@nprofile…pye9 @nprofile…jpw4 As a reminder, since hashtags can’t contain spaces, they are often multiple words smashed together. This creates problems for assistive technology such as screen readers unless each of the smashed together words has an initial capital letter, such as ThisIsAHashtag.

(And I say this as someone who enjoys being on a server with a 1000 character limit and will often take advantage of that.)

@nprofile…pye9 I don't know if that has been discussed before or not within Github, I do see it come up from time to time in general postings.
While the default codebase for Mastodon sets the limit at 500 characters, some server admins change that to a higher limit before compiling. So some Mastodon servers actually do have a higher limit.

@nprofile…j5lu I haven’t tried putting a link to a post with a post.
You copied that link, if you paste it into something else, such as a notepad app, what form would it take? And are you copying from the web interface or a third party client?
Here’s why I’m wondering if it is the copy function: When you go to the post via a browser, if you go to the post on the target server (and it is not the same as your own) you can’t reply, favorite, or boost because you don’t have an account there.
Maybe when you copied the link the copy was smart enough to know that and formatted the URL so that if you used it, it would go through your server and you could act on the post. (Of course, if you share the link, this is useless if the person you shared it with does not have an account on your server.)

I recognize that there are quite a few people who share that opinion. I also agree that we need methods for dealing with trolls and other abusive posts.
Admittedly, I am not convinced giving the OP the ability to remove all dissenting views, no matter how carefully and politely worded, does not carry its own dangers.

@nprofile…r80g ok, so you have shared your opinion that something is wrong, what is your suggestion to make it right? Are you suggesting that the visibility of a reply be the replier’s default setting? That Mastodon figure out and apply the OP’s follower list? If so, is that the OP’s current follower list, or the one that was in effect at the time of the original post? Or is there some other solution?

@nprofile…lpgr I don’t think Mastodon has that feature, but some clients may have implemented something like it. For instance, #IceCubes has implemented Tag Groups which are kind of like lists for hashtags.

Trump is convicted of fraud - specifically falsely stating the value of his properties in order to obtain better terms when borrowing money.
He is ordered to pay hundreds of millions of dollars. He can appeal, but must put up the value of the fine in order to appeal. In depositions, Trump has stated that he has more than 400 million in cash. Alternatively, the appeal money can be borrowed (a bond).
Trump tries to borrow the money, using his falsely valued properties as collateral. 30 major lenders turn him down.
Trump tells the courts he can’t put up the money, but claims he shouldn’t need to put up a bond because he’s good for it - he has all these high-value properties!

I’m holding out hope that as journalists take stock, they will see that the Fediverse already has advantages:
Referrals from monolithic social media were never that good and are getting worse. PBS left and found that there was essentially no negative impact.
People who have come here from other sites have repeatedly found that despite a much fewer number of followers here, identical posts here and elsewhere get more responses here and they tend to be of higher quality- exactly what a journalist needs.
The engagement algorithms at other sites actually punished quality and encouraged superficial quantity.
Finally, news orgs can have a fediverse presence built into their own web sites, similar to what WordPress did. I think they have not yet seen the tremendous advantage that would provide over monolithic sites.

I used the customer service portal to request that they add #Fediverse support to their software so that local governments can easily include that in their communications.

#[0] As I’ve said before, P52 could be both decentralized and based on ActivityPub - yet still be a walled garden.
What if P52 only talked to other P52 servers, (via the ActivityPub protocol) but they “decentralize” by putting an instance in each country (or specific country groups)?
If they did that it would still be a Meta controlled walled garden - but Meta would at least be able to try to claim compliance with European data privacy laws regarding data export, where they are still fighting legal battles today.
