I'm working with a super-bright potential PhD applicant who is applying for a scholarship, who's struggling to get her ideas into the 1000 wordcount limit that the application requires. I don't think she's going to get the money. And it's tearing me up, because without the scholarship she's not going to be able to come here.
It's not that she can't do a PhD. She just can't make it sexy in 1000 words -- and that's not actually a relevant skill!
