the idea of not talking about politics or religion in polite company goes much further back than the founders. I think you're blaming the angry talking heads on cable TV for debasing the public conversation. I agree but don't forget Limbaugh etc. These people do what makes money. People here engage in a way that gets the most attention. It becomes "normal".
It's up to us to not favor it, to push against it, to model better behavior and to build structures with better incentives.
