I can take a crack at it.
The thing you're responding to, how bitcoin blocks are a currently ghost town but Monero blocks are not, already refutes the first point made in the video, that bitcoins block size per market cap is bigger and so if Monero were to scale to that size it would have unmanageably large blocks. If that were true bitcoin would at the very least have full blocks right now. As rotten said, rubbish, and I'm surprised you didn't see it before linking us to the video. Using market cap as a heuristic for adoption is an incorrect premise.
(We have all seen this video before BTW, it's a go to gotcha and it has been torn to shreds many times before, "deboonked" you might say, you can find many other responses to it on nostr, on reddit especially, probably everywhere else that there is a presence of the Monero community)
There's no such thing as a free lunch... Nobody ever claimed there was a free lunch. We knowingly make the trade off: bigger transactions for fungibility and private finances. We know the cost of privacy and embrace it because it is a must have feature of money. But framing it that way assumes bitcoin is already perfect, that improvement can't be had over it without losing something. This is not true. I think bigger transactions in exchange for complete privacy is a worthwhile trade off, therefore I think I'm getting more than I'm giving, therefore I think I'm getting something for free, the marginal benefit over the marginal cost. That's nice.
Hasn't been that successful... Again, market cap is a poor heuristic for utility and adoption. Define success. I define it as peer to been electronic cash, the title of the bitcoin whitepaper.
Mining, this is all theory. Some of the arguments about ASICs vs RandomX have merit. But the idea that specialized CPUs will be made is ridiculous. They won't be specialized, they'll just be more powerful general purpose CPUs. The idea that the ability to attack Monero is easier than bitcoin because they're CPUs is also is not entirely ridiculous, but it's not well understood. The fundamental measure of attack ability is hash rate, and right now Bitcoin can be attacked with 10% of the yearly DoD budget, one company has a monopoly on production of bitcoin mining hardware and could attack the network whenever it chooses. It's easier to rent CPUs than ASICs, it's even easier to lean on a single company that produces over half the hash rate. "Bitcoin can just change it's mining algorithm" so can Monero, and in fact it has, something bitcoin probably couldn't do because it can't find consensus to change anything.
You can't call bigger transactions "blockchain bloat" when they're made that way on purpose for a reason. They're not bloat by definition, they're more useful to users. They're just bigger.

It was a fresh install, nothing but the DEs applications installed. I don't know, I used to use it right after Gnome 3 came out and for a while longer because I couldn't beat it. I used XFCE for years after that so I don't know what development happened in it, but when I tried it it was the same as it had always been interface wise, but a little bugger and heavy on the resources.

Yeah I've dealt with sound issues before, particularly with pulseaudio, and fixed them. Pipewire is pretty new, so I'm not all that familiar with it, something fucky is going on with my setup somewhere and I can't figure it out. I've tried checking for sound on the onboard mic on 2 separate installations on the same machine with 3 different kernels, tried changing drivers, tried every silly thing I've found on reddit and the forums, nothing. I'm extremely pissed off lol I just want to record some damn guitar playing!

I'm dealing with my own issue right now, no input from the built in mic or plugged in headset mic on my laptop. At first it wasnt even recognizing my headset mic at all, but I got it to recognize it, but no sound. Ripping what little hair I have left out of my head trying to get it working.

You're talking about a >95% guarantee of a 2% average monthly return on something indefinitely, on capital that isn't producing economic output. On top of that, it's just chatgpt telling you that. I'm just pointing out that one ought to be highly skeptical of such a claim.
At best, bitcoin can preserve purchasing power indefinitely. In the short term, it can siphon wealth off late adopters as hard money, or give the older a cantillion effect like benefit in times of population growth. It cannot (and nothing short of a fleet of robots that make you everything you desire and maintain their own fleet can) preserve it's purchasing power and give you an additional return, especially not of 24% annually (ignoring compounding for simplicity) indefinitely.

Termux + qalc + heliboard are a hell of a combination for a very powerful on the go calculator.
With heliboard, you can customize keyboard layouts pretty extensively. Its not quite universally customizable, but close. You can add all symbols you might need to your keyboard symbols and even popups in your numpad. So you can have Π and Σ to do recursive production and summation right inside qalc from a numpad type keyboard on your phone, for example. Or even more fun, save "ln(" or "log(" as popups in your numpad also if you use them a lot.
There are a lot of functions and variables in qalc that are saved as sequences of roman alphabet letters, because it's designed for a keyboard of course, and not for someone with those special symbols on a button in front of them. So you'll often need to just use the keyboard anyway instead of the numpad. But if you use a few functions pretty often, adding them to your numpad as popups can be very powerful.

