Ah, they replied.
Maybe it was a language barrier thing?
I get the impression that individual was attempting to communicate that they should have checked open PRs before updating ZMap.
Yet the way it was communicated, gave me the completely opposite meaning.
I am still confused, on a number of levels. Not the least of which: why are they making changes to MacPorts without following the standard Pull Request procedures? But whatever, I have other things to do today. I'm going to chalk it up to English is not their first language and move on with my life.

MacPorts' ZMap has been updated!
Though, the person who committed the change, claims that I should have checked PRs since I guess they had contributed such changes before I submitted mine?
Fine, whatever, I am more than happy when others contribute which is why I put openmaintainer in any Portfile where I am a maintainer.
But I did search open PRs.
I've also searched closed PRs.
There was no PR submitted to update ZMap to 4.3.2 aside from the one I submitted.
I get the impression the individual is a weird who wants to take credit?
It isn't the first time they've done things that are outside of standard MacPorts operating procedure with regards to ZMap either.
I'm not even sure how to handle that. It's fucking weird.
Don't get me wrong, as a person with an ops background, I have made changes without formalities for decades in my career.
But that was for my job. Typically when being alerted to something breaking in prod which needed immediate fixing.
Not within a collaborative open source project.

Since I am a co-founder of @nprofile…8qg7 which is a SF based hackerspace, the "No hackerspace" is factually incorrect. Albeit, I dunno about Tuscon, but https://hackerspaces.org/ exists to help folks keep track of where such things may also exist geographically.
There are lots of community spaces, libraries are popular in the USA for example. Parks aren't as nice as what I found in Berlin generally speaking (and Noisebridge is no where near as cool as C-Base which was a major inspiration) but there are various other community spaces, contingent upon the community: which maybe you aren't a part of as you are traveling which is a challenge.
Traveling itself, especially due to the GM Streetcar conspiracy (further reading here on that cautionary tale here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_conspiracy) is unfortunately largely by car in most states in the USA in the 21st century. It wasn't always that way; but oligopoly hegemonic assholes have done wonders on destroying what little decent infrastructure existed and are trying to do the same in many other nation states even now.
You seem (between this and the yolo stuff) to be, from my vantage, really focused on "convenience" or lack thereof?
As an American, I find that confusing. Almost everything here is the opposite of truly convenient. Also this concept of "finish work" is meaningless to me insomuch as I was forced to work (unpaid) as a minor and most jobs I have had as an adult have had me "on call" 24x7 for years. There is no "finish" work, there is always more work tomorrow. Retirement and pensions are something something rich privileged people have in theory I guess? I wouldn't know anything about that in my existence in this incarnation in the USA.
I expect to I will still be forced to work even after I am murdered, like Robocop (meme attached for reference).
Maybe you've heard the expression: "Land of the free, home of the brave" with reference to the United States of America?

You having yolo-foo is very different from upstream catering to an individual's yolo whims.
I'm awfully sorry that you need to "talk" SSLv3.
Your needs, seem as if they're probably not for the good of the many; but having local branches for individual whatever is hardly uncommon.
Advocating that an upstream project can or should cater to every such thing is another ball of wax entirely.
Moreover, the entire concept of YOLO, at least to me; seems to fly in the face of a lot of others' lived experiences (meme attached for educational/entertainment purposes).

Just saw Porcelain War, which is about some artists, at least one of whom is also training civilians to use firearms as well as part of a special forces unit which uses drones, in the Ukraine.
It's charming at times, horrific at others has some beautiful animation, a fantastic musical backing (from DakhaBrakha; which to my ears, at least has some Tuvan Throat singing similarities on occasion) and I guess it was mostly made by the people who are in the film itself?
If you watch the trailer, it will give you a decent overview of what you are about to get yourself into I think?
I hate films that glorify violence; something all too common in this day and age.
Thankfully, Porcelain War, glorifies art and striving despite overwhelming odds to the contrary. Weapons and violence, while present, are used with disdain. Whereas the soulful smiles of those who would rather not be fighting are bright when they encounter even a tiny porcelain figurine or some custom painted drone.
What a stark contrast from the awful movies I watched yesterday.
Porcelain War is not screening very widely, this was the last night it was playing at the theater in San Rafael for example, but it was a packed house and the audience applauded at the end and seemed as if they all sat through the end credits. Something extremely rare for cinematic experiences.
A difficult, but worthwhile watch.

Yeah, the worst thing as a registered California voter last year, from my vantage, was that Prop 6 did not pass, which would have closed the Constitutional loop hole (at least within the state of California) which sanctions carceral slavery.
I had imagined, that perhaps California was full of voters who were not as heinous as they clearly are.

I may still be in debt.
I may still be homeless/sleeping in my car (which is increasingly less road worthy, though I hit a new 50 mile MPG record on Monday! 69.8MPG average over 50 miles, whoa!).
But, at least I submitted some pull requests to some libre/free open source software that I think makes the world a less insufferable place, and submitted a story to undeadly.org about one of those projects too (which I'll leave in the queue for at least another editor to give it a once over before publishing, as we are apt to do in that collaborative way).
I could write more about the car stuff (TL;DR I drove a LOT on Monday and test drove another car and stuff) but no doubt that saga will have more nightmarish stuff to write about later and I am exhausted.
I also saw a few films on Tuesday in the theater and I won't waste much space on them here and now but when the best of the three was maybe the one titled Rifle Club (and I hate guns)? sigh I dunno, not a good day for movies.
The other two were: Marco (Malayalam with English Subtitles) which just felt way too long, but at least mercifully had an intermission. Still, long, slow pacing, way too much violence and smoking and alcohol (seems to be a common theme in a lot of movies from India that get screened locally for some reason) and worst of all: hints of a potential sequel if you stayed past the end credits. It sincerely does not need a sequel.
And UI (Kannada with English Subtitles). The UI stands for "Universal Intelligence" apparently? It had a lot of "AI" VFX during the opening credits which got me off on the wrong foot for sure. In theory it had sort of a post modern narrative about movies and commentary on a population that has been deceived by politicians stealing all their money and power from the people, who if they would just wake up from looking at their "smart" phones, might reclaim what has been thieved from them? But the way in which it told the story (aside from the bad "AI" VFX) felt as if it wanted to be one part Alejandro Jodorowsky's Sante Sangre and another part Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis with a HUGE HEAPING of Indian mythology with Kalki and Satya and the yugas. Like, it was kind of a mish mash; and not awful but also not fantastic and the framing story just felt as if it was kind of a cop out entirely, though having Kalki's character argue with the script writer towards the end was maybe almost a pay off that was worth all of the lead up to it? Except, it wasn't. As much of a mixed bag Megalopolis was? I still think it had more going for it (but maybe I just like Aubrey Plaza that much? Though it's in poor taste, it is at least topical, I am guessing her now deceased husband probably had different feelings about her maybe?) I can't recommend this movie, but if you've run out of good viewing options, I guess there are worse things? If you want a wtf kind of movie, it may be your cup of tea, but it wasn't mine.
Rifle Club, best of 3? Does also not make it worth recommending. It just wasn't as insufferable as the other two, maybe because it was the shortest of the three? That was probably a big part of it, but some of the characters were kind of endearing. Definitely lots of violence and meat too, not very vegan/vegetarian friendly to understate it. More for weapons (specifically gun) fetishists. I never want to watch Equilibrium (2002) again, but for all the gun stuff in Rifle Club, there was at least nothing as moronic as Equilibrium's "gunkata" (and if you are into that sort of thing, IMHO, Rocket Jump's comedic videos on "Cool Reloads" are unequivocally better viewing, and I doubt any of that stuff would have been made without John Woo HK action gun sagas taking "wild west" on screen gun play to the next level in the 1990s anyway).
Here's hoping those PRs are merged by the time I wake up; otherwise today felt pretty blah.

