Two facts about my dog.
One he has a nostr account @npub138y…aszc.
Two he eats so much food (two large bowls for a 10 pound dog), and then every time I go into the kitchen he shows up and I have to give him something. He gets steak, salami, chicken, yellow and red peppers, pear, apple, frozen figs. And he NEVER gains weight.
Maybe it’s because his food is this organic slop from a dog food store that has no grains — he is low carb except for the fruit we occasionally give him, and it’s very small pieces at that.
Hilarious when he eats a chunk of apple or pepper because he doesn’t have molars, so he had to really clomp his jaw together to grind it down.
But the amount he consumes relative to his size without gaining any weight is astounding.

Lot of people I know look to betting markets rather than polls to handicap the election. But if Trump were assassinated, obviously that's a loss of your bet. Same as if he lost due to cheating.
So given there have been two attempts, and cheating is considered likely by many Trump supporters and presumably bettors, what would the non-cheating, non-assassination odds be?
And given that everyone knows the corporate media is in the tank, and even Google is altering search results, what would be the real, honest, fair democratic odds?
I think the answer to that is why there have been two assassination attempts so far and all the absurd lawfare that preceded them.
It's not that people love Trump (some do, but a minority). It's that we are all so sick of these sociopathic factions (pharmaceutical conglomerates, big banks, war machine, corporate media, oligarch-funded NGOs and unelected bureaucrats) forcing reviled candidates and deeply unpopular policies on us.
Very few support lockdowns, forced injections, child sex changes, censorship, wars, willful neglect of the border and inflation caused by the money printing used to pay for all of the above.
If we had any kind of democratic election where the people were given unfettered access to information, without the heavy thumbing of the scale, there is no question in my mind we'd be looking at a historic landslide.

This might sound harsh, but it’s honestly what I believe. If you don’t want to vote for Trump, I get it. He’s a douche, and he presided over lockdowns, green lighted the mRNA and didn’t do shit against the deep state despite his many promises to the contrary.
But if you are voting for Kamala Harris, at best you simply have no idea how the world works, and/or are not paying attention. I cannot take you seriously in the worldview domain. You are disqualified IMO if you are voting for her. (And it’s not really her you are voting for since she’s obviously an NPC, but google, the military, pharmaceutical and censorship industrial complexes, the corporate media, the WEF, etc.)
I’m not saying my attitude is the “correct” one to have, and I wish no ill on those who I deem to have a worthless and unconsidered worldview, but it’s just truthfully what I believe. If you advocate for her, I think you are totally uninformed and willfully so at this point. I think you are epistemically derelict.

IRS owes me a refund from 2022. Finally sent out the check in June of 2023. Still haven’t gotten it.
Called them up. Automated menus. Then finally waited on hold for 20 minutes after pressing random buttons, got a guy, wrong department. He transfers me. Another 25 minutes, get a woman.
She’s mumbling, can’t tell what the hell she Is saying, ask her to speak up, she refuses, says she’s speaking as loudly as she’s going to.
She says we can put a trace on the refund check if I want. I ask what does that do. More unintelligible mumbling. I ask what if the check arrives in two more weeks, and the trace is on, does that require me to do anything? More mumbling about forms, matching signatures and something else.
I get annoyed, say I can’t really hear you and can’t decide whether to put the trace on it because I don’t understand the consequences. It’s been 15 months since I filed for the refund (and paid my accountant an extra $400), and I’m getting frustrated.
When I’m done talking the call is still connected, but no response. Hello. Hello? Hello!!! Still connected, no response for another minute, and I hang up, figure hopefully that shit will just arrive in the next month or so since I’m overseas, and it takes a while.
No idea if she put the trace on it or not, but doubtful because I didn’t tell her too.
Get your money out of the system to the greatest extent practicable. It’s falling apart.

