Yes, it's a pity the wind tends to stand still when the temperature falls a lot. Even across a large country such as Finland wind speed is highly correlated.
So when it gets really cold it's a triple whammy of higher consumption, higher market price and (with a heat pump) lower efficiency. If that lasts long it's a problem.
It's better than last winter, but we are not there yet.

I tried a hood for a while. Indeed, it kills hearing (your ears are inside) and peripheral vision. And it has a much lower fit factor. In fact, I would wear a 3M Aura inside.
With the full face mask your ears are outside, so you can still hear well, and the impact to peripheral vision is less. You mostly end up with a blind spot downwards.
This combination has an APF of 500 (if it fits you well).

I's a mixed picture and covid is likely implicated, but Malta, Cyprus and Greece stand out, probably for a different reason.
"In July 2023, fourteen EU Member States recorded excess deaths and among those, the highest rates were observed in Malta (53.3 %), Cyprus (20.4 %), Greece (19.6 %) and Ireland (13.7 %). The high values for Malta, Cyprus and Greece are very likely related to the heatwaves in that month."
This is the #ClimateCrisis killing and we can see it in the news and the stats now.
It gets worse until we stop burning fossil fuels, and the more we burn the faster it gets worse.

Boa ideia essa de usar a espuma da 3M Aura na Moldex. Eu vou ficando com umas que provavelmente ainda estão em bom estado quando são os elásticos que se partem rápido.
Como fizeste para fixar a espuma? Preocupa-me um pouco a ideia de usar adesivos tão perto do meu nariz ainda que em princípio não deva passar ar por aí.

Os resultados são individuais, dependem da combinação da forma da cara com a máscara. É como a roupa, que serve a uns e não a outros, mas com as máscaras está bastante mais em jogo.
Eu testei 4 máscaras:
- Uma JEDX KN-95 FFP2 earloop que já não usava desde a primavera de 2021 por me parecer que não selava bem. Falhou o teste em segundos. Já ouvi isso de bastante gente e fiquei com suspeitas sobre earloop em geral.
- A 3M Aura 9330+ FFP3 com headstraps que passou sem problemas, e ainda uso. As 3M Aura aparentemente encaixam bem em muitas caras e são portanto uma boa opção para quem não quer testar.
- Uma Moldex 3200 FFP3 também com headstraps que falhou, mas só depois de algum tempo e com alguma movimentação. Deixei de usar. Uma pena porque o sistema de headstraps é muito práctico, serve para pendurar a máscara no pescoço quando não em uso.
- E a Sundström SR-200 (full face elastomeric) que também passou sem problemas e ainda uso. Essa foi um pouco mais chata de testar porque é mais volumosa com o filtro à frente e não cabia no capuz que usei inicialmente. Tive que sacrificar um balde de plástico e fazer-lhe um buraco para encaixar a saída do nebulizador.
A mim parece-me que a SR-200 tem um selo absolutamente incrível, mas precisaria de outra metodologia para aferir a vantagem sobre a 3M Aura.
Seria preciso fazer quantitative fit testing, o que já exige outro nível de equipamento.
Sou capaz de o fazer eventualmente...

I don't drive, because I viscerally realised in my early 20s I can't really do it safely.
I don't think most people can drive safely consistently. Over time I have grown more and more convinced of this.
I think the stats agree with me.
So I have wanted cars to drive themselves. And it will happen eventually.
As the population ages this will only get worse. I saw some of my father's last months' driving and it's a miracle nobody got killed.
But now I just want a lot less cars.
Yeah, by all means those that can't be avoided must be electric and self-driving will have benefits, including safety eventually.
There's the fact that we are running out of time to decarbonise, and can't replace smoking cars with non-smoking EVs fast enough. We need to have fewer cars driving fewer Kms.
But it's more than that. Cars suck. Car-centric use of space sucks. Car-oriented lifestyles suck.

