I think parents need to teach their kids that adults shouldn't ask children to keep secrets. And that there is a difference between a secret and a surprise. A secret they never want you to tell. A surprise has a time limit, and it has a good result for the person you're keeping the information from. There's a huge difference between "let's surprise mom with a party" and "don't tell anyone ever or else I'll hurt you/your family will hate you/they'll take you away/etc." Too many kids don't know when to tell an adult that something terrible is going on. Then again, you also have to be a safe person for your child to tell, and they have to have other safe people in their lives. Ask me how I know.
