We're 10 years past the death of Google Reader: a useful service that I miss. People: do you regularly read blogs anymore? How do you find out if they have been updated? Do you only check via social media links?

Academics, particularly in Europe: please PLEASE tell your advisees to check with someone before they submit a CV for an academic position with a photo on it. I know Europass has a photo place, but in some countries (or some institutions) CVs with photos must be automatically rejected to reduce bias in hiring. If the advert says "no photo", tell them not to submit a photo anyway! It could lead to an automatic reject.
Also, consider having a "no photo" rule in your hiring.

I think many applicants to funded PhD positions or Postdocs do not realise how important the cover/motivation letter is. Many I see are unfocused, perfunctory, and generic. Theybeven have multiple serious language errors...correcting grammar is easier than ever (have chatgpt do it!). The motivation letter is at least as important as the CV, if not more important. Maybe no one tells them? Do you tell your supervisees? #academicchatter @npub1t7d…h3ud

Anyone here affiliated with Rice University and up for helping me find some info about a stolen ancient Maya sculpture? I'm trying to get access to four articles that were published in the Houston Post in 1968 and 1969, I have the exact dates, but I can't seem to find any open online repository of the now-defunct Post. In 1994 Peru requested the return of five ancient objects that were offered for sale at Sotheby's. Peru believed that they were looted from the site of Sipán. US authorities returned three of the five objects to Peru and the two others were sold to private collectors and I haven't seen them since. Well until today! One of them is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. It was purchased by collector Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. and entered the museum collection at his death. So there you go.
