Feeling bad sometimes that because of my MECFS I have kind of dropped the ball on touching base with some of my more vulnerable friends. Namely the ones you have to chase down to make sure they are ok every few months/The ones struggling with addiction who just dip off the radar.
Sometimes it breaks my heart. You can text, but when someone's phone stops working or they just drop off the earth I don't have the spoons to call six people to make sure they've seen you in the last week.
Leaving the meta platform made it a lot harder too. It doesn't mean my love stopped. I feel like in some ways the MECFS means I fail in community care where I used to be pretty strong and it makes me sad.
I hope my friends are doing ok. Wherever they are. I can't cruise past a place to make sure like I used to. Especially when I don't live in the same city anymore.

Covid lockdown didn't make me trans or autistic, but it did teach me what euphoria felt like.
Lockdown allowed me to unmask for maybe the first time in my entire life and it was wonderful, but when it came time to put the mask back on, I literally couldn't. I was really worried about my mental health because of that. Turns out I maybe should have been more worried about my mental health while I was masking. It took an autistic therapist to help me piece it all together.
I haven't worn a 'proper' bra since 2020.
I took it off when i left my last shift on the ship where I had been locked in my cabin under quarantine for over a week and it never went back on. I didn't have covid but my coworker had been to India on his last shift off and had gotten sick and I was still recovering from my fourth round of walking pneumonia from strep and had a bad cough.
I had a funny feeling I'd never be returning to sea. My doctor told me to get the fuck off my ship asap, and so I did.
I've known i was non-binary for quite a long time and was pretty open about it but nothing prepared me for the feeling of not seeing my chest hoisted to my chin on a daily basis. For the first time ever I could look in the mirror and not criticize my body. I don't think i'd have put two and two together regarding dysphoria if my partner hadn't been going through her own transition, but it started to sink in more.
I started learning to sew in lockdown and found out I have an H cup chest. Before I came out as non-binary a friend referred to me as a bombshell and I wanted to die. I didn't have words for why, but i became aware the shell I had built to house my body was doing its job, and it made me so profoundly sad. It helped me realize why I consistently felt at odds in all my romantic relationships. That was when I really realized I needed to come out.
Needless to say, binding when you have a pontoon boat strapped to your chest isn't really effective, but i have a couple of compression tanks and a bandeau that i kind of use to keep things from getting too out of hand. For the moment, top surgery is covered where I live, but I have profound medical distrust after years of chronic pain and medical gaslighting, on top of all of this I was diagnosed with mecfs after my final bout of walking pneumonia and I worry about the stress of surgery on my already disregulated body at a hospital where no one masks.
I think my chest is something I've come to accept as kind of a ridiculously funny trait more than anything. It's like learning to live with a wonky front tooth or pointy ears or something. I'm never going to embody the complete androgyny I crave as an agender person, but I'm ok with my funny tits. I feel great when they hang down low, even if they make me look a little softer around the middle than I am. I found myself in so many ways over the last five years and I'm deeply grateful for that.

Maybe the biggest cooking tip I've had to embrace these days is: Sit Down
Probably the most exhausting part about being a ship's cook was standing on a steel floor 12 hours a day. Now I'm lucky if I can manage half an hour on a fatigue mat at most.
I boiled some eggs for Korean mayak gyeran (drug eggs) this morning. I don't care that I'm a messy peeler these days and I'm sitting down and taking breaks between eggs. They will get peeled eventually. These eggs are addictive, as per the name, and keep in the fridge for a few days, so instant breakfast or lunch.
And I'm not doing everything at once. The peeled eggs can stay in the fridge for a couple of hours until I have some energy to make the marinade.

I've been thinking quite a bit about the bizarre evolution of cottage core into trad wife. Leading up to covid I watched it slowly morph among acquaintances, mainly cis het femmes. They went from leftists to farm marms, as did a lot of the cis het arts community I once surrounded myself with. Covid turned up the heat and even more of them went full anti-vax. It's like they got to a point where they were going to have to face our reality and immediately stuffed their heads in the sand by trying to back tread historically on everything, as if that would somehow negate the reality facing us. It's fucking spooky how people can evaporate on themselves like that.

