I have a local egg guy that sells, but I regularly see his chickens eating roadkill dogs so it's got me a bit ick. Especially since we put antibiotics and other drugs in our pets that we don't really consider the half-life of or consumption, because we don't normally eat our dogs and cats.

Their ovaries can get cysts which some theorize is from prolonged heat cycles with no fertilization, idk if there have actually been many studies about it, we tend to not care as much about cats.
Cats are also induced ovulators, meaning that having sex knocks them out of the heat. Unlike dogs which only go into heat like twice yearly and for a week at a time, cats are going to be spending about half of their life in heat if not bred.

I worked at one shelter that adopted out unfixed animals with a free spay/neuter voucher, but about 30% never got their animal fixed and a quarter of that actually returned litters their animal had or returned the animal pregnant. Very frustrating.

What's your opinion on Open Adoptions?
Open adoption basically means that (almost) no one is denied to adopt an animal just from their answer on a form. Instead, the adoption coordinator would have a conversation with potential adopters to get a better feel for their situation. The idea was to simplify and humanize the adoption process.
Proponents of open adoption believe that owning a dog or cat should not be only for the well-to-do and the best of the best. They believe open adoption will not only allow regular families to adopt, but also help with finding the right fit.
Opponents argue that it will allow more people who shouldn't allow pets to adopt, or give people who are not financially stable even more of a money burden. There is also the fact that conversation based adoptions are going to take up more of the shelter employee's time.

I think that info is really disingenuous. Holstein is THE smashed and slammed cow for milk production. They are the most efficient cow producing 32,000 lbs of milk in a 305 day lactation, and the most numerous milking cow. They are commonly A1A1 or A1A2 as well. Thus, western cattle more commonly are going to have A1 milk.
Jersey, Guernsey, Normande, and Brown Swiss breeds have a higher percentage of A2 genes.
Part of the reason I am actually for A2 milk production is it helps support farmers of rare and endangered breeds of heritage cows, ever since Holstein became the standard for factory farming. It allows a milk market for other farmers to squeeze into.

Alright it is getting warmer out, I think it's time to go over a sensitive topic;
Outdoor & Indoor/Outdoor cats.
I guess I would like to preface this with saying, I am not totally and completely against outdoor cats. Shelters will often have a host of cats that don't do well inside, like cats that grew up outdoors or cats with incontinence or cats that are very easily over-stimulated, or semi-feral. Without people willing to keep them indoors/outdoors or outdoors only, they would be euthanized.
However, I do believe that if you're getting a new cat you should test out keeping it indoors first. And I believe kittens should absolutely be kept indoors. For a multitude of reasons;
1) Cat health. You already know cats get hit by cars, eaten by wild animals (or other pet animals), get into fights with other cats, and contract lethal and incurable diseases. But do you know at what rate? Because it probably seems like a far off issue if it didn't happen to you.
The National Traffic Safety Administration reports roughly 5.4 million cats are struck by cars a year. 97% of those cats do not survive the incident. There are probably many more that are not reported.
According to the Humane Society of America, out of the 22,000 cats that entered their system and had a non-live outcome, the most common reason was FeLV. Even among indoor pet cats, it is estimated 3-5% have FeLV; the rate for outdoor cats is suspected to be much higher. Cats with FeLV are not expected to live past 3y
Estimated 4% of cats in the US are suspected to have FIV - 75% of FIV+ cats are males. FIV positive cats usually present as normal, until the autoimmune system starts causing havoc or a normal URI turns into a deadly situation. After infection, the median lifespan is 5y.
There is no way to even guess how many cats are killed by dogs, cats, other domestics, wildlife, or people, because the vast majority of the time the body will not be found. However, if you look at lost animal statistics, one study found that 34% of cats went missing and was never found, with 2% being found dead. When entering shelters, cats have between 1.5-5% chance to be returned to owner.
Which brings me to 2) Wildlife. Not only are cats sometimes the sole or main factor for a species being endangered, they are sometimes the sole reason a species goes entirely extinct. It is estimated that cats will kill 1.3 - 4.0 billion birds and 6.3 - 22.3 billion mammals every year in the united states. Based on one study, cats were found to bring home less than a quarter of the animals they kill, and one study found they will only eat 30% of prey killed. Also cats get a variety of wonderful butt worms from eating wildlife.
Cats also fuck up our major flagstone species as well; They can spread their diseases to Bobcats and Catamounts and other big cats via indirect contact with saliva. Cat shit can spread toxoplasmosis into waterways and affect frogs, toads, turtles, reptiles, and even fish. Cats actually caused a toxo outbreak in some sealions in california, which kills it rapidly. Toxo can infect bears, deer, moose, bison, marine mammals, marsupials, small mammals, and even birds. They're fucking up primates in south America currently too.
And not as common, but domestic cats also hybridize with excessively rare wild cats like the european wildcat, which used to have populations in England, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, and France. They are NOT just feral domestic cats, they evolved parallel to the domestic cat, but IIRC I think they are more or less extinct and all hybridized.
The Humane Society of America reports that 93% of owners that let cats free roam will lose at least one cat outside. That rings true for me as I've lost both of my indoor/outdoor cats due to letting them free roam.
I get it if you already have an indoor/outdoor or outdoor only cat. Or you get a cat that's half wild, or doesn't use the litterbox, etc. I'd prefer a cat have a home than be euthanized at the pound. But I am asking that you maybe just consider keeping your next cat indoors, maybe with supervised outdoor access