It was totally possible to encrypt SSL/TLS using self-signed certificates.
Arguably, it's actually more secure.
I seem to recall when CanSecWest used to use self signed certificates and I think most of the security community, trusted @nprofile…j80c competency more than they trusted commercial CAs.
What Let's Encrypt did was remove the financial onus for using the PKI of the CA framework.
TLS has been, is, and presumably will always be optional for HTTP; regardless of the existence of benevolent entities such as Let's Encrypt at least removing the golden calf idolatry blasphemy of commercial CA vendors as being necessary to avoid warnings in browsers for using self-signed certificates.
IMHO, those warnings aren't actually a bad thing. SSH warns when connecting to a host with a public key that it has never seen before. Browsers do more or less the same thing when encountering a self signed certificate, and that warning can be looked at, and appropriate actions taken.
If anything warning less because browsers are designed to be too user friendly and commercial CAs have been compromised in the past, is probably an argument against browsers.
I'm old enough to remember when Moxie hadn't developed a reputation for TextSecure/RedPhone/Signal and entraption BS, and instead was mostly a researcher doin it for the lulz by illustrating how Internet Explorer failed to check chain of authority stuff. But good luck even finding null-prefix-attacks.pdf on Moxie's website these days, because 404s are all the rage apparently and the web is terrible for actually storing anything reliably (maybe you'll have better luck with archive.org mirrors doing a different deity's work in backing up increasingly ephemeral data, but actually you won't because: http://www.thoughtcrime.org/papers/null-prefix-attacks.pdf results in the following error message from archive.org: "Sorry.
This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine.").

I doubt I'll change your mind, but I come from a realm in space and time where the World Wide Web was never good and has only gotten progressively worse with time.
HTTP is stateless, which is I guess a mild win for distributed NUMA stuff (particularly back in the late 1980s/early 1990s when a computer having 2MB of RAM was not even the norm yet); but more or less horrific from a network protocol design, to the point where even FTP (which predates TCP/IP entirely) IMHO is less brain dead. Tearing down/re-establishing TCP connections constantly? So wasteful.
The S in HTTPS is still optional, which means that ubiquitous encryption will never happen. Moreover SSL/TLS have been so bad that they didn't even have rudimentary PFS (Perfect Forward Secrecy) until extremely recently. It's only thanks to Let's Encrypt (RIP Peter Eckersley whom I knew personally) that TLS has become even mildly tractable and instead of being a default, it costs that organization roughly $5 million/year to operate!
No doubt the $$$ made by commercial CA vendors per year has made a killing for decades, so the incentives are aligned such that commercial CA vendors will never want to see Let's Encrypt thrive as well.
Oh yeah, and that thing about rouge CAs being a real threat model that can (and has) completely undermined all the illusion of security that SSL/TLS provide (I was privy to the research of generating a CA cert for *. [insomuch as . is the root of all DNS TLDs] before publication and suffice to say, I don't think that threat is acknowledged for being as bad as the proof of concept was insomuch as the proof of concept was intentionally defanged slightly so as to make it less likely to be abused).
I'm trying to remember how a friend in college described HTTP when he learned about it, something along the lines of: "it is as if gopher and FTP had a bastard step child and it's somehow worse than both of its parents."
To say nothing of HTML being crappier than (uP)[La]TeX for text formatting. It is so painful to write right to left, vertically aligned orthographic systems (such as more or less all CJKV languages) in HTML and it's only been very recently that even poor attempts have been barely possible that many websites for native speakers/readers of such languages, just give up trying entirely and default to English-olonialism text formatting styles.
Oh, and browsers being awful.
And a huge attack surface.
And the browser wars.
The unfortunately reality that though there are hundreds of browser (one of my past employers has probably the leading commercial automated testing framework for such things) they're still basically "dominated" by one, or maybe two at best, vendors which exceedingly horrific anti-trust/hegemonic surveillance capitalism business practices?
I could go on, but no: things going to http(s) over time has been a HUGE backwards move IMHO.
Oh, did I mention anything about performance? Because WebApps also fail there relative to local applications, almost invariably.
Now, instead of seasoned developers actually doing cross-OS development, far too many seem content to develop for one browser, on one OS, everyone else bedamned.
Not to mention a lot of the so-called "frameworks" to "simplify" that terrible "development" paradigm have begat even worse problem (I have lost count of all the "How one developer just broke Node, Babel and thousands of projects in 11 lines of JavaScript" dependency hell horror stories I've seen.
Software for the PCエンジン? Mostly predates the World Wide Web entirely. Still functions perfectly without a network connection. Has CD-DA audio with the right peripherals. Coders had to be decent to get much interesting to run on a CPU that clocked at 7MHz and had 8 KB RAM 64 KB VRAM, yet still some pulled off FMV with synced audio; something that YouTube requires how much RAM and clock cycles to do now? Sure, the resolutions and color depths might be higher, but lossy compression is more or less a given. Not a win doing things in a browser IMHO. ;(
If more people still wrote HTTP(S) stuff that loaded and functioned properly in lynx, maybe it would at least be an accessibility win, but writing from experience: very few seem to actually design their HTTP(S) stuff with accessibility in mind. ;(

I am tempted to suggest ICB just to be from out in left field.
But y'know, a lot of OpenBSD devs did (and maybe still do?) use it.
sshchat isn't my top choice (which would be SILC) but sshchat definitely has an ICB++ vibe to it IMHO.
If, OTOH, you want something with so-called "message persistence" like the kids (they aren't cool, but they're definitely not graybeards) then I dunno, Matrix and uhhh maybe Matrix are it that are at least libre/free open source?
(OFC, you could just use IRC and psybnc and still have message persistence, but don't tell anyone that, also don't tell anyone that you could use psybnc to have encrypted chat on IRC networks even if they are so old they don't support TLS tunneling.)

If mutt has ever been surpassed for UNIX TUI/CLI MUAs, I have missed out on whatever is better.
IMHO, elm was sort of the apogee of when TUI MUAs were awesome, but pine was awfully useful for different reasons (and thanks for pico! And more confusingly subsequently also nano in reaction) but unfortunately whenever people started shunting way too much HTML into SMTP, elm couldn't seem to cope quite as well.
But y'know, maybe there is something better than mutt these days?
It sure as hell isn't gmail.

Having worked as a chef professionally, I don't have strong opinions on stainless steel frying pans.
They seem to work pretty well!
I don't think decent ones are terribly expensive at restaurant supply stores?
As far as brands you might find in your consumer oriented places, I am completely clueless though.
There is definitely a lot of expensive cook wear out there, though at least personally the only expensive stuff that really seems fascinating are all the ceramic stuff (which I guess has similar properties to nonstick, minus the horrible downsides to teflon/PFAs) but I am not a moneybags so I have never tried such things and cannot comment on them personally.
Other than avoiding teflon/PFAs, I think there are probably good reasons to also avoid aluminum cookware from what research I have seen?
If you are already a cast iron guy, you've always got a solid fall back.