This is self-promotion, so I want to make that clear from the outset, not try and trick anyone into thinking I’m doing this “for the good of nostr” or any other bullshit like that.
But I wanted to say if you are interested in sports, and specifically NFL content right now, @npub1dwh…qfxe is my other account (one of them, there’s also my dog Oscar’s account @npub138y…aszc).
I say this in the context of a lot of people complaining that nostr is too bitcoin-centric and too much talk about nostr, but when you dedicate an account to something like NFL content, not many people are interested.
I don’t say this to complain or feel sorry for myself — I’m doing just fine! — but I want to bring world class NFL content to nostr, and I’d love to make it the case that the kind of content I’m providing resides only here (for free) and beyond a Substack paywall (for now). Eventually, I’d love to ditch Substack and just work for zaps, but obviously we’re not there yet.
One other fact is that growth takes time. I was a little disappointed previously about the slow growth of my substack (both the sports and non-sports ones), but lately I’ve seen a decent influx (not sure the reason), and I attribute it to just posting and podcasting consistently over time. Honest work, i.e., getting paid for adding value for people, gets rewarded, just not always immediately.
So my @npub1dwh…qfxe account is only about a year old, and I probably shouldn’t expect for it to catch on overnight. And I realize if someone is not interested in the NFL, no amount of “but it’s exclusive to nostr!” is going to get them there. So I’m gonna keep posting and pushing that account either way. Give it another year or two at least, see if it takes.
(One interesting aside is that I was thinking of scraping the sports stuff at one point to focus only on the other, more pressing real-life issues, but the prospect of doing sports on nostr swayed me to go all-in on it for another couple years. To that end, when I was in San Francisco this summer for a few days, I booked a flight to Vegas to sign up for the Circa Survivor ($10M prize) and Circa Millions ($6M in prizes) in person (which is required.) I wanted to have real skin in the game, so my posts would be in earnest, my excitement (and more likely anguish) real.
So if I win the $10M or a chunk of the $6M, that will only be because I wanted to shitpost about sports on nostr.

Convinced my wife to let me post her Lisbon guide on nostr, she was skeptical. Just now some anon (thank you!) zapped her 10K sats. I called her in, showed her the history of all the zaps she’s gotten for it (more than 20K now), and she was impressed.
I told her, she’d have to update it every six months or so to keep it current but that it would sit there forever, and the zaps would come in indefinitely, and she thought it was very cool.
This is the future.

We were in a resort, two hours outside of Mendoza for nine days (partly due to my wife’s work event) and then in Buenos Aires for five days. Trip was really good. The resort was comped and very high end, but the highlight was going up into the Andes and letting my daughter play in the snow.
Buenos Aires is a beautiful city — very cosmopolitan, looks like New York in places, but without the insane prices. People are very nice. Used to have a lot of crime, but seemed safer this time.

Was talking to my wife about Portugal. Right now it’s in a sweet spot of not very authoritarian — government doesn’t bother you, people mostly keep to themselves, are not busybodies — and also very safe. How long it will stay that way, I have no idea.
The EU is a scourge, and Portugal is beholden to it, but Portugal is economically insignificant and geographically isolated (only country it borders is Spain.) And crime could always get worse, but I don’t see a lot of sketchy/openly insane people when I walk around the way I did in San Francisco and Denver this summer.

I don’t care about Monero per se, but what other words will go missing from my feed if a developer doesn’t like them?
I guess if a client wanted to reduce spam it would block various words, but should be opt-in rather than default IMO. You opt-in and easily check the updated list of blocked words. And if the client goes too far, you dump it for another.
But very dangerous to have it done behind the scenes without the users knowing.

Right you always start with common ground and build from there. I think it’s easy to write everyone off as brainwashed or whatever, but I think only 10-20 percent are truly brainwashed, and most people are just responding to incentives which are changeable. Even better is if it dawns on them that the highest incentive is to sense-make for oneself.

I think there are a lot of half awake people who realize something is deeply wrong, but are pushed by incentives not to awaken fully. My strategy is to push in the other direction, make them realize they are making a bad bet. People don’t respond to moral chastising, but they do respond to being shown what they’re doing is bad for them, counter to their aims of fitting in, not getting hassled.

Finally back home in Lisbon after two weeks in Argentina, took the 12th and final flight of the last two months back from Madrid.
If it weren’t for my wife, I’d probably still be planted on my sofa in LA — I’m an ideas guy, I don’t *do* shit.
And yet, it was my idea to go to Argentina and also to drive through the south of the US this summer.
Portugal is a nice place, but they are beholden to the EU, which is up to no good. If things go south, you want to have some outs.
This is essentially the thesis of The Sovereign Individual — that jurisdictions that treat people poorly will lose those people, are while the backlash from the now-powerful ones will be ugly, they will ultimately lose that battle and have to capitulate once people start exiting en masse.
We’re not leaving here imminently, but if it went bad, Buenos Aires is an amazing city, the people are kind and there seems to be a (very tempered) hope that things are turning around, even though they’re struggling as Millei seems to be facing reality rather than printing them into more debt.

Every election I can remember, the more charismatic person won except the last one: Reagan over Carter/Mondale, Bush over Dukakis, Clinton over Bush/Dole, Bush over Gore/Kerry, Obama over McCain/Romney, Trump over Hillary. Only exception was Biden over Trump, and there were serious irregularities around it.
Forget politics, and just ask yourself if there's ever been a bigger gap in charisma/personability than in this election. Then consider the economy which just massively revised down its jobs report for the last year, with inflation crushing the ever-shrinking middle class.
The fundamentals are terrible for the democrats. The indicators (polls/betting markets) say otherwise, but in an era of so much manipulation and fraud, fundamentals > indicators IMO.

