it's good there are a few, at least, and you can try to keep the culture alive in the area, even get non-Teochew interested in the foods.
Because reading through I've got memories of those beef meatballs in a clear soup, with perfectly cooked jasmine rice, for breakfast.

reading through this all the dishes of my teen years are coming back. I always knew them as "Chinese Cambodian dishes" when I lived there, as the article makes out, many were afraid to identify as Teochew, even after Pol Pot was long gone.
I still remember my dad's driver taking us to his house, meeting his family, explaining where his family came from in China

On a side note, so often food journalists have mangled David Tran's words, and made out that he "invented sriracha sauce", which I see he's tried to fix of late - not his fault, they just didn't listen to his words. It's good that the article starts with acknowledging sriracha isn't Teochew, let alone invented by him. 😁
It's a hot sauce ALL of Asia loves, and loved, long before any Californian had ever tasted Huy Fong 😆

so many overlaps between Teochew and Thai cooking, but that's not surprising.
My step-mother was Teochew, I think 4th generation, Thai, and still had strong links to Teochew culture. She'd cook a mix of Thai and Teochew foods, but it was hard to tell what was what 😆

interesting, maybe just nothing they want in the area, or they've found more densely populated areas more advantageous for foraging. I suspect why they keep turning up in the city here in Melbourne (there's been a few lately).
Unfortunately their numbers are exploding, unchecked, in the bush here, which isn't great as they have no natural predators to keep the numbers down

I'd be down for that. I'm not usually in a rush, and I just want to get stuff done, maybe talk with the cashier.
Not just for myself, I get how isolating it is to have people 50cm from you who barely acknowledge your existence.
I find it's a much more pleasant shopping experience to interact with a human rather than just have one stand there like a security guard.
That said, I do use self-checkouts if I am time-poor or it's one or two things; a good mix would be nice

I love being lectured on climate change by people who own and drive cars.
My climate footprint is so fucking small from having NEVER FUCKING OWNED OR DRIVEN A CAR that I could eat meat and fly in planes for the rest of my life and never come close to the climate destruction a single car own has visited on this planet.

yeh, if you read why they did it, there's just no market for them to comercialise it in the global north as they don't have Vitamin A deficiencies, and I'm guessing trying to commercialise it in the global south would give them less (tax) benefit than using it for humanitarian uses.

This is why I have zero respect for Greenpeace.
A crop that could save 250k-500k children in the global south, and because it's openly GM, unlike all the rice, wheat, and barley, varieties that are available in the global north (Calrose, Amaroo, etc), Greenpeace are opposed to it.