Through a weird series of attempted calls (why some networks seem to fail with VoIP/Google Voice to the point where it will ring, but not actually pass voice traffic is beyond me, but shitty network "engineers" who block things like SSH exist too, so sure why not fuck with VoIP/h.323 traffic passing too? I shouldn't be surprised I guess) I have a test drive scheduled for tomorrow, though he didn't want me to get my hopes up that I could drive the car off the lot.
Which, wasn't my plan anyway.
But no friggin way was I going to put a deposit on a car I haven't test driven.

Still at work for a little bit longer but during a lull where I can look at my pocket device.
I had been thinking about planning a test drive later in the day, but the dealership is a 3 hour 33 minute drive from here, with tolls and closes at 18:00.
If worked ends precisely at 13:30 (unlikely but that is what I will invoice for anyway because of reasons) and I run into zero issues on the drive that leaves me with maybe an hour for the test drive before turning around and driving back? ;(
Oh yeah, not time for lunch and that town is decidedly not vegan friendly too.
So, I’m thinking of driving there tomorrow for the test drive instead and then scrambling back to the Bay Area for my evening class.
Alternatively, I could take a leisurely afternoon and drive there tonight and sleep in my car, but it’s snowing weather and I don’t have snow tires which is already kinda giving me the heebyjeebies and sure I could stay in a hotel but that is just another expense I don’t need in my life.
I think I’ll take it slowly and get an earlyish start tomorrow and just hope no one swoops in to buy that car.
Which is pretty unlikely?
It’s used after all and not very unique, but it is relatively low mileage and seems to be in pretty good condition?
In fact, doing some calculations, I realize I drive approximately 4x more per annum than the previous owner of that vehicle!
sigh I sincerely don’t understand why cars are popular.
I understand them even less for people who barely drive them.
But then there’s people like Doug Demuro who bought a used Lamborghini Countach with fewer miles on it than the car I’m looking at and paid something like ＄50,000 on its first service which is > 2x the asking price of the used car I am looking at and he probably drives less than I do but owns like 5 cars.
Which is a long winded way of saying: I think car nuts are beyond insane!
Meanwhile if I lived in a truly civilized country like Japan?
I doubt I would ever spend as much per year on train travel, even using the Shinkansen almost exclusively, as I flushed down the toilet on my current vehicle.

I have been away from the FediVerse a lot recently mostly because life away from keyboards has been demanding.
The game of trees -portable 0.107 update was enough to get me to sit down in front of a keyboard for a little bit more this morning.
I arrived at work super early and think I’ve completed most of the necessary tasks before doors open so I finally got around to revising on toot from a while ago because I realized:
Even though I may know someone by their handle in the “scene” others presumably don’t and since they’ve presented research publicly using their given name and getting the correct date of the referenced presentation is not as difficult as I was inadvertently making it for my readers.
I don’t know if Luis Miras is on the FediVerse and we haven’t crossed paths in person in many years, but my apologies for the oversight. No doubt one of the coolest researchers I’ve ever had the honor of getting to know who has continually blown my mind.
There’s still stuff I wish I could share even though it’s been years, but as far as I know some things still aren’t public so I’ll continue to keep them in my noggin for now.

I'm not sure that's a problem.
I think a problem is when HUGE NAMES (e.g. Micro$oft owned GitHub) uses incorrect terminology that I must enable 2FA (Two Factor Authentication) when I am already using at least 4 factors (more often at least 5) and they have even more factors of authentication to choose from, including passkeys.
At a minimum they should be correcting their terminology to be MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) but adding more factors when I am already at a level of having factor fatigue, is not a security win, it's security theater.
Moreover, since I was previously IT Admin for iSEC Partners, I want to scream at the morons who drafted that email.

So the Ars article harping on passkeys and confusion, is the least of my worries, personally.
I'm old enough to remember when "two factor authentication" was called "paranoid mode" and I've implemented client certificate authentication at past employers.
And y'know what?
I'm beyond burnt out at trying to get folks to adopt a stronger security stance and when people getting paid more than I have are misusing terminology and mandating "changes" when I'm already using many factors of authentication, I mostly wonder:
Who do they think they are improving security for? It isn't me, it just makes me wish that everyone would migrate their code out of GitHub already.
I don't care about the passkey issue. I know you do because you worked on some implementations of such things, but you may be too close to the fire to see how others who sympathize with wanting people to not get hurt, are being burnt by even bigger morons fanning the wrong flames in our field.

Yeah, I'm not a masochist.
This car was A OK until a recall (which was a software update) was performed a couple years after it was purchased, after which the check engine light started coming on with some frequency.
The car kept driving fine despite the warnings (well aside from transmission dying earlier this Fall).
The check engine light that came on six days after I got it out of the shop most recently?
Went off again this morning.
There's something very sketchy in the software I think. ;-/
A car without "smarts" doesn't seem to exist in the new automotive market, but I sincerely don't trust those smarts. Given how long I've been coding and the horrors I've seen, network connected cars in particular seem as if they're just waiting to become a case study in wormable road hazards.

snac is kind of neat insomuch as it shows me who blocks me and while most of the time I am like, "I have no idea who this person is nor what I wrote to cause such a reaction" I looked a little further into a couple of blocks recently and 1: works for Azure/Micro$oft apparently and 2: is a grad student with a website "hosted" on GitHub that doesn't even load.
So y'know, if you don't like when I write bad things about hosting providers owned by Micro$oft, you might kind of want to make sure that your own use of said hosting provider is actually doing what it claims it should be doing, instead of reinforcing my denigration of such it.sh?

My first employer after I graduated from University had "two nines" (99.x%) of uptime in an industry that claimed to have "five nines" (99.999% 5.26 minutes of downtime a year) as the standard goal in the telcom world. I only worked for that company from 1999 to 2001, but I and others dragged them to "three nines" (99.9x% 8.77 hours of downtime in a year 43.83 minutes a month of maximum allowable downtime) of uptime before I had left.
Circa 2009 with the help of @nprofile…djn0 outstanding networking skillz, the employer I worked for was up and still passing packets even when AT&T's fiber ring had been cut in several places in the SF Bay Area before a looming strike (e.g. https://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/10/us/10brfs-VANDALSCUTPH_BRF.html).
Last I checked, Amazon/AWS and Alphabet Inc./Google/GCP, Micro$oft/Azure didn't even maintain two nines of uptime. It's definitely astounding to me, how some of the "big" names don't even seem to maintain standards that used to be a given in our industry decades ago. But 100% uptime? Probably not impossible but highly improbable.

