Conservatives now want to blame mass shootings on big pharma. That most shooters are on depression meds etc. I don't know that that's true and if it was, is the argument that society and these people would be overall better off without the drugs? I assume they'd never support banning people on these meds from having access to the guns. 2A etc.

When thinking about Elon and X, please also consider this. If a place for speech gets accepted as the most open and popular, then what's popular there will be claimed as speaking for the general public. Winning in the public square matters.

Today is the first day I thought that the #nostr #bluesky model might be a better way to do a decentralized social network. Because seemingly decent and honest people told me those protocols make using one profile for lots of different services much simpler and automatic than #ActivityPub. this lines up with the other link but mine has data up through last year. the spike seen here, showing actual deaths being much higher than expected based on previous years starting with COVID, is no longer happening. the expected line was not adjusted based on COVID years. reported deaths for last year are basically in line with the years before COVID.

if the second part was true, even with the evolution of COVID, shouldn't we be seeing just as much sickness and death or more as during the height of COVID because our damaged immune systems would be letting all infections fuck people up much more.
I take Humira for psoriasis and it's known to weaken immune systems while on it. because of that, I have to get a tuberculosis test regularly. if you were right, TB would spike.

I agree that people who are healthier etc do better against COVID and the flu etc, but you're not explaining the increase or now the decrease in deadliness, compared to the flu. what predicted all that and this is the normal pattern of new viruses, that the bad ones start out more dangerous but evolve (as predicted by natural selection) to live in more people but not kill as many of their hosts.

again, this was in NYC when it hit there hard. he is a very healthy 40 yo guy. blaming unhealthy lifestyles or lack of vitamins etc does not explain why it hit certain areas all over the world at certain times initially, then had a large effect in lots of places and has now faded in deadliness, compared to our normal experience with the flu etc. the masses did not all start taking better care of themselves. NYC wasn't less healthy then than Chicago etc.

much of NYC (and other places hit hard at the time) had a temporary vitamin deficiency at those times when COVID hit that they don't during normal flu seasons? or COVID doesn't exist and it's just the flu during these periods of peak vitamin deficiency in these certain areas? either way, that's amazing doc. and now everybody in the world has generally resolved these vitamin deficiencies up to the point that it's only as dangerous as the normal flu for most. whoa.

Politicians/elites have always been full of shit but the truth couldn't get out. What's changed is the internet and social media. We now know so much more. But most people don't get this.
MAGA thinks these problems are new and we can tear it down and go back to the good old days (that were always a lie). Libertarians think we'd be better with no institutions. The establishment just wants everybody to STFU. The woke believe in perfecting the human heart.
Realism just demands more democracy.

Embracing #LiberalValues means understanding that your side isn't good. Beyond just always being at least somewhat misinformed, every position you support will have unintended negative consequences. Recognizing this, you must listen to the people you disagree with and weigh their concerns against yours. Your goal might be righteous and achievable, but there was just so much you didn't consider because of your limited experience. And still, taking no action might be accepting a worse outcome.

The concern over the #blueskybridge is another example of #fediverse gentrification (that I support). Being here felt like a big #privacy improvement when it was small and obscure compared to the corporate platforms. But it's like the rest of the open web, public and scrape able. It's not behind a paywall.
The fedi is an awesome place and as more people figure that out, it will grow and change. But we need to have the big conversation about what this place is and what our different visions are.

using the smallest subset means my users won't see newsie.social posts boosted by people they follow. please. that's a clear sign the whole system needs to be reworked.
"hey journos, come to the fedi where servers using the bare minimum of moderation blocklists ensures the people here won't even see your posts. and oh yeah, there's no norm that people will be informed of this when they join a server."
please don't promote tier 0 etc if you want the fedi to grow.

addendum: tier 0 goes way beyond abusive servers. even the smallest subset includes newsie.social. that's ridiculous.
mstdn.social (a top 5 server) blocks your server for hate speech and images. c'mon. we need to find a better solution.

that makes a lot of sense. do you think moderation should be more public? I do. there's this tool for looking up blocks but it's clearly run by people that don't believe in dealing with harassment etc. we should all be using something like it imo.

I don't allow abusive accounts on my server so federating with my server will not cause your server problems just because other servers I federate with might. you can block them directly.

who an individual chooses to block largely is, but I'm talking about servers blocking or silencing other servers (sorry, will edit my reply above).
still, if everyone only watched Fox News (or any outlet) purely by choice, we'd have a problem at the society level. people would misunderstand the world and especially vote in a biased way. what we think changes how we act and this affects others. diversity of views matters, critical thinking education matters.

A state supreme court deciding that basically their religious understanding is more important than the US Constitution and SCOTUS support for gun rights. I can't support that as an atheist and a guy who thinks the rule of law matters even though I want less guns around and interpret 2A differently than Heller did, but how does a state's rights religious conservative argue with that? #AlohaSpirit
