The *most* keyboard-navigable GUI in my experience was the Windows 3.x series, as it was designed as mouse-optional (but greatly preferable) software. Even then, it was a lot of random keystrokes and a LOT of tab-tab-tab to get to the element you want.

That platform has been an absolute #enshittification machine, exporting the worst ideas everywhere else.
As much as the iPhone delighted me from 2007 to about 2017, I now would rather that it never existed.

I tried #FreeBSD on my #Thinkpad X200 for a couple months.
Very capable OS, but boy was it ever slow to resume from S3 Suspend. On the order of 30 seconds.

This is one of two modern UI design fetishes that makes me want to scream.
1) Completely unusable scrollbars that are trying to pretend you're on iOS
2) Almost undetectable active window indicators. The active and inactive titlebars have to be the same color, for some braindead reason.
I appreciate that some desktops like #KDE #Plasma and (iirc) #COSMIC are configurable enough to fix that oversight, but I still don't understand why they do that by default.

It's a little more advanced, but I also like #OpenBSD, which is a very different Unix-like OS.
Also, avoid dual-booting if you can. MS loves whacking linux bootloaders randomly with updates. It's pretty easy to get a windows vm in linux if that's something you need. Look at https://github.com/quickemu-project/quickgui

Ventoy is a great tool.
My advice: don't let the paradox of choice paralyze you. Pick something decent and just run with it for a few months.
Try to stick with any one distro and desktop for at least a month. Don't listen to the naysayers. Criticism can be helpful, but you're just getting your feet wet. You'll gain lots of experience, and if you tried to heed *everyone's* advice, you'd just spin in a circle and open a portal to crazyland. 😆

After using my X260 for a while and being back on the #PinebookPro as my quasi-daily-driver, I have to say just how amazing the screen on this thing is.
14", crisp, 1080p, Active Matrix and/or IPS. VERY nice screen. I've been so spoiled the past three years because of this screen. The X260's screen is probably 12", murky STN, 1366x768 (the resolution isn't that big a deal, though).
The keyboard is also very crisp and enjoyable to type on, although the trackpad is poor.

Yeah, it's a Rockchip ARM board.
I've only run Manjaro (here comes the BTW guys, lol), EndeavourOS (same, lol), and Armbian (pretty purely Debian-based, although they have an Ubuntu flavor, as well).
The app availability from the debian repos is solid, but flatpak is not as good as amd64. Same goes for AUR.

I found a set of laptop screws on #LexCorp that not only fit the holes at the top (hinge-side) perfectly, the head of the screws are bigger than stock, so it holds the bottom plate (with its now-enlarged screw holes) in place, anchoring the hinge properly.

Hey #AskFedi,
I'm looking for a #FOSS program that merges duplicate contacts in vcf or csv format.
I found vcf_contacts_merger, but it has weird python requirements that I just couldn't manage to satisfy.
Ideally either a downloadable linux app or a FOSS #Android app (or at least a non-foss Android app that I can run with networking privileges revoked).
It can't be a google app or rely on uploading my contacts to "the cloud."

I've slept on both too soft and fairly firm beds. It doesn't take long to get used to it, in my experience.
Man complaint I've heard about memory foam mattresses is that they can be too hot

How much RAM? The last time I tried to do some rustc on my #PinebookPro (slightly faster than a Pi4, 4GB RAM) I *think* the OOM-killer got it. It died unceremoniously. ;)

I resist going through that because a lot of my machines just can't handle the resource demands of rustc, but this is my work machines, so yeah, I'm
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh
as we speak. ;)

package `winit v0.29.15` cannot be built because it requires rustc 1.65.0 or newer, while the currently active rustc version is 1.63.0

Yes, attempting the cargo install on #Debian now. (Not very hopeful, cargo really wants you to do the rustup dance for most things to install correctly, and I might just prefer to deal with the older package in the #Debian repo, but I'm giving it the old college try ;)

Hmm! Available on #Debian, #OpenBSD, and #NetBSD package repos, NICE!
No binary download, so hopefully an 8-month-old-and-aging version from the debian repo will work fine, because I ain't messin' with cargo. XD

Hey #AskFedi,
I'm looking for a good X11 terminal that does a good job of using a fallback font like "Noto Color Emoji" to render glyphs (such as emojis) that aren't present in the main font.
My favorite terminal right now is #foot, but it is #wayland-only, and I need an option for systems where Wayland either isn't a viable option at all (#NetBSD, #OpenBSD), or just not a *good* option yet (*cough*, #KDE #Plasma).
The only features I really care about is emoji and easy font resizing.

I've been trying to figure out how to live with a PDA-type (non-cellular) device and a mifi (the @npub1606…yxcd sells private MiFi memberships, both 4G and 5G for a reasonable price)
I just can't find any viable solution for getting an internet-based phone number WITH SMS support. All of the generic SIP plans are prohibitively expensive per SMS message, and the only affordable things are Google Voice (ICK!) and Line2 (still tied to Android).