I can't even begin to imagine making a monitoring system blocking. I hope that dev realized how he single-handedly torpedoed the entire project with that idiocy. Though I get the impression since others humored him, it's doubtful he ever realized the error of his ways.
Monitoring and logging can be useful when diagnosing problems, sure; though that's a best case scenario. More often than not such things are a waste of resources entirely and rarely ever looked at if things are going well.
If this kind of dev were to go into a brick and mortar business and claim: that the business couldn't sell something at a register because the building security cameras had been non responsive for the last 5 minutes. Maybe it would help less technical people to understand what a terrible business decision that would be? Or how such a choice would very likely ultimately lead to the demise of any potential profits by focusing on the wrong priorities?
I don't even want to think about how expensive that cloud bill must have been. Then again, as a teenager after I finally got a modem functioning, my first phone bill was so expensive that my parents' confiscated my modem! I learned how to phreak after that and they never saw a phone bill with any toll charges again after that.
My first modem was 1200 baud.
I kind of get the impression that dev never had to deal with constraints or parents like mine. ;)

USB-C is such a terrible connector.
Moreover, it is not good for power.
PoE devices IMHO are better for power delivery and I am hardly a fan of PoE.
But I have had so many USB-C cables fail on me over the years.
How many RJ45 cables have I had fail on me over the decades? Fewer than the USB-C cables.
Even post-Steve Jobs Apple run by the greedy fuckwit Tim Cook eventually realized that the "MacBook with Retina Display" powered only by USB-C was a bad idea and they brought back the MagSafe connector (albeit in MagSafe 3 and unlike the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 adapter, the greedy post-Steve Jobs Tim Cook CrApple has not, AFAIK, released a Mag-Safe to MagSafe 3 adapter; even though you know Apple was making a hefty profit on those $10 dealios.)
I read someone recently write something to the effect that maybe the USA will become irrelevant because of the EU.
I don't think so.
Maybe, at best the EU will be sort of more progressive and help offer some mild push back to rampant capitalism gone wrong. Sort of how maybe some GDPR protections spill over to web users outside of the EU, sometimes. Just as California's CCPA protections maybe help others outside of California on occasion because the InterGALACTIC Network of Computers in reality never has been and never will be constrained to any one geographic locale even if most folks choose to ignore that the Internet is a contraction of the Intergalactic Network of Computers because of reasons that aren't worth getting into.

Not that I am opposed to commercial proprietary tech entirely.
But whatever the timeline is where we had laptop Amigas is doubtlessly better than this one and I am not on that timeline. ;(
I'll settle for some RISC-V hardware in a portable form factor (which kind of exists, sort of, I think? I just don't own any of that RISC-V hardware, yet) and maybe some L4 microkernel variant with a bunch of decent ports/packages from Nix or something maybe?
I don't have that either though. ;(
I did see that SiFive released a new RISC-V board recently (https://www.sifive.com/boards/hifive-premier-p550), it's even priced lower ($399 for 16GB RAM version $499 for the 32GB of RAM version [only 10 boards left in stock as I write this which is fewer than when I checked it the other day]) than the HiFive Unmatched that I paid for/pre-ordered and never received, with better specs! With Ubuntu preinstalled? Ungh, definitely not my cup of tea.

It could be much worse.
e.g. here's a MacPorts' "maintainer" with 60% of their Portfiles out of date behind upstream:

We'll see.
I got a Pixel 8a recently to replace a 5a that died earlier this year (talk about a short lived device!). It claims it will receive updates until 2030, but Alphabet Inc./Google have lied in the past.
Overall, it seems as if it is a massive downgrade from the 5a. Headphone jacks are a win to me and the Android Auto integration seems worse by far as well.
I'm going to try GrapheneOS on it to see if it rectifies the vast observable deficiencies; but as someone who was using Android in the ADP1/G1 days it only continues to get worse with time. The last Android device I used which I didn't utterly despise was the Sidekick 4G (which was basically a Samsung since by then Danger and their HipTop had been subsumed by Micro$oft and the Sidekick was basically a T-Mobile rebranding of the HipTop anyway so they were free to slap that name onto other vendors' devices).

Woke up early, did laundry, went to the gym, got some vegan smoothie + food, went to my storage unit did some reorganizing, discovered a vinyl box set I ordered is TOO LARGE for the vinyl storage cases I own (wtfh). I need to order more storage cases. Stopped to get some vegan tacos at a Fredo's Vegan Tacos in Castroville. Now at another laundromat, doing more laundry (basically sheets that are too much of an ordeal at most laundromats, so I save doing them for specific laundromats that have more convenient parking) will hopefully eventually see Maria in a theater; though not the theater I attempted to view it in yesterday (that showing was canceled, apparently because of a bat infestation?! Also it was their last screening. I feel as if the world is trying to conspire to get me to subscribe to Netflix again, but eff that. Maybe if they ditch using Amazon? I hate paying for so many stupid streaming services which are worse than the ones I helped pioneer decades ago.)

It's extremely healthy to have a life away from keyboards and computers. If anything I find I don't do digital detoxing often enough.
But it's even better to be mindful of those dear to you. Given that many who are dear to me, no longer speak with me nor reply to other attempts at communication, if I knew how to resuscitate those interactions instead of whine about them online, I would already have done so.

Thanks to neverpanic, my PR to update MacPorts' signify has been merged!
But now I'm listed as a maintainer and repology.org has this as a ding against me because it tracks signify version numbers from some different downstream aimed at Linux.
There is no signify-portable branch and thus no authoritative signify version.
MacPorts' is basically updated from OpenBSD's sources from December 2024 now.
How to fix this?
Submit a PR to repology?
Start a signify-portable project? That seems like a nightmare I don't want to tackle.
Ignore it? I'm leaning towards ignoring.
At least, for now.

I just bought some vegan ink I have been wanting for ages and bamboo "brushes". Time to go back to the fundamentals; I anticipate such things will be much more gratifying; though s&h from Japan and the time it will take such supplies to reach me will be a while, it's not as if I am in a race to return to forms of writing that are millennia old. I'm grateful someone re"discovered"/created vegan ink sticks (apparently such things have existed in the past, but one of the most "recent" formulae for such things is over a century old from what little information I can find about such things).

Subaru apparently won Consumer Reports' "most reliable" ranking this year? I had a WRX a while ago which was honestly, more powerful than any car I need. I know in Europe they've sold diesel Impreza models which get something like 40MPG which I would much rather have, but importing cars to the USA is a major headache, especially in California. Even after waiting 25+ years for the importing to be possible, there's EPA and emission standards which are potentially problematic.
OFC, if you're a rich car person, such legislation doesn't matter; as Doug Demuro recently reviewed a Xiaomi SU7 and mentioned that the CEO of Ford, Jim Farley is driving a Xiaomi SU7 as his personal vehicle. Which speaks volumes of how:
1. Laws don't apply to the rich.
2. The CEO of Ford, doesn't even drive a Ford; Ford's are trash cars.
(Ironically, a Ford Model T gets better MPG than most cars sold today.)

I went without a car from around 2011 to 2018 and given the nightmare this 2018 model year vehicle has been, I am thinking of going back to being car less. Unfortunately, in the USA, due to the GM Streetcar conspiracy, mass transit was decimated and never recovered, so I have a fair bit of logistics to handle before I can potentially relocate to somewhere to go without a car and still lead a life that is what I want; but definitely the previous cars I owned (all 2001 or older) seemed far better in almost every way to the car I currently have and the cars I see being sold presently.

