@npub16ef…dztx This is an excellent book. I've been using Linux for over 20 years and I either learned a lot of new things or remembered a lot of things I had forgotten. It's not a huge book and can easily be read cover to cover unlike a lot of technical books.

@npub1zzj…9ng0 I wish more people used PGP. In all my years of using PGP there was only one company that supported PGP for client communications. I also worked with a fellow paranoid sysadmin who would encrypt everything if he could find a public key for you. It was funny to get an encrypted email that said "yo, bbq for lunch?"
I have since let my keys expire or just revoked them since nobody was using them anyway.

I've been toying with setting up Lemmy and Mastodon instances just for my own use and I think I've decided against it. I deal with this bs all day for a living. I don't think I want to mess with it more when I get off work.
Maybe I'm paranoid but I don't think I'd even try without a properly hardened server, heavily firewalled and running behind a WAF/CDN. Once you do all of that you've pretty much taken all of the fun out of running an instance IMO.

Block Lemmy instances because a couple of them got hacked? Please don't break federation unnecessarily.
#Lemmy has been around for about 4 years but obviously just started getting some real attention so there will be more vulnerabilities found and exploited.

@npub165x…4s6s I think we're in the same boat. In the end, it's all federated but I think I want more control over my data. It might get messy but I wouldn't have it any other way. Also doing things the hard way is just kinda central to who I am.

With the current #reddit exodus, there are lots of new #lemmy instances popping up and I think that is great. But...
I have seen some of the larger instances having tech problems and downtime. I worry about who is running those instances. I've been a #sysadmin focused mostly on #linux for over 25 years and I don't have enough faith in my skills to ask others to trust me with their online presence.
Even though it seems like overkill, maybe I'm better off hosting an instance just for me?

@npub1n8v…6u4m That's certainly a valid concern. As much as I enjoy tinkering with the OS I must admit that it's nice for the OS to just get out of my way and let me get things done. MacOS does just that. I don't think about the OS at all. I manage packages with brew and I use Magnet as my window organizer. I'm running Zsh and iterm2 and have all of the command line tools I need just like I would on a Linux machine.

@npub1hs4…5aza You aren't wrong but I am not going to stand up for my ideals at the expense of my kids' success. Once they are proficient in whatever corporate America uses I would support them learning less popular alternatives if they want to.

Linux for students has always been a bad idea. Students need to be proficient with the environment they will use in their careers. That environment is very unlikely to include a Linux desktop. Like it or not, Windows and Microsoft Office are the standard with Apple coming in a distant second.