My heirloom seed potatoes kept disappearing until we realized a feline fellow had taken an interest in them. It's been a battle for the last week not to have him knock the eyes off while they are chitting.

Tiny sprouts survived the torrential downpour last night, the lettuce being a little melodramatic as was expected. Turnips and beets seem happier already and the perpetual leeks were already pretty sturdy. Direct sowed some radish clusters and parsley, and did some more starts - A red kale and a lacinato, some holy basil which does far better here than the other basils, and which we also use a load of for Thai cooking and a bunch of cilantro.
15 mins of work does a huge amount for my mental health and sense of accomplishment in a day. It's not lost on me that I have the privilege of a supportive partner who also likes to garden and moves my bags of soil around for me among many other things, but gardening feels like something I can still do with mecfs and I'm so grateful for that.

Sometimes I forget that most people don't have serious anxiety about the sensory overload of having a shower. I spent years trying to find exactly the right smells and products to make things less overwhelming, and less allergic and then would not change them for years, and then had a meltdown when I couldn't get them anymore. Same with laundry products. I think that's been a thing I've done for years. Find the thing that makes me look and feel the most "normal" when perceived by others and then never change it. I think that was even the case with my gender for years.
Do I have issues with this? No because I have A,B&C. - but if I didn't I'd be a ball of human in the closet in tears.
Good lord I hate being wet and the feeling of water evaporating on my skin, but simultaneously, I love to swim, I just hate getting out. I would stay in until I was a hypothermic grape just to not have to get out and feel my wet hair and skin.
These days i couple my shower anxiety with mecfs exhaustion and it feels like a serious internal battle most of the time, but I managed to have one today. It took three hours to get the volition, but I'm clean and uncomfortable. I would blow dry my hair if I could take the sound.

One thing I am doing for my ME these days, is remembering to lie down. I was a human doing in my old life and it's sometimes hard to break that cycle. At a few points in the day, i just lie down and it lets me pay attention to my body. If my body says 'yes, this is where i need to be.' I stay there. No guilt. Just rest.

I've been watching a lot of walks these days, and I've notice many rock walls in Kobe are built with the rocks placed on their points/diagonally and I'm wondering if it's strictly a local aesthetic or if there is a benefit in seismic activity for building them like that. It seems that they more flex more like woven fabric that way, but also maybe lock in tighter than flat laid stone, but I don't know enough about structural engineering when it comes to seismic. Anyone have any insight?

Haida potatoes. My heart is excited to grow them and keep growing them for ever and ever. There's a very good chance they are pre-settler potatoes based on stories from elders in Alaska and BC. They are traced to Mexican and Peruvian cultivars with no european hybridization and have been cultivated on Haida Gwaii for over 200 years and likely far longer. The thing that really boggles my mind is how so many Americans don't seem to understand how tariffs work or that they pay the tariffs that Trump has placed, not us. Canadians didn't make their electrical prices go up. Trump did. We just set counter tariffs to slow the import of American goods in Canada.

I once had a retiring beekeeper let me taste his different batches of honey. They were so varied depending on the area the pollen was collected. The most amazing one was a batch where the bees had been collecting pollen around an area that had a bush fire and it tasted like toasted marshmallows.

Every time you don't wear a mask in public, you signal to every disabled and immunocompromised person and their loved ones that you don't believe they deserve to be able to participate in day to day life safely.

I'm an ex backcountry hiker, so i'd say wool, but i'm also allergic to wool. I can sometimes handle merino or merino blend and I'm fine with alpaca but not rich enough to afford either of them most of the time. Next best is synthetic fleece unfortunately.

As a trained firefighter I'm astounded/horrified at the number of reporters not wearing masks while reporting on the fires in LA.
A good story isn't worth sacrificing your life and health to hydrocarbons and burning plastic. The average home in 2025 is so toxic while burning that it's hard to watch; far more toxic than homes historically have ever been throughout history. This is something they drilled into us deeply while training.
The cause and effect can be long term and utterly devastating. A mask is gonna save your life in the coming years, be it pandemic or flames.
Wear a mask, shower often. Wash your hands before you eat. A lot of firefighters died before we figured out those basics.