Watched a bunch of movies in theaters the past couple days, brief run down:
The Fire Inside: I don't care about boxing, or sports; yet this was by far the best movie I watched yesterday. It's based on the real story of Claressa "T-Rex" Shields who was the first American woman to win an Olympic gold metal in boxing (when she was just seventeen) and is the only American boxer (male or female) to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in boxing. Brian Tyree Henry's performance as coach Jason Crutchfield has Oscar "best supporting actor" caliber acting IMHO.
Sonic 3: I didn't even watch Sonic 2, so I am not the best person to review this. I fell asleep during parts of it. Bad guys, can also be good is the takeaway I guess? I dunno. If you stay all the way through the credits there's a teaser for something, but what that something is I couldn't tell you.
Homestead: I hated this. During the credits they do one of those QRCode "pass it forward" BS campaigns and tell you about how it's actually a TV series and you can watch the next episode if you buy someone else a ticket to see this movie? I don't think it deserved to be shown on a big screen. Candidly, I would have hated this movie even watching it at home (if I had a home).
Nosferatu: I watched this in IMAX. I fell asleep multiple times. Some shots were really well done as far as cinematography and frame composition, but overall; I just don't care. I am not into horror, there are way better horror films and it's totally not my cup of tea. It's almost as if they picked some of the best looking cast members just to make them seem even more beautiful in contrast to the freak show of Nosferatu. But like, Nosferatu originally was basically a Dracula movie which side stepped Bram Stoker's copyright I thought? Since that has expired and the credits even explicitly mention Bram Stoker's Dracula, I kind of felt as if they didn't need to remake Nosferatu. YMMV but I think the original had a lot more going for it than this ever will and in a decade, unless you're some horror fetishist, most will have probably even forgotten about this remake entirely.
Viduthalai Part 2 (Tamil with English subtitles): I think I may have seen the movie that this is a sequel to, but I am not sure. Moreover, I don't think it needed a sequel. This movie is not good. I fell asleep multiple times during it and even with the intermission it felt excessively long. I appreciate that Indian cinema has a lot of "cops are so corrupt, the criminals are actually the heroes" tropes and this is in that vein for sure; but it's not a very good take on that story IMHO.
Babygirl: I am not a fan of Nicole Kidman. You would think that having previously been Senior System Administrator for CNEMedia (aka Kink dot com and affiliated sites) I might have more empathy for D/s sorts of mainstream movies, but I don't. Just go watch actual porn instead, please. It's so much better than crap like this. Trivia: my past employer was approached to help make a sequel to 2002's Secretary. They passed. I get the impression that whomever was behind this movie, wanted to make something similar? The best character IMHO in the entire movie was Esther McGregor as Isabel Mathis (one of Nicole Kidman's character's daughters) and they gave her a friggin mullet. It's as if they were trying to make her look uglier than her mom and still failed? It has two upshots in the entire film: 1. a couple of songs from Barong Family/Yellow Claw collaborators, "Creep" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wPqyaIxV54) being one of them the other in the credits is "LSD" but good luck finding a Barong Family/Yellow Claw song under the same name, even though when you hear it on a theater sound system you'll recognize it if you're a Yellow Claw fan. The second semi-redeeming part was the ever so short discussion around consent in the movie, but that lasts for all of 30 seconds, if that. So, a resounding no. Seriously, BDSM porn from the 1990s spends more time discussing safe words and consent than this thing. Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman's character has been married for 19 years, has two kids and seems embarrassed about admitting that she wants to watch porn with her spouse? And goes so far as to sneak off to watch it on her own? To use a line from home-wrecker Harris Dickinson's (that sure seems like a porno last name) character: that seems "dated". Maybe this will appeal to glass ceiling smashing women CEOs? I think that is an obscenely small demographic though and more or less everyone in the movie is completely unrelatable.
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl: this was probably #2 out of the movies I saw the past couple of days. It's hard to go wrong with Wallace & Gromit and their stop motion antics. However, if I am being honest, this feels more like a rehash of the first break out success, as we meet Feathers ("Have you seen this chicken?") the penguin again as the villain and are even given a plausible return of Feathers in another sequel conceit. I fell asleep during parts of the start and really only seemed to be able to stay awake after Gromit had been escaped his confines. Nick Park, who created Wallace and Gromit and apparently co-directed this, is also not really featured prominently in the credits, which makes me wonder if he was more hands off and coasting and leaving most of the work up to others? Anyway, it still has a good heart and it's difficult to be super negative about this franchise in general but it's definitely not feeling super fresh. Kind of like more recent Lupin the 3rd installments (Monkey Punch passed away and while we can celebrate the 45th Anniversary of Castle of Cagliostro which was Miyazaki Hayao's feature length directorial debut, a lot of the stuff since then has just been kind of mid and that's sort of how I feel about this installment of Wallace and Gromit as well.)

I'm happy to do my small part. Thankfully, others have been helping to improve the MacPort as well. For example, ryandesign/Ryan Carsten Schmidt spotted the error with the man page Warning and provided a fix here:

/me sees some post about slow transfer rates on some tool to extract some firmware from some “old” piece of hardware.
But: the hardware is way newer than other hardware I can think of having used that was seeing 1MB/s transfer speeds over an EPP parallel port (like ISA level tech vintage stuff).
And then I see the dev of the tool mention something about refactoring their Python and I’m like:
“Oh, the slower than 56K modem transfer speeds on that hardware suddenly make sense.”
Along with a continued feeling of dread that many devs these days don’t get low level enough for anyone’s own good and we all suffer for it.
Meanwhile that > 1MB/s transfer tool that comes to mind on older hardware even did endian byte flipping on-the-fly because it was clearly coded by someone (shout outs to mfm of Dextrose era scene stuff) who clearly had a clue.
I can’t help it though. My friends in grade school were already part of the warez scene. I probably knew better coders before I was even a teenager than many I’ve encountered in adulthood. 😕

I've been thinking a lot about @nprofile…35nk's recent ACM post but haven't had time to formalize a well thought out response.
I sincerely disagree that judges are comparable to "super users" even if they may have some elevated privileges, they're at best like a lackey in an Active Directory who can reset user passphrases and maybe do a little bit more.
Moreover, it seems to presume that "rule of law" is the apogee to which we can or should be abiding, and maybe because I live in the USA where carceral slavery still exists and > 90% of inmates never even had a jury trial but were railroaded into taking "plea" deals? I can't, in good conscience, be at peace with thinking that judges can or should be the be all or end all.
But, in the USA at least, judge's are not superusers. The POTUS for example, can and does issue pardons.
If it were a chess board, maybe a judge is like a knight? Definitely not a superuser.
Moreover, if you're talking code (and we are, since cryptography isn't being done by hand by most when it comes to programmatic systems) then a developer IMHO, transcends such paradigms, just as a game maker isn't locked into a game of chess, they can define an entirely new game.
But last night I watched The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Persian: دانه‌ی انجیر معابد) and again, I think that since that harrowing tale focuses on someone (ab)using judicial powers, that leaving decisions about cryptography up to courts, which are demonstrably corrupt in many jurisdictions is simply a recipe for disaster, like leaving sanctioned back doors for warrant-less wiretapping (e.g. CALEA, PATRIOT Act, etc.) already are.
So, those are some perfunctory perspectives of mine in lieu of a more well formed response.

