It depends on how you define it, but even 1.5% is quite significant considering full recovery looks unlikely for those most affected, the odds of LC are repeated or even aggravated on reinfections, and people are getting frequently reinfected.
That's even before considering less well understood longer term risks as at least some people (maybe many) don't fully clear the virus and may be storing up trouble for later.

I'm going to leave you with Augie's list of studies covering increased risk of all sorts of conditions (including I bet many of the ones your friend doctors are concerned with) and damage to many organs and systems.

In case you ever want to look. You may also want to check excess mortality figures. People are still being harmed and dying as a result of COVID, beyond the accute phase.
