When I think about healthcare debates, where conservatives constantly bring up the bogeyman of 'rationing grandma's healthcare', an enlightening statistic about food rationing during WWII springs to mind.
Overall public nutrition *improved* during WWII rationing.
Why? Because existing inequality led to such dire malnutrition among the poor that the introduction of rationing ensured they got adequate food for the first time in their lives.
Anyway. I'm sure that's not relevant here, of course.
