of the dishes for me. I was tired. I couldn't bear the thought.
THis morning, I, who have become last night's future self, knocked them all out in the amount of time it took to boil water for coffee..

My friends, it has finally happened! My software problem has been solved by a guy on youtube with 36 subscribers and a pair of videos totalling less than 40 likes and under 400 views combined.
For those who are interested, it's about getting Scrivener 3 to work on linux and sync with dropbox. I can confirm, it works.

A fantasy:
1. Biden uses his presidential immunity + no-fucks-leftitude to expand the supreme court, restore abortion rights, fix immigration, cancel all student debt, raise the minimum wage, impose medicare for all, etc.
2. GOP sues. Presidential immunity? No not like that!
3. The expanded supreme court agrees, restores checks and balances.
4. Biden leaves, cases against Trump go forward once more. The only temporary beneficiary of presidential immunity was Biden.
Wouldn't that be nice?

They say 'if your objection is honoured it will be applied going forward,' which sounds like some bullshit thing where they decide not to honour it, but when I submitted I got an immediate automated confirmation that they'd honour it, so if you want to keep using instagram, make sure to click the link and tell Meta to kick rocks.

When I think about healthcare debates, where conservatives constantly bring up the bogeyman of 'rationing grandma's healthcare', an enlightening statistic about food rationing during WWII springs to mind.
Overall public nutrition *improved* during WWII rationing.
Why? Because existing inequality led to such dire malnutrition among the poor that the introduction of rationing ensured they got adequate food for the first time in their lives.
Anyway. I'm sure that's not relevant here, of course.

It's only just occurred to me *decades* late that the joke of 'The Addams Family Values' is based on ambiguous phrase structure. We could have [Addams Family] modifying 'values', as in Fig 1 -- the intended interpretation, but there's also the alternative bracketing which is automatically invoked by the highly frequent collocation 'family values'.
It's rather a brilliant film title!
(don't come at me for using X' schemas. I like 'em, they serve my non-syntactician needs)