Unfortunately, I've seen Discord bridges in the opposite direction.
e.g. there was a private SILC daemon that I used to chill on with dmuz (RIP) aempirei et al.
After I learned that dmuz had passed away, I connected to it again to see what the dealio was.
I had clearly been gone too long.
Once upon a time, they had improved their SILC daemon to have full ANSI color support (even blink ANSI codes IIRC) and I seem to recall testing it successfully with UTF-8 too (albeit, most others didn't have their clients configured correctly and seemed to freak t.f. out but whatever).
Unfortunately, at some point in the intervening hiatus, someone decided to bridge that SILC daemon to Discord, and basically all messages were being shunted back and forth.
It ruins the SILC experience and eradicates the PFS (Perfect Forward Secrecy) paradigm built into SILC as a security mechanism.
I did connect to their Discord "server" and saw they had added all sorts of other garbage (a stock ticker channel comes to mind). Someone apparently tech bro-ed too hard.
I did thankfully get a little bit more insight into dmuz's untimely passing as well as his widow's well being; but that bridge friggin ruined the rest of the experience of that charming little SILC server.
I gave up and haven't been back in quite a while. No doubt the handful of individuals left who may still frequent that place and be on decent terms with me we'll maybe cross paths in person someday hopefully; but dmuz is RIP and aempirei was no where to be seen either.

In the SF Bay Area, I had a Clipper card, back when it was still a pilot program known as TransLink.
IIRC, it always required being linked to a credit card?
Moreover, now there are billboards plastered everywhere about installing the Clipper App or whatever on your iPhone/Android device (presumably, only ones new enough to support NFC junk).
Like, I get that when Japan, introduced Suica (sort of their NFC often used on mass transit/JR/etc.), it was 2001. Moreover, Japan was and AFAIK still is a very cash based society; so having a proxy for payment to an NFC card was kind of nice and I guess Suica payment can also be used at a lot of places in lieu of other payment methods now? But AFAIK, that has been a more recent development (I haven't visited Japan since circa 1997/1998).
But ultimately, they're all just kind of proxies for payment systems, and money itself, as a construct is just a proxy for "value" (whatever the fuck that means). It's probably turtles all the way down, but at least personally it seems as if the fewer turtles I need to step on, the better?
Which means, at least personally using a "smart" phone loaded with a Clipper dataset is something I never want. If my phone dies (as happens because everything is built like garbage these days) or is stolen or whatever, it's a lot more deleterious/painful/expensive to replace than if I have a Clipper card fail on me.
But, I'm the sort of person who still keeps cash on hand too for if and when these more "sophisticated" layers of technology invariably fail.

I really dislike Discord and it seems to be getting worse with time. At some point I think they began to use the same broken database that LiveNation/TicketMaster and some other hair brained systems utilize which seems to consider my phone # not valid (it's VoIP/Google Voice/[previously "Grand Central"] and I have been using it mostly without issues for well over a decade) for "verification" purposes which, sometimes it also doesn't seem to care about.
Ironically I applied to work at Discord years ago, I didn't even get screened; maybe just a polite/automated rejection email? I'd have to check my archives.
I got to know Kathy Wang personally at REcon.cx long ago and she was pretty awesome! I guess she was (but is no longer as of earlier this year?) Discord's CSO? I reached out to her at one point but didn't get a reply either, which is who knows what; maybe my missive never made it to her field of vision? Hopefully some day she and I will be able to spill the tea in person again since we last crossed paths; though I also hope that she is onto better and brighter endeavors now!
Meshtastic seems interesting though. I don't have any hardware which supports it presently, but from what I have seen of it, it appears promising.

I guess I like to keep others updated when I went so far as to boost grunfink's 2.67 announcement, but had stalled out on my own efforts to update the MacPorts' Portfile?
A lot of the time, I can knock that stuff out relatively quickly (it takes more effort to jump through all the GitHub BS than it does to update and diff and test locally usually) but occasionally some more tweaks are needed and it takes me longer. Thankfully, it wasn't a lot of extra effort, just more than I could devote focused time and attention to earlier today and I wanted to make sure others (however few there may be) were looped in so that they weren't wondering why I hadn't submitted a Pull Request.
No doubt, it will take even longer for that to get merged and for MacPorts users to benefit even now that I have had some additional time to get around to doing what needed to be done; but I am rather intentionally doing my best to not take on more responsibilities at the moment. Decades of ops work habits are hard to break, but maybe it's better for my sanity and collaboration?
OFC, there are times where I just kind of miss diving in, doing some tweaks and moving on without concerns about all of the formalities of Pull Requests and commit messages and all that rigamarole. ;)
I still think RANCID set forth the kind of prod/ops first, diffs later (and more automated) paradigm that I prefer, but much of the rest of the world seems really into this front loaded code check ins and CI pipelines first paradigm, even if it feels as if it is putting the cart in front of the horse to me; I am doing my best to collaborate with others' persnickety preferences as possible.
(As an aside, but sort of related, this reminded me I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' signify, but since that Portfile maintainer has been AWOL for years, that PR went into "maintainer timeout" and will probably require even more formalities to address before it can or will be merged. If I were wearing my "ops hat" and had commit access, mostly likely it would have already been done a week ago and I would have moved onto other things and forgotten about it by now. Instead, I have updated the PR with a comment about "next steps" and who knows how much longer it will take to get a response to that. Feels like a snail's pace to me! But, tis the nature of that beast! ;)
Meanwhile, I have more $dayjob obligations in a little bit and will be AFK again; but I'm grateful to have had a bit of a "really long lunch breaks to destroy capitalism" respite in between this morning/afternoon's work and this evening's Christmas concert (which is a free event anyway and more done for the local community's benefit).

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' snac to 2.67 here:

Two of three GitHub Actions Continuous Integration checks passed, which is a good sign; hopefully the others will pass without issues.
As usual, it's up to others with commit access to merge it!
Thanks again for your and others' continued improvements to snac! Specifically I noticed shout outs to nowster and Shamar in the RELEASE_NOTES.md and I seem to recall watching the discourse about the PID locking suggested and discussed rather collaboratively too!
(My apologies for the delay. The Makefile was slightly modified, which in turn broke the $files/Makefile.patch applied by MacPorts so I needed to rework that which took me a bit longer than usual given other work obligations I have had today.
Though not a concern for upstream, for MacPorts users I also noticed the following warning when running % port test:
"Warning: violation by /opt/local/man
Warning: snac violates the layout of the ports-filesystems!
Warning: Please fix or indicate this misbehavior (if it is intended), it will be an error in future releases!"
Though, it appears as if the man pages are where I think they should be for MacPorts? I have never seen that Warning before, so my guess is something about MacPorts intended prescriptive behavior has been changed but I am not exactly certain what the expected behavior is supposed to be now? I will look into it further, but hopefully it isn't a concern for users at the moment; just thought I would mention it for the sake of being thorough!
However, it's entirely possible I messed something up too; so if others with greater wisdom than I see that Warning and know what to do to correct it, or if they encounter any other issues with MacPorts' snac, others are more than welcome to submit Pull Requests with improvements! Or feel free to open up an issue on MacPorts Trac instance at https://trac.macports.org and I'll look into it.)