A bit of a #throwbackthursday
The Bull Terrier, then (roughly 100 years ago) and now.
The Bull Terrier I lovingly call the 'first pit bull', as it was the first pit bull type dog to become a uniform dog breed. A hoodlum by the name of Hinks was trying to show his parole officer that he wasn't getting into any trouble by spending all of his time breeding dogs (this isn't a lie btw). The dogs he was breeding were called Bull & Terriers - they were not a breed, just a colloquial term for dogs that were Bulldog x Terrier crosses, which were used for dog fighting. He wanted a dog that would come out looking the same with each breeding, a uniform white with strong shoulders and muscled hindquarters, erect ears, tenacious and powerful. These dog were then used for dog fighting among many other things, as most of these blood sport dogs only did blood sport as their night job lol. They were considered the 'Gentleman's Dog'.
Over the years, the 'stop' (the angle between the eyes to the snout) was bred out. This was long after Hinks died, and he'd probably be turning in his grave. The angled head doesn't seem to cause any health problems, surprisingly. At least none that are known of. It is theorized they may cause dental issues, with concerns of crowding, but this has not been reproduced in any studies I found.
You can actually still find older versions of the Bull Terrier today - They are called the Hink's Terrier or Gull Terrier. They had to incorporate other breeds to get the stop back.

Honestly all things considered that dog is behaving very well despite full well knowing it's going to get hit again. I am surprised he even continued sitting pretty after the first barrage. I am also surprised the owner kept trying to make the dog do the trick after being hit and full well knowing the kid is coming back. It also puts the animal in a much more vulnerable position, making it much more uncomfortable than if it were on all fours. It's like fucking with a dog taking a dump, they are going to be more on the defensive.
Not to victim blame, but this is part of your 'it just snapped' shit.

It's going to depend a bit on his lifestyle. Pic related is a good table to go by. If you live somewhere besides the US and canada, then suggested vaccines may be very different.
Basically I suggest rabies vaccine and FVRCP (may also be called HCP, FCP) vaccine for all cats, and to keep those boostered as needed.
If your cat is over 16 weeks with no vaccine history, I would suggest 1 FVRCP and in 3-4 weeks, another FVRCP vaccine which will then be good for a year. But some vets will just do 1 for an adult with no history. FVRCP protects against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (Herpes infection), Calici Virus (URI that is hard to treat because the infection causes mouth ulcers making cats not eat, and the best antibiotics for it can't be given on empty stomach), and Panleukopenia (AKA Feline Distemper, and the father virus of Canine Parvovirus). All of these diseases are highly contagious and deadly.
If the cat is under 1 year old, I highly suggest FeLV vaccine regardless of lifestyle. FeLV is feline leukemia, there is no cure, it is terminal, and it is transmissible through contact with saliva. After that initial vaccine, I usually only suggest getting the FeLV vaccine again if the cat goes outdoors, you have cats in your house that may be FeLV+ (like fostering kittens/cats), or maybe you work in an animal shelter/veterinary medicine type of setting.
There is an FIV vaccine - FIV is basically Feline AIDS but it is transmitted via saliva to blood, so mostly fighting and mating. It is also terminal and no cure. It is incredibly common in intact male outdoor cats, because they fight a lot. However, vets usually DO NOT recommend the FIV vaccine due to crappy efficiency and side effects. I wouldn't recommend it, either.
Over-vaccination doesn't generally happen as much with cats because we don't care about cats enough. This tends to happen more with canines and the DHPP/Lepto combo vaccine.
Nowadays vets will kinda hold your hand through all this and show you what they offer. Remember boosters actually do matter, your animal's immune system will forget it after a while. Let me know if you have any questions though! Good luck with your kitty