It depends on how you define it, but even 1.5% is quite significant considering full recovery looks unlikely for those most affected, the odds of LC are repeated or even aggravated on reinfections, and people are getting frequently reinfected.
That's even before considering less well understood longer term risks as at least some people (maybe many) don't fully clear the virus and may be storing up trouble for later.
I'm going to leave you with Augie's list of studies covering increased risk of all sorts of conditions (including I bet many of the ones your friend doctors are concerned with) and damage to many organs and systems.
In case you ever want to look. You may also want to check excess mortality figures. People are still being harmed and dying as a result of COVID, beyond the accute phase.

People have accepted the narrative they get from the "responsible" authorities.
"If it were really that bad they would tell us, they would not tell us to go back to normal".
Maybe they have accepted that a better world is not possible, which they have also heard a lot.
It does look to me though that many people are dismissing any attempt to call attention to the risks.
I get that a lot with people I know. "It's just another respiratory virus", "I'm vaccinated, it's just a flu now", "I had already".
With many I just stopped touching the subject.
But maybe that's just a coping mechanism or a quick answer to push back.

I don't see "machine" as a category of things. I see it as a way of looking at things and thinking about them.
In terms of parts that work together to do something, through "mechanisms" that you hope to understand.
You can look at aspects of almost anything as a machine, including all the examples you listed. It doesn't mean they *are* machines.

From where I stand, at this point I don't see much difference between the far left, the far right or pretty much anything in between when it comes to masking, reducing transmission or keeping health care safe. Unlike in climate action where there is clearly a difference.
Everybody found their way of dismissal and denial everywhere in the spectrum.
I don't see any will for collective action or solidarity in either. Leftists are apparently just as OK with the very uneven impacts of unrestricted transmission as the right.
Both left and the right are also quite vocal about what to do with our failing health care systems. None of it includes infection prevention.
In case you wonder, my politics are center-left, and I too imagined there would be more will and solidarity on the left. I don't see it now.

Não sei como são na verdade as curvas de degradação dos filtros. Deve depender muito do que anda no ar. E suponho que deve ser diferente para os vários componentes do filtro. Suspeito que o de carbono activado deve perder rendimento mais rápido.
Não sei o que o purificador está a medir para decidir quando acende a luz. Pode ser simplesmente tempo.
Na práctica teria que medir desempenho para saber.
Acredito que limpar o pre-filtro regularmente ajude a extender a vida. É o que tenho feito.

Eu ando a ponderar eventualmente comprar um medidor para saber efectivamente o que estou a respirar no sítio onde estou. Porque os vários serviços apresentam-me valores muito diferentes. Acho que dependem de redes de sensores esparsas e interpolação. Parece-me que as variações a pequena escala devem ser importantes, e claro no interior depende do que acontece dentro.

Eu tenho o Plasmawave no meu desligado porque não sei ao certo se produz VOC (compostos orgânicos voláteis) ou não nem em que quantidade. Provavelmente até nem produz muito (ver artigo), e o filtro de carbono activado iria remover bastante mas o peritos que eu tenho seguido são algo cépticos em relação a tudo o que vá para além de filtrar o ar, que é o essencial. Sometimes I get the impression all they need to drop a bit further in any particular aspect is a precedent. Country X has dropped mask mandates in aviation? We need to do that too, or we are not competitive! Country Y has dropped them in health care? Perfect, we'll do it as well soon. Claro que não. Para além das baixas mais ou menos longas, vamos ter muita gente com problemas crónicos de saúde mais cedo, com vários graus de incapacidade para viver e trabalhar. Isso não sai barato.

Pois. Designaram os grupos em risco de frequentar os hospitais - ou as casas funerárias - como consequência imediata da infecção, na fase aguda, mas quem quiser olhar para além dessa perspectiva estreita vê que estamos todos em risco, uns apenas já têm menos saúde para perder.

Mesma história na FI. Actualização só para grupos designados de risco.
Não é que fosse fazer muito para evitar infecção, mas sempre salvaria algumas pessoas de ir parar ao hospital ou apanhar COVID Longo já na próxima rodada.
Máscaras de qualidade bem ajustadas, ventilação, filtragem, redução de contactos, sprays nasais (provavelmente), ... tudo isso continua a funcionar especialmente em combinação.

"This is the mask you wear when nobody else does" has crossed my mind a few times in connection with the full face elastomeric respirator I wear in shared indoor spaces. I don't care enough about what others think to bother though.