There were 18 friggin packages at my mailbox! sigh At least I let them know that I would be delayed since my car was back in the shop, but in the past 3 months my car has been in the shop approximately 6 weeks?
I don't even want to think about how much $ has been wasted on mechanics. ;-/

Last night, so nice to sleep somewhere under the stars, without the noise and lights of cities and that friggin paper thin walled hotel.
I still wish I had a home, but clearly can't afford to buy land someplace remote and surrounded by nature and fresh air while still struggling with debts.
At least I can drive some places remote and park and slumber for limited subsets of time.
I don't have sufficient words for how much I am loving the light rains/drizzle in Northern California at the moment either. Clearly the plants are loving it too. It has been a very dry year overall.

Maybe! I feel as if I have definitely seen GitHub mentioned similar "requirements" before, but if I am receiving more emails with deadlines, I get the feeling that all the multiple factors of authentication I am already using with them, are clearly not sufficient for what they want, even though they exceed 2 factors.
In general I feel as if my general interaction with GitHub currently requires at least four, sometimes five different factors to do anything useful with code checkouts and submitting pull requests.

I was suggesting perhaps the USB drive on that Swiss Army Knife could be swapped out for one of the compatible listed ESP32 USB dongles which can be loaded with the USBArmyKnife code just to make it a literal USB Army Knife. ;)
I'm not sure about the dimensions of the respective dongles nor how easy and or difficult it would be to modify that Victorinox though as I don't own such things.

I don't even have words with how out of sync I feel sometimes. Missed two buses by such an infuriatingly short distance.
But, as I was walking I was thinking about how terrible the Bay Area seems to me now.
And how I see at least one outspoken person who moved here, from another country claim how the naysayers bad mouthing the Bay Area seem full of it.
I'm hardly rich, nor as well traveled as I would like to be, but I have been to: Canada, Mexico, the UK, Japan, Germany, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China (though that last one would insist the previous two belong to it).
But more than that: I have lived in the Bay Area in this human incarnation since the 1970s.
I remember what it was like, and it was: cleaner, more multicultural, more diverse, less insanely expensive, had fewer homeless, more wildlife, more greenery, less bullshit, less traffic, less pollution. In every appreciable way, it seemed as if it has only gotten worse as long as I have been alive.
No doubt, had I been alive before the Spanish Conquistadors came with their genocidal colonialism, wiping out or enslaving many of the Indigenous tribes in these regions, it would have seemed as if the trend of this area getting worse has been going on for centuries.
So no, I'm sorry. If you moved here, from some other place and think that it isn't as bad as the people who have lived here all of our lives are telling you?
I think you haven't walked a mile in my shoes and you will never be able to fathom my perspective, because clearly you seem more invested in yours and nay-saying those who were born here thank acknowledging how much worse things are now and how they only seem to be on a continuing trend of decline.
I have written previously, that if you were not born here, and you are not actively involved with remediating the 114 National Superfund sites in California (of which > 20 still remain in Silly Con Valley alone) I don't think you are meaningfully helping make this place better for anyone.
We don't need another web dev from anywhere else, I was doing web dev in my teens, unpaid for postdocs who seemed to have their heads shoved up their asses despite having hardware that cost tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars and network uplinks I still can't dream of affording myself at nps.navy.mil and I wasn't alone in that. The world doesn't need more shitty code, it has more than enough of that as it is.

It is possible publish things to the World Wide Web, without such features.
Maybe, try alternatives if you don't want replies? Static HTML has a lot less overhead than systems which are attempting to be discursive.
There are other issues I see with a specific individual in particular caught up in that morass, but have generalized it just to show how dumbfounding it is to pose such rhetoric.

I wandered around to see what the winter walk dealio was.
It was: a let down.
A guy on a Zamboni on the ice rink was probably the most interesting thing?
Some xmas tree and menorah in giant form.
A couple of stages: with no performers! Just big speakers playing crummy Muzak (wirelessly? Bluetooth?)
Some absolutely unappetizing food trucks.
Someone selling overpriced cocktails.
At least I didn’t waste a lot of time wandering, it was sparsely attended.
The best part was probably just having some streets closed and made available to foot traffic.