There was a video of a nostr presentation the other day that I don't feel like digging up, where a point made is that you're not going to compete with Instagram by being Instagram. It's network effects that must be overcome, not UI supremacy. The UX for most of those apps sucks. Do you want a better UX? Sure, but that's not what is going to beat them. They're dead if and only if people can't reach a wide range of other people using them.
The other side of the statement that you don't compete with them on their own playing field is, you have to create something novel. Some new way of doing something. Some irresistible change in a paradigm that people would rather use nostr than silos. There's a lot there we have going for us. The big ones are censorship resistance and cross compatibility.
One thing I love about nostr, it is easier for me to create a "blog", soap box, online presence than building and hosting a website, and it is easier than even setting up a twitter or Facebook account. I can just generate a key, pick a few relays and start saying things. I can keep track of my "blog" either having a separate key for that, or pinning those sort of canonical posts. The only thing that's harder I guess is securing and keeping track of keys, but no harder than securing and keeping track of secure passwords, so the only reason it's harder is because people aren't using secure passwords, which means as someone who already does that, it's not harder at all.

I too have abandoned shitposting circles. I just got tired of it. It's fun for a while. Now I value SNR; if I can't see everything from everyone I follow in 20 minutes every 24 hours in following too many people. If you fill up my feed with low effort musings or quips, not following. If you're all boosts and they're not interesting, not following. My follow count is low, because I don't follow for social clout, I follow because I want to see what you say. That is something that real people actually want, they don't want to feel like they're shouting into a void, they want followers to follow them because they want to hear what they say.
I don't post often. That's because I don't want to fill your feed with noise. If you actually have a manageable follow count, every now and then you'll see what I say and you can be rest assured it isn't garbage. It might not interest you, but it isn't noise. If you don't have a manageable follow count, following anyone is a waste of time, what you see is determined by what time you open your client app.

Well, that was short lived. It's still pretty green, and needs some more development to be day to day use able. Too many bugs and missing features. I'd like to continue using it but as of right now I couldn't go an hour without running into some dealbreaking issues.
1) it freezes up sometimes and refuses to load, or won't load past a certain place and there's no way to get it to continue pulling events. I think it queues up requests and something fails and it just stops the process and won't request anything after that.
2) it malforms ln invoices.
3) no bookmarks, though the roadmap shows that completed.
4) it doesn't show someone's followers unless that someone is you. You can strangely "sign in" read only as other users and see their followers that way. Very bizarre feature. This breaks the ability to manually network. Also, if you do that, it saves those accounts you signed in as to your accounts.

That's not how it goes either. Have you ever been hassled by the police? I have, numerous times.
Generally, in my experience, just being pleasant and giving them the documents they request is all it takes. They can be a little skittish pretty often, because ofc they're cowards. But my general rule is, just be a normal person with them, give them the documents you're required to, answer questions without telling them your personal business, and refuse a search regardless of whether you have anything to hide. "I always exercise my right on principle, you have no reason to warrant a search, I'll be answering no more questions now" if asked why. That's basically it. If they're asking for a search it means they don't have any probable cause, anything they try to get you to say after that is to justify a search without your permission. If they search without either, nothing they find can be used against you in court.
I have a procedure when I get in my car. My wallet and whatever documentation are in plain view and separate from everything else. It's a part of what I do before I start moving, like putting on a seatbelt. Not in my pocket, not in a console or glove box, right out there so they can see what I'm reaching for and so that they don't get an opportunity to shine a flashlight in my private spaces in my car. I never travel with anything illegal that I have to worry about them spotting, but I don't want them to pretend they saw something as an excuse to rummage through my stuff. I've heard of them claiming a wire nut was a syringe cap and things like that. The less opportunity you give them to say they saw something suspicious the better. Being prepared before an encounter happens is better than invoking your rights while they're being violated or worse, giving it to them because you have a joint or whatever in your ashtray.

I'm pretty certain. If you know how it works, it's just a bunch of feedback loops emulated on a processor. In my view it is a novel form of compression that is poorly understood. How they work is they just statistically spit out the next token likely to follow the last one. It's monkeys on a typewriter.
I am of the opinion that minds are just like bodies in the sense that their form is unique to their function, and that they evolve. Evolved forms emerge spontaneously with the environment as it changes. They're feedback loops within feedback loops within feedback loops. Spontaneously, they exist with all their environmental concerns taken into account. This cannot be true of created forms, they'll always have a form that fits a purpose, and therefore are incapable of spontaneous autonomy within any real environment.
I don't think an artificial intelligence is able to be made that is truly a mind, but more strongly, I don't think it's possible emulating a mind on silicon. If a mind can be created, I think the computation has to happen on the "bare metal" of the universe, a computer that doesn't isolate a computing environment inside a machine, but rather, performs computations in an analog sort of way, in the world and not isolated from it. Even then, I'm skeptical it can be done and right now am pretty convinced that minds must emerge in the universe spontaneously.

