Plummer, feeling that the jig was up, provided Fiorello La Guardia with piles of documents detailing how the financial press was publishing "ballyhoo" for cash. Arthur N. Plummer, AKA A. Newton Plummer, was indicted in January 1932 for "Forgery" along with eight others. His crime was paying newspaper reporters to publish positive stories about companies to encourage investors to purchase shares of their stock. At 45 minutes, someone noticed that the sedan was 1. Unlocked, 2. Running, 3. With the keys on the seat.
Some brave soul got into the car and moved it down the block and left it (still running and unlocked) in a hospital-only spot. Traffic broke free. The guy came and bought the saw. At 55 minutes, the car was still running and unlocked. And unstolen. I went home. As did the rest of the crowd.

We went closer to check it out. A hospital administrator, wearing scrubs, told us that the U-Haul, had come all the way from Michigan, didn’t know how to get around city streets, and got stuck. He was towing a car on a trailer attached to the U-Haul.
The sedan was not trying to get around him, he was trying to get around the sedan, which was double parked across from the hospital. We’re at about 40 minutes of being stuck with a car double parked on a narrow side street

Trempé, je cours à la boulangerie la plus proche. Rien. Je ne peux pas courir plus parce que mes baskets sont maintenant glissants.
Je marche vers un autre patisserie plus loin de chez nous.
Je reçois un texto de ma fille (qui n'a pas de portable, donc elle doit être deja à la maison).
Je reviens chez nous et trouve une fille sèche avec patisserie et baguette, stressée par la disparition de son père.

J'ai passé le matin à la fac, lisant des vieux journaux et je suis parti pour déjeuner chez moi avant le debut du travail à New York à 15h. J'ai donné quelques pieces à ma fille pour aller chercher un gouter, puis m'a connecté au bureau.
Trois minutes plus tard, j'entends le bruit de tonner et la deluge.
Je saute et file dehors avec parapluie et cours à la patisserie. Il y avait un papier collé à la porte: "ouverture 16h". Pas de fille.

A lot of my knowledge of French political machinations is based on the idea that the presidential election and legislatives happen in close succession, and DeGaulle designed the V Republic that way so that he could take decisive action in Algeria. Macron has somewhat blown that connection, and it will be interesting to see what a divided AN can do with a hostile president and senat.

I had a beer at a café this afternoon with a friend who has a law office here in Paris. It was just after 4pm, and there was a steady stream of people heading into the polling place in a middle school. We were talking about our worries over the election today and the one in the US in November.
There were a lot of people going in to vote (in a neighborhood where the outcome was pretty certainly to the left).
I'm pretty happy with today's outcome.

C’est 15h20 à Paris et début de la journée de travail à New York il y a vingt minutes. Mon ordinateur de travail a commencé à se mettre à jour il y a dix minutes. La voisine en haut a commencé à répéter sur sa flûte. Elle joue mal.
La température s’approche à 30° dans l’appartement et le chat veut encore plus de pâté. RDV sur zoom avec le stagiaire en vingt minutes.

Going back to Paris to see friends and deal with some PhD stuff.
One of my wife’s students was going to cat sit, but the cat isn’t doing great, so he’s coming with us and the student will be plant sitting instead.
Last night we got to the airport and the airline rejected the cat’s papers. It was 9pm and the vet was closed. So wife and kid went ahead to Paris and I went home with the cat. Trying again today.
Kitty is not happy, but he’ll be glad to be back in his country soon enough.

I feel like talking a little about hospice. My father-in-law died in August at the age of 97. He had cancer caused by exposure to art supplies (cadmium, turpentine, lead...). He was an extremely talented artist who didn’t have much success outside the USSR. He was in hospice for a few months but struggled to remember or admit to himself why. His social worker said he was in some ways one of her most difficult clients.

So far, they’ve had a brief interaction through the bedroom door, which is glass. Then Sparrow (4yo, foster cat in our apartment for a couple months) went to sleep on the couch. Charly (14yo, adopted in France 4 years ago, had been living with MIL for last year and a half) has retreated to under a bedside table, with occasional breaks for exploring the bedroom.

I get the impression that there is a minority of anti-fascists who believe that voting for a democratic party is worse than just allowing the overtly fascist party to win because it “legitimates” a system that is ultimately coercive, and the clearly coercive fascists will ultimately bring about their own downfall by driving the people to revolution. I think there were a few prominent people who literally said that after Bernie lost the 2016 primary.