Similar experience — maybe worse — helping my 87 YO uncle set up automatic payments from their joint Chase account to his wife’s nursing home. After much of the same BS as below, got in, set up autopay, seemed to take but was rejected the next day. Did this SIX times, one of which was his local (in person) banker doing it herself, still rejected.
And his 2FA was to his land line so every time, we had to hang up for him to get the code and call back.
Eventually gave up, moved the funds to a different bank which they also wouldn’t do online, so he had to pick up a cashier’s check and drive it to the new bank.

New conspiracy theory — variant of this earlier one.
They had to get rid of Biden but couldn’t get Kamala to quit, so they let her have the nomination (for now — and maybe that entitled them to the funding), but they know she can’t win and are now angling to replace her with someone they prefer.
Remember, polls are fake, news is fake, even betting markets can be manipulated. In such cases, always look to fundamentals which are twofold: (1) The economy sucks — inflation is crushing people; and (2) Unlike say Obama or Bill Clinton, who, no matter what you think of them were both gifted politicians, she sucks at this game.
So bad politician, bad economy. The polls are fake, the betting markets are manipulated.
They are already attacking her over her preposterous economic proposals in the Washington Post. Doubt the Post would have permission to do that unless the word was out.
In the end, they had to replace both Kamala and Biden — it was the only way to pull with in cheating range IMO.

I think “standing behind your chair” as the counter example is already a win for censorship resistance. Way more resources and risky than your boss just telling you to delete or your fired or the government doing the same.
The goal of censorship resistance should be to vastly increase the costs of stopping speech. They tell you to delete it, and you say it’s on relays all over the world now that you don’t control. Too bad!

Problem with being able to delete is governments can say — “this is misinformation, delete.” No longer censorship resistant in that case.
But you could maybe have a separate category for shitposts that you don’t care about making censorship resistant. But nostr being deletable is like bitcoin transactions being revocable.

Actually think the impossibility of deleting notes on nostr is a net positive for people who worry about posting things they might later regret.
If you post something on Twitter and later regret it, you can delete, but if someone screenshots it, you’re screwed. So you have people posting recklessly because they have this out, and it turns out, actually no, they’re on the hook anyway.
But with nostr, you don’t have that out, so you will be more careful. Over the long run, you will post fewer things you regret.
(Personally anything I put on the web (email, text, social media, etc.) I assume will eventually become public.
Consequently, I only tell the really really dark, super wrong jokes in person to based people I trust.

The inability to delete posts has two main implications — (1) censorship resistance; and (2) the need for care before posting. Just like the inability to reverse bitcoin transactions has implications for care and op sec in using that protocol.
I understand there are particular situations where we wish we could undo the “send” for both protocols (if you’re robbed, e.g.). But final settlement and inability to delete is a feature IMO, not a bug.
Everything goes on your permanent record, and that’s okay. Freedom means freedom, not freedom only if I didn’t say the wrong thing five years ago.
Use freedom tech to re-negotiate on our terms, not those of the censor.

That's only the case in the US and EU where Assange and Snowden got got, but everyone else can mostly keep their heads down and be fine. In autocratic countries, tens of millions who kept their heads down were murdered.

Alternative POV: your permanent *speech* record is unimportant. Speech is not action, and there’s nothing you could say on nostr that isn’t protected by the First Amendment.
But what about the UK, or even the US apparatchiks like Tim Walz who want to criminalize dissent as “misinformation?” Surely it’s dangerous to say things on nostr that might one day be connected to your real life identity?
No it is not. If some communist is going to get you for saying Kamala Harris is a moron, then they will get you for anything or nothing at all. The day I can be arrested for my nostr posts, the answer will not be to hide in anonymity and hope someone else — someone dumb enough to attach his real identity or unlucky enough to have his keys compromised — gets got instead.
I really don’t like the ethos of: “Oh no, I can’t pretend I didn’t say what I said!”
How about:
"I said what I fucking said because I earnestly believed it at the time, and I either stand by it now or I realize I was in error and I no longer stand by it, though it was said in earnest, and it was an honest mistake."
The people who are worried they’ll be arrested for free speech don’t really believe in free speech. The people who will only say what they truly believe anonymously don’t really believe in free speech.
They believe one *should* have the right to free speech in an ideal society, but in the present one it doesn’t exist and therefore they won’t avail themselves of it.
But your rights don’t come from society. They come from nature, God, the Tao, whatever.
If you believe in free speech, you use it. And yes, I get it, if you’re in North Korea, you wouldn’t, and that’s fine. But if you’re intimidated by speaking the truth because you might get found out, God forbid, for earnestly expressing yourself by the UK loser police, you are not really for free speech. Not when it has even a small risk, a small cost.
So if you want free speech to exist, speak freely, stop fomenting fear, have courage.