The way these models work I don't think they're architecturally capable of meta thought, or thought at all really but if we call what they're doing "thought". But I'll say, I'm not a fan of follower count chasers. I don't have a ton and I don't need a ton. I understand most of them are bots or dead accounts. I don't want people to follow me unless they care about what I have to say.
I've found, the only way to have a good, meaningful experience on any social media is to poke around for a while, find some people that you really like what they have to say and would like to talk to them, start doing that, then follow the social graph a little and continue to do that. If you also have interesting things to say people will follow you, and eventually it snowballs. I think, out of all social media I've tried, nostr-as-mocroblogging has been the most rewarding. Meaningful conversations, consequential ones, thoughtful ones that I learn something from, genuine people, an all round great place.

I also rarely talk politics, but I'll say, the R base you're looking for doesn't exist anymore in any meaningful number. Rick Perry for example, old guard Republican, ex governor of Texas, lieutenant governor for George W Bush, is a medicinal psychedelic activist now.
Most politicians are phony, and will pander to whatever they think will get them reelected. This means, if the base moves towards Trump, more libertarian leaning or whatever, the politicians will move that way to keep power. My idea would be to post a long form kind 30023 https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/23.md at a separate "mister-monster's blog" public key, that way followers who just want to read your blog don't have to see your day to day social discussions. Then I'd boost it with this key. You have an actual blog and I wouldnt, so you'd maybe want to include a link to the blog post URL at the bottom of the note.
I'd probably write a CLI up that reads a text file and publishes as a note. You'd probably prefer to write something up (or find something that already exists) that subscribes to your blog and when a new post appears, publishes a nostr note. That way the process is automatic, either you run a command or it happens by itself somewhere once you publish a new blog post to your blog.
For boosting with your "main" key, if you decide to go the separate key route, I'm sure there's an auto boost bot out there, but that shouldn't be hard to write either. I'm sure there's another way with delegated signing or something like that, but that's all overkill to me. I like to KISS, and 2 separate keys, one for my social and one for my long form, are perfectly fine to me.

Hey man, question, have you considered publishing your blog as a long form nostr feed? I don't know your priorities with it, but I've considered generating an npub just for a blog and boosting the messages here, because 1) censorship resistance, 2) no hosting required. You could even include a link to the http page in it for people to click through if you wanted to do both.
Another option if you want your content only available through your site would be a bot that shares it on nostr automatically, like RSS but on nostr. I think several already exist, not sure.

So I'm glad to say, my ongoing 5 XMR bet with @nprofile…7e25 that Trump would pardon or commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht within 100 days of takong office is over, and I have won, and I'm glad. Not just because I won. It's nice to win, to have your worldview validated by reality, to get some money for something you expected to be true. I'm also happy that I made an internet friend along the way, we have had some fun discussions on here.
Primarily, I'm happy that the ongoing injustice against Ross and his family is finally coming to an end, and he can hopefully get back to life and enjoy it.
I don't know what I will do with the money. He said if he won he would donate it to Ross' family, but now that Ross is going to be free, that doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe I'll donate it to some FOSS project or put in a bounty for something I want done. Maybe I'll spend it on a DNM (just kidding of course, but that would be a fitting use for it).

Finally checking out 0xchat right now, and while the UI is a little too "modern" which almost always means bland and clunky, it appears to work pretty well. Supports bunker protocol for remote signers, which is wonderful. I'm going to dig into the details and nips, I'm pretty sure there's no forward secrecy if I understand how encrypted messaging over nostr works, but seems useable for talking to nostr people casually. Spirits taste like whatever you do to them during or after distillation, and nothing like what they're made of initially. Grape wine is not superior to other wine, it's just more profitable. All alcohol marketing is about lifestyle depictions, never about what youre buying, because alcohol exists to get you fucked up and that's not an effective differentiator for your product. You can make it taste different, less harsh, more bite, sweeter, like wood esters, like honey, whatever, but anyone can copy you. But what they can't copy is your brand, so the brand must be sold instead of the product.

