The way things are generally set up right now is that accounts in those different "realms" are able to talk to each other, but that doesn't necessarily (and usually doesn't) mean that accounts in one realm can use another realm's service.
So, for example, I just found this random account on Pixelfed:
https://pixelfed.art/gigawatt1.21
If you copy that url and put it in your Mastodon search bar, you can follow that Pixelfed account through your existing Mastodon account. You will then receive their posts, and (I believe) can comment, like, boost, etc. all from your Mastodon account.