Oh I meant to also say, coming from a position of professionalism, people will take our word as fact. So saying something like 'I would never own a snake, they're dangerous' can be taken like bible text. Many clients won't see your hatred of cats as an opinion, but as a reasonable justification. Unpopular opinion time: I don't think you can work in vet med if you hate *ANY* pet.
I used to think that there were so many different avenues in vet med that nearly anyone could find their niche. There are exotic vets, farm vets, lab positions, sales reps, etc etc.
I have heard techs that disliked certain dogs going into large animal practice (think horses, cows, etc). Issue is, these farmers tend to not only have dogs, but have them loose. She got scared of the farmer's working dog and slammed it in the head.
I have also had a friend that worked cat only, tell many clients that they should get rid of their dogs.
Most recently, it was a bird-only vet tech that insinuated an owner should kill or get rid of their pet snake.
As vet techs, we are ambassadors not just for our patients but for all animals, and for our clients. We can't be putting such a huge fucking bias in the way of our practice. I think hating something, wanting animals banned, wanting something to not exist, doesn't just make it hard to put opinions aside for your client; I genuinely think it makes it impossible. And I think vet techs that DO hate any pet, needs to throw in the fucking towel because they do more harm than good.

3 year old sphinx cat found in the Ciudad Juarez prison in Mexico, has ink tattoos identical on both sides of the body.
One of the tattoos, which says 'Made in Mexico', is linked to the "Los Mexicles," a street gang linked to the notorious Sinaloa Cartel. At least one tattoo they were able to tell was administered with no analgesic - they believe multiple people held the cat down while one did the tattooing. Despite this, the cat is very friendly and has no tattoo related infection. The cat was found with mild ear and eye infection, and with open sores especially on paw pads.
It's alleged owner, Ernesto Alfredo Pinon de la Cruz, was shot and killed January 5th 2023 after attempting to escape prison. After which, gang members in the prison took up caring for the feline.
After the prison break, officials raided the prison to find 21 rifles, 900 bullet rounds, bulletproof vests, alcohol, and drugs hidden in the jail. Among those, they also found 7 dogs, 1 cat, and a mechanical bull. The sphinx, now named Kilo according to some sources, could not be returned to next of kin due to the abuse and neglect. After investigation, the cat was adopted out to an anonymous person.

I am not exaggerating when I say it's a good week when I only see 1 dead dog on the highway near us. These boomers and mini boomers call themselves dog lovers. Yet they leave their dogs outside, let them run loose to get shot or ran over or kill other dogs.
There aren't any leash laws, there's not even a pound or animal control here. The worst part is if I did the right thing (take them in), it would also be the illegal thing.

poodles aren't necessarily structurally unsound like french bulldogs and pugs are. You can breed healthy poodles if you're doing it right.
My main concern with doodle breeders are the ethics behind breeding them. There is a lot that *should* go into dog breeding to ensure that the breeder isn't simply adding to the overpopulation of dogs in animal shelters, creating unhealthy dogs that will suffer and cause their family grief, or create an unstable animal that will suffer and cause others to suffer as well.
The issue with doodle breeders is that they are breeding for a fad. These 'breeds' are not actual breeds; you can even see just physically how much the dogs can differ from one another. Just like there is no physical standard, there is no behavior standard either. There is no breeding for the betterment of the breed as there is no standard; they are quite literally breeding to pump out dogs. Check out how many doodle rescues and how many poodle crosses are currently in shelters. There is no push to try to make these dogs stable and predictable.
It is also apparent how little is thought of in breeding when taking into account the types of breeds getting mashed together. Some of these animals having very clashing temperaments which can create neurotic dogs. Many of these breeds have polar hair types, which makes grooming excessively difficult and undercoat matting is a huge problem with many individuals.
Then there's the health aspect; doodle breeders only seem to test for health issues seen in both breeds (IF they are a rare doodle breeder that health tests at all). Really, health tests need to be done on each breed for most issues as many of these hereditary health issues have several genetic markers or are not dominant. And these health tests often need to be done yearly, not just once while the animal is young and healthy.
Ultimately it's a cash grab. These people are scamming pet owners to pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars on these dogs that they barely put an ounce of money, thought, or effort into. They don't care what they are creating, they often don't care who is adopting from them, as long as they can make money. I believe if a breeder is going to make a conscious decision to breed an animal, being the sole reason for the animal's existence should make the breeder responsible for giving that creature the best potential outcome it can have.

