#Meta recently provided the best case study I'm aware of when they launched #Threads. Skipping the usual growth phase of regular people interacting with each other, they really went hard on making sure that all sorts of big name influencers were there. That was supposed to be the big draw. Turns out, that wasn't all that enticing.

I have seen a number of people saying things like "once the influencers get on the #fediverse everyone else will follow." I am not convinced. And maybe I'm wrong about this, but I feel like influencers don't draw nearly as many people as it seems. They influence the people who are there, sure. And they are sort of sticky - once they are influencing people those people may feel reluctant to leave (see Twitter). But I think most of the time influencers are opportunists more than they are leaders. And so most of them hold off until change is worth it to them, based on whatever metrics are important to them. If enough regular folk move, then the influencers will follow. Not the other way around.

Just taking a moment of silence for all of the people who have put so much effort into trying to communicate that the #Fediverse is so much bigger than just #Mastodon. Because that uphill battle is still far from over and now people (Mastodon users included!) are about to get hit with #Threads likely having 90% of the Fediverse user base once federation is (presumably) enabled. Just spent too much time reading peoples' takes on #Threads. A few good takes and a lot of bad takes. A lot of people completely unconcerned about #moderation of a single instance with millions of users by a company with a history of concerning moderation issues. Upon a few moments of research though, the people who are shrugging this off appear to nearly always be people who likely have quite a bit of privilege - the sort of people who will likely rarely (if ever) deal with the consequences of poor moderation themselves.

1) A significantly less moderated federated timeline is not the only drawback to removing defederation. What's a far bigger deal is that defederation also affects who can respond to your posts. And if an admin is allowing (or encouraging) their people to harass others, it is reasonable to cut off that admin's server.
2) We should not rely on minorities having to block harm on their own. Requiring them to block all harm by themselves means relying on them being constantly exposed to harm. As a community we should be trying to reduce that as much as possible.
3) There are enough "extreme cases" that if defederation was not in place I would pack up my bags and leave ActivityPub forever.
Is defederation a great solution? Not always. Are there problems with overuse? Yes. Would the Fediverse be worse without it? 100%

@npub1ufn…juc4 It gets weird because some projects try to play nice with each other and some don't. I believe Pixelfed in particular allows you to, for example, use the official Mastodon app to log into your Pixelfed account. But Mastodon does not allow you to use the Pixelfed app to log into your Mastodon account.
For me, I think the problem boils down to this: The fediverse marketing message often says "pick any server and you can use the fediverse from there!" but in reality these server implementations may speak ActivityPub but are not completely compatible with each other. If this in particular is what bothers you then I'm with you 100%. It is not as advertised.

The way things are generally set up right now is that accounts in those different "realms" are able to talk to each other, but that doesn't necessarily (and usually doesn't) mean that accounts in one realm can use another realm's service.
So, for example, I just found this random account on Pixelfed:

If you copy that url and put it in your Mastodon search bar, you can follow that Pixelfed account through your existing Mastodon account. You will then receive their posts, and (I believe) can comment, like, boost, etc. all from your Mastodon account.

You have an account on norrebro.space, which is a #Mastodon server. I have an account on techhub.social, which is a Mastodon server. By me sending this reply, my server is speaking to your server through #ActivityPub.
The fact that my account is hosted by a Mastodon server makes no difference in your ability to follow or interact with my posts, so long as both our servers understand ActivityPub.
There are other servers that also speak #ActivityPub. Someone with an account on calckey.social, which is a Calckey server, can also reply to this post because Calckey speaks ActivityPub. That you are on Mastodon and they are on Calckey is not important, because the servers speak the same language.
To use your example of realms, I think that rather than saying Mastodon realm or Calckey realm or whatever, it may be helpful to think more along the lines of each server being a realm. norrebro.space is the realm you live in. techhub.social is the realm I live in. They talk.

I also find it strange that if one is concerned about optics, which I certainly would be in their shoes, wouldn't one put in the bit of extra time to not release such a controversial TOS in the first place?

@npub1pqk…z65u I think for me this is a reminder that the average person sadly does not really think or care much about decentralization, power, privacy, all of it. The average person continues using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. despite all their problems. Occasionally the culture on one platform becomes something they don't like and they switch to another. But it's more about the culture of where they are going, not the details behind it. So they end up on new platforms with very similar deep issues.
That's what I see happening with many people with BlueSky. Most of them are not taking a deep look at protocols, privacy policies, capitalism, or moderation strategies. They are just unhappy with the place they are now, and looking for something that gives them the feelings they had before their current place became less fun.

Alright. I followed the hashtag #BlueSky to try and learn more about what's going on. But more than 95% of posts are either info-less hype or, more often, asking for invite codes. Time for me to unfollow.
I remain interested in understanding different approaches to protocol design. So far I have not been in agreement with BlueSky's overall direction. Maybe that'll change someday but for now I will be giving it less attention.

I just reported a post through Mastodon software, I think for the first time. I was surprised as I was filling out the report, that it showed me a bunch of other posts from this account and asked me to check if those are also problematic. They were.
As I was checking off post after post of rule-violating content, I couldn't help but think: Isn't this a potentially very harmful thing to put someone through? Like, I saw some dick pics. It wasn't my idea of a good time but I won't think about it again. But what if I was reporting something really really bad someone posted? Something that really upset me. And then the report flow says, "here, are any of the following posts also extremely upsetting and possibly harmful to you?"
I am not a #[0]. I am not an expert in #[1]. I am not an expert in trauma. I am not an expert in mental health. So maybe I'm really off base, but to me this does not feel like a good idea. Does anyone else feel this way?

#[0] Algorithms and search are both possible on ActivityPub. A number of AP services currently include full-text search.
The #[1] devs certainly seem averse to some of these things. I understand that's a turn-off for a number of people. From my perspective, the #[2] does have the potential to solve some of these problems, but (at least from what I've seen so far) I'm not willing to pay the price. If I were to state one hope I have for what the #[3] will do, it's that the competition encourages #[4] devs to look at feature requests that have long been ignored.

#[0] Sure, there are a lot of concerns about minor issues with an app in its beta phase that are being overblown. That always happens with new products, #[1] clients included. A lot of those minor issues will surely be resolved and don't maybe deserve too much attention.
But there is also a growing amount of informed, realistic posts about fundamental issues with #[2] and the #[3]. Issues that will likely not be resolved as they are intentional design choices baked in.

Step 1: Implement *actual* account portability. Posts, likes, and everything.
Step 2: Create an instance and call it something like welcome.mastodon.social.
Step 3: All new accounts through the app go to welcome.mastodon.social. Still the same super easy onboarding which is what the current change does help with.
Step 4: After a few months, once they have had time to understand how things work with different instances, *require* people to move from welcome.mastodon.social and provide a list of many options to do so.
This way people can get into things without the challenge of picking a server right away (I myself balked at the task 3 times before finally making my account). I think that easy onboarding is a reasonable goal. But over time my approach avoids having one massive instance which signing everyone straight up for mastodon.social and not providing actual account portability does.

#[0] #[1] #[2] Same thing with their non-chronological content recommendation algorithms as far as I can tell. Including no ability (that I have heard of) to say "I don't want that one particular nasty algorithm to see/recommend my stuff."

#[0] I think the large majority of people do not wish for anti-moderation technology. The few who do are enough to convince the rest of us that's not really what we want.