I haven't really explored opus tbh. I think once I had systems capable of handling FLAC in real-time (and for the longest time Serato only offered ALAC and avoided FLAC which was annoying a.f.) I was pretty happy.
I think WavPack seemed vaguely fascinating insomuch as it is a hybrid lossy/lossless codec, but again I haven't explored it more or less at all.
For some histrionics, personally by 2007, when I was the only deejay I knew with a Rane TTM57SL (which basically was the first mixer with a built-in DVS/Serato sound card) I was working in my "day" job for the company which was the first company that was doing HD live video streaming on the web, and so the battles I was trying to fight (and losing, miserably) were advocating for use of lossless video codecs (e.g. Dirac; one of the authors whom I know personally and I at least managed to get some of my co-workers to go out to lunch with before they rejected the premise of pushing that needle forward at all). Around that time, I remember being invited to deejay at some house party in Santa Cruz, owned by a guy I knew from deejayin at The Box (a gothdustrial "weekly" at the Blue Lagoon on Pacific Avenue) who had a day job working for Seagate. One of the other deejays he invited brought his mixer (a Rane TTM56) + SL1 (Rane DVS interface) and he seemed skeptical of my mixer (which was basically the iterated/integrated version of what he had). That guy's "day job" at that time was working for Apple on Fairplay (and its DRM) IIRC? sigh Weird and terribly small world sometimes. In a weird way, mixers with integrated sound cards now are common place, but at that time, Vestax had the TUB-1 audio interface which could be used with some of its mixers (e.g. PMC-05Pro) and tbh, I kind of like that "modular" design? Though unfortunately for everyone, Vestax went from being one of the biggest skratch deejay friendly hardware companies, to bankrupt by 2014. Meanwhile a lot of the other hardware vendors/brands have merged (e.g. Rane and Denon are both part of the inMusic conglomerate, AFAIK there's currently an injunction blocking the acquisition of Serato by AlphaTheta [which is the company behind Pioneer DJ/Rekordbox) to say nothing of the it.sh show that Apple and such have had on the commercial music industry.
But, circa 2007? In that era I even remember encountering a fellow DVS/Serato user (which circa 2007 we still seemed like outliers, even though my "day" job had CDJs and even DVJs which I have encountered more or less no where else before or since) who insisted on using AIFFs (and IIRC, was still rockin a G4 PowerBook despite Intel MacBook Pros having been around for some years) and I realized that if we were the ones "pushing the edge" and there were still many deejays who were vinyl purists and hadn't even tried CDJs, let alone DVS? I kind of gave up on most deejays as innovating much of anything at all.
That wasn't always the case. Indeed, it probably still isn't but those who revel in and push technology forward are mostly outliers. There's DJ Hardrich who collaborated on the Invader Mixer (now forever a prototype) with Jesse Dean Designs and ThudRumble (DJ QBert et al) and I have affinity and personal connections with those folks (ironically, I haven't met hardrich personally, just the others); but there's also a lot of folks who glommed onto deejayin and deejay "culture" and insist on "keepin it real" by seemingly, to me, being stuck in the past? I'm not sure what is real about that? sigh* But then I routinely encounter folks who drank the Apple kool-aid hook line and sinker and are insufferable while they think their it.sh doesn't stink. ;(
DJ Abattoir (RIP) aka kma, aka Kevin Archibald I befriended via IRC in the early 1990s and he would mail me mix tapes of stuff that broadened my horizons. He was also friends with DJ Statik (of Das Bunker/Midnight★Mess) who at least for part of the time in the 1990s, worked for Pioneer and sold DJ Abattoir the first pair of CDJs I ever saw and touched. Eventually DJ Abattoir I think sold his CDJs off to Tristan von Wasserspeier whom I deejayed with in Santa Cruz circa 2005/2006 at Defiance! But even back then CDJs seemed almost transgressive among the mainstream deejays, and DVS was beyond a lot of deejays' periphery entirely. Whereas I settled on Serato (mostly because I realized that specific mixer I purchased I could also use with Traktor and Ableton Live and more; something more or less unimaginable today given all the vendor/brand in fighting), but among my peers, was also debating the relative merits of Final Scratch, Ms. Pinky (still my favorite control vinyl, at least for its era) and Traktor (which never really felt like my jamm).
I may have been too far ahead of the curve since to me at that time, it felt as if video mixin seemed as if it was going to be the next "big" thing, but very few (myself included, aside from dabbling with Serato Scratch Live's video plugin and knowing someone else who was telling me how Ms. Pinky beat Serato to that punch) ever did much with that (for reference one of the last club nights I remember acting as a VJ, I was using LaserDiscs and as happens, when deejayin, someone stole some of mine when I wasn't looking and I collect rare LaserDiscs too and I remain bitter about that).
I know that @nprofile…gygc has done some outstanding VJ sets (mostly relying on Virtual DJ I think? To say nothing of decades of avant-garde artistic collection curating that have been inspiring me ever since I was first blessed to attend House of Usher in SF in the early 1990s) but a lot of deejays these days, seem as if they have "caught up" to CDJs that don't even have CD drives in them anymore! ;) I'm still trying to push the needle forward, and mostly failing, or seeing the ripples of stuff I thought no one was paying attention to finally start to take root years/decades after I was thinking that stuff was hip.
TL;DR I don't think opus was released until 2012? By then I was already struggling to try to figure out how to make lossless video codecs more viable (spoiler: apparently I and that Dirac person I know are outliers and most people still don't care), and definitely not really paying attention to newer developments in lossy audio codecs too closely.
It's entirely possible that opus is rad!
But, I was deejayin MODs over the radio airwaves in the early 1990s with Tetsuo Shima on the WWWA Techno Jamms on 91.9FM KSPB "Radio Stevenson in Pebble Beach!" ;) and to date, I don't think I've ever encountered anything as disk space efficient and audio quality resplendent as tracker music? I guess maybe someone could take something like WavePack or Opus or Speex or whatever highly compressed lossy codec and combine it with tracker techniques and gobs of CPU and RAM to make something more impressive in some ways than MOD or S3M or whatever today?
But that was one of the charms of MODs: it didn't require gobs of CPU or RAM and still sounded incredible (well for its era at least) and as @nprofile…sus4 et al demonstrated with PT1210 (https://github.com/djh0ffman/PT1210), even capable of being pitch shifted in real time on such modest hardware. Once you start throwing compression (lossy or otherwise) into the mix, getting real-time playback is going to be a challenge (I don't even want to think about how long it took to trans-code MP3s to AIFFs on my stock Amiga 1200 anymore; but I am guessing opus trans-coding would take a spell as well?)

2FA is two factors.
A username and a passphrase are already two factors!

Well, unless SysOps turned on "paranoid mode" which then prompted for a username and a passphrase, thus: TWO factor authentication.
Whatever bull it.sh GitHub is on about again is MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) but they're too fucking stupid to use the correct terminology and since they were bought by Micro$oft they're never going to get smarter, only dumber.
I remember dealing with something similar from them a year or two ago?
I enumerated, I think as many as six, possibly seven different authentication factors?
As it stands:
1. username
2. passphrase
3. often (but not always) when attempting to login from a different IP/browser/whathaveyou it will send a "Verification Code" to the associated email address (so at least three, but maybe 4 depending on how you count)
4. SSH keys. When I checkout/clone a repository/branch/fork and push changes, it prompts me for an SSH key.
5. My SSH keys are also passphrase protected.
6. Passkeys are an option (apparently, I feel as if since I am already using no fewer than 4-5 authentication factors, adding 6 is starting to get fucking idiotic).
7. TOTP options? (That requires like: an app or a physical dongle/token, and apps also require phones, so that's really more like 8)
8. Phone numbers (which also require a phone and a subscription/service so maybe more like 9)?
I hate GitHub.
If you don't hate GitHub, I think: maybe you aren't experienced enough to understand why anyone would hate them.
But great, now I have 45 days to jump through some more bull it.sh because GitHub is staffed by absolute imbeciles apparently.

Tuesday: I got a text message and voicemail from the dealership the "new" (well, apparently as "new" as the automotive industry sells, aka "factory re-manufactured" transmission arrived) and they said they thought it would be ready on Thursday "at the latest".
Left a voicemail this morning (Friday) after not receiving any word from them yesterday. No reply today either.
Did they mean, Thursday, next week? o.O
Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying making use of mass transit.
I am really sick of hotel rooms and all the noises of shared walls; not to mention the ungodly expense.

Being an American, where crowd funding basic medical expenses has become the norm but our tax dollars routinely go to weapons for other countries waging wars we have no direct part of and most American citizens are adamantly against.

p.s. while I am not a heckler, given that I was previously Senior System Administrator for CNEMedia (aka CyberNet Entertainment Media aka Kink dot com and affiliated sites) gosh did I ever have a lot of thoughts and potential explanations in mind listening to parts of your set. The "cum-nami code" pun was pretty much in my wheelhouse too. ;) And as someone who frequents real libraries, and has even encountered a WiFi Access Point (which even I couldn't seem to restore to factory defaults) in one of those "free little libraries" because I guess it was so borked and essentially discarded (though, boxed?) you sent me with the expired medication "free little hospital" bit early in your set. Lots of great laughs, thank you again!

Ironically, I think the OpenBSD people just refer to it as "doas" not OpenDoas? ;)
OpenSSH was definitely forked from SSH.com's SSH; but due to a domain squatter, also wasn't openssh.org (though that seems to redirect to openssh.com these days).
Then there's OpenSSL, which isn't related to OpenBSD. ;)
To make matters even more confusing, these days there's even LibreTLS which is not the same as LibreSSL (which is OpenBSD related) and making it even more confusing the LibreTLS.org domain currently points to the OpenBSD Foundation website.
LibreTLS itself is basically libtls from LibreSSL, for OpenSSL users; which you can find out more about here: https://git.causal.agency/libretls/about/ the -portable branch of Game of Trees (which is OpenBSD related) makes use of it in more recent versions.
All of this as reminded me of OpenNTPD which in turn has reminded me to check to see if chrony has been updated since I last submitted a Pull Request to update the MacPort Portfile, and low and behold, it was updated in October! So I am slacking, but in my defense, I am not a listed maintainer for chrony, it has no maintainer.
Wow, I went off on some tangents.
More to do for me regardless!