It's pretty cute. The idea of it is to get the puppies adopted, and raise awareness for shelter animals.

Irish Doodle (Irish Setter /Poodle) hurts my soul. Nothing was added to the animal's temperament, nothing added to their health, you just took a beautiful Irish Setter and made it look exactly like a red golden doodle. Like most poodle mixes, you'd never be able to tell these were half irish setter. Irish Setters aren't all that easy to come by, either.
When ripping pics online, I really do try to look for 'pet' pictures, ie this was a photo some person took of their pet Irish Doodle. I try NOT to get pictures from breeders or stud services, etc. Just so I can give y'all an idea of what these dogs will actually look like in a normal family home, because breeders are going to be getting there dogs professionally groomed and photographed to look their best. I have the hardest time finding normal pet photos of adult doodles, so much that most of my pics are indeed breeder pics.

I've got a game changing plan
Everyone is pissed about the prison system right? Some people think it's too harsh others think it's too light and we don't have the funds to keep all the criminals in there anyway.
So how about we make the length of prison stay for crimes wayyy shorter, but cut amenities by a ton. Make the duration shorter to appease the families, and make their lives a living hell to appease the victims. With the idea that if they reoffend, they better turn the gun on themselves because they may not survive prison round 2.
Can cut corners even further by not having climate control, feed every other day, only one pear of clothes, etc.
The really heinous criminals can just be left to the crowd to save money on execution.
Just vote me into office already.

I actually dealt with an AKC breeder today that actually won ribbons at some semi larger dog shows.
It was awful. He was surrendering a bunch of dogs to the shelter that wouldn't sell. Was bitching to me that they normally go for a few grand, and that he kept lowering the price and still couldn't sell them for just $300. The dogs were various ages between 12 and 18 months, and never named them. Said "they just sit in the backyard, losing value" like they're some junk cars.
Really making me wonder how many of these 'reputable breeders' are really reputable.

I don't agree with their statement; firstly, making fun of how someone pronounces BIPOC is not inflammatory towards BIPOC, it would be inflammatory towards the person pronouncing it. And to try to destroy a few individual's careers (It would destroy their animal welfare career since it is such a small industry) over the assumingly incorrect pronunciation of the BIPOC acronym is alienating to the BIPOC community. If it is not an egregious racist act, they should instead be met with calm but firm education to give them room to grow. Not destroy their passion and give BIPOC the reason their dream career has been dashed. That's just shooting yourself in the fucking foot.

So there has been a lot of hullabaloo about racism surrounding the animal welfare industry. It has me thinking about how true it is, and why that may be.
I looked into it a bit. 84% of the animal welfare industry is specifically non-Hispanic white, and less than 1% is black. Now unlike things like pilots and surgeons, which are also primarily white but usually have other huge barriers (college, money, etc), the majority of the animal welfare field are entry level jobs, meaning no prior work experience required, no higher education required, etc.
So the reason I mention the barriers is because white people are going to be more likely than other races (in the US) to have access to a college education and money to go to college, and even have an easier time landing a job to get work experience for another job.
Being an animal care tech in an animal shelter does not require ANY college education, usually doesn't require prior experience either. So there is no economic barriers, which has me confused on why there's so few BIPOC working in shelters.
Then there is addressing the racism in animal welfare. I personally think it is cyclical. You tend to get an 'us vs them' dichotomy in animal shelters - it is a well known phenomenon, a defense mechanism for the secondary trauma seen in the industry. If most of the 'Us' is going to be white, then the 'Them' that will be more vilified will be non-white (not to say whites are not also vilified, but I think that BIPOC is going to more likely be vilified, or more strongly vilified). If there is not enough BIPOC allies in the animal welfare industry, then the 'Us' will always be primarily white and the 'Them' is going to include BIPOC. In my opinion.
Anecdotally I definitely notice racism in animal welfare, from the blatant racism to minor racists beliefs. Even from the few BIPOC people in the industry. And having worked in primarily non-white areas, the shelters in those areas still mainly saw white clients.
Not sure how the cycle could even be broken to see if my theory is right.
