Everyone complains that stores put out holiday stuff wayyyy too early. Here's the thing: they wouldn't do it if it didn't work. If people just stopped buying Christmas stuff in July, they'd stop stocking it. We are in a hell of our own making.

I think parents need to teach their kids that adults shouldn't ask children to keep secrets. And that there is a difference between a secret and a surprise. A secret they never want you to tell. A surprise has a time limit, and it has a good result for the person you're keeping the information from. There's a huge difference between "let's surprise mom with a party" and "don't tell anyone ever or else I'll hurt you/your family will hate you/they'll take you away/etc." Too many kids don't know when to tell an adult that something terrible is going on. Then again, you also have to be a safe person for your child to tell, and they have to have other safe people in their lives. Ask me how I know.

I see a lot of "I survived..." memes from Boomers and Gen-Xers. Spankings, playgrounds, drinking from the hose, you name it. Yeah, you survived. But 1) There are those who didn't. And 2) One would think you'd do more than survive your childhood. God forbid you actually THRIVED. Can you thrive under those conditions you brag about when combined with all the other conditions of those eras? I don't know.