Anything that enables you to make your imagination a reality is power. Usually it's framed as power to get others to do what you want, but it doesn't only mean that.
That's why I continue to espouse natural rights. I seek power only over myself, not others, at least not coercively. Maintaining that narrative ensures that all men can live in such a world, protected from predators. There's a reason it's the most successful cultural idea every created, and that is that it is a protocol that, for those who follow it, enable them to go their own way when they need to and ban together when they must. One value: leave us alone. Very powerful on it's own.

I've come to this recently too. It's hard to come to, but to understand the world you have to face that your ideology might not be "the" reality.
I "believe" in natural rights, as in, I'll enforce them for myself, period. They're a fantastic civic structure for social organization at a large scale. You can reason about how you're born with them, that you can articulate your possession of them means you possess them, it's all great, I stand by them. But they're a civic structure, they don't occur naturally.
What occurs naturally is power dynamics. The flow of power, the law of conservation of power. It is emergent, a trait of life, but it is real and natural.

If you're partial to arch, I like endeavorOS. Pre built desktop, minimal fuss. I'm partial to Wayland and use labwc and sfwbar for a quick easy setup that just works for when I want to use a normal cascading window system. I usually use a tiling wm but if you're not into that those two work great together. Login/display manager, ly works good. It's a simple shell based TUI login manager. This approach requires a little set up of course.
If you just want a DE with all the software already installed and virtually no setup, KDE works good on Wayland, but bugs. There are always a couple little things with KDE. If you don't care about Wayland I've always liked lxde. Simple and no fuss. Used to use xfce but it's not very performant anymore and has a bloated codebase now.
Debian apt get dependency issues are going to affect any distro based on Debian, which is why I won't use them. I'd say Linux mint, easy and all that, but you'll get problems with apt because you always do.

Building your own dwelling is something everyone in the world except kings in castles experienced in their lives at least once. It is a core part of being human, like making and wielding tools, decorating our bodies and improvising language, a creative activity that is part of our form and being. And nobody does it anymore. We pay some guys to slap together some generic structure according to laws. We are all missing something fundamental. I intend to experience it and understand the feelings, of having to get up and do the work, of wishing it was done, of finally having it, of knowing every detail and having things the way I want them, of decorating and improving the little things as I live inside.

That's what I'm going to do. Not a tent, an RV. Cob, where I'm going to settle is not a viable material option. That kind of stuff you want to build from local materials, local materials are usually more durable for the climate. I too fantasize about cob lol but wouldn't want to truck the materials in from elsewhere or whatever.

Not really a "shitcoin", a coin has to be actual shit to be a shitcoin. Fortunately for shitcoins there's a lot more of them than real deal coins, so if someone's a shitvoiner there's plenty to choose from. If you're only into real deal stuff there's like 5 max.
Governments will never allow it... We aren't really concerned about that lol. If it proliferates, good, if not, I can still use it. It exists, it is useful, that's really all it takes, that and time.

Oh I didn't think about this... A bank can't force you to "deposit at an ATM". A counterparty can force close your channel. So even lightning is jot as good as cash.
Also cash has no payment processors. Lightning doesn't have to have them, but in practicality almost always does, in the form of large liquidity providers offering channels as a service.

So, LEDs don't flicker, they're diodes, direct current flows in one direction and they light up. What's causing them to flicker is the electronics in the "bulb" which converts 110v AC to DC. You can wire in 12 or 24 volt lines in your house, especially if you're doing off grid solar it is very easy, and you won't have flicker. Imagine installing a 12 volt system with solar and batteries, to an inverter for 110, and wiring your whole house up, lights and all, with 110. Asanine. You don't need 110v AC for lighting, not even with incandescent lights. You need it for a refrigerator, that's about it.
Some LED controllers will flicker for dimming, some don't, get ones that don't do that. As for blue light, get decent LEDs that have a better color profile, and turn down the white/blue to a more amber hue.
You can actually get exactly the color profile you like from RGB LEDs, you just have to not buy cheap LEDs. All bulbs that screw into a 110 socket suck.
Light after the sun goes down is unnatural. The goal here is to do something unnatural. Your lighting doesn't need to be identical to the sun, because it's night time. But you can get it pretty close with LEDs. And they last forever, and you can adjust to exactly the color profile you like, and they're dirt cheap to buy and to run, pennies a piece and pennies a month. Again, as long as you actually wire your house up for LEDs and not for silly sockets you're going to need a compatibility layer to actually run LEDs in built into every light, it's a no brainer, low voltage DC and LED strips is the way to go.

You can't track cash as it changes hands. You can track which bank ATM it left and which one it wound up in, that's about it. Cash can't be tracked from one hand to another using serial numbers.
