We are now 2 years in to Bhutan's Bitcoin Strategic Reserve experiment.
That means we now hae some good data on how it has affected the economy.
For context: Bhutan have formed a large Bitcoin Strategic Reserve by using their surplus renewable hydropower to mine Bitcoin.
The IMF warned that nations embracing Bitcoin would destabilize their economy, be less effective at attracting foreign direct investment, and endanger their decarbonizing and environmental initiatives.
What does the data say:
1. Bhutan's Bitcoin Strategic Reserve has directly addressed pressing fiscal needs. "In June 2023, Bhutan allocated $72 million from its holdings to finance a 50% salary increase for civil servants"
2. Bhutan was able to "use Bitcoin reserves to avert a crisis as foreign currency reserves dwindled to $689 million"
3. Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay in an interview said that bitcoin also "supports free healthcare and environmental projects"
4. Tobgay also said their Bitcoin reserves helped in "stabilizing [the nation’s] $3.5 billion economy"
5. Independent analysts have now said that "this model could attract foreign investment, particularly for nations with untapped renewable resources"
Considering how the IMF analysis was not just wrong, but roughly 180° off target, it begs the question, was the IMF's predictions ever based on data?
Or maybe they just possibly had another agenda in predicting the adverse impact of any nation embracing Bitcoin?

A few people have pointed out the latest bitcoin mining article from CNN. I have seen it. Reposting my rebuttal here
Open letter to Elizabeth McBride at @CNN
regarding today's article on Bitcoin Mining https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/03/climate/crypto-mining-renewables-electricity-shortage/index.html
The piece you wrote on Bitcoin Mining this morning perpetuates some unbalanced, and in some cases outright false, claims.
Further, the article makes a series of claims and inferences that are not supported by the scientific consensus (14 of the last 16 articles on Bitcoin and energy show strong environmental benefits, none of which you acknowledge). Instead you engage in what can at best be described as “selective reporting”, including.
1. Reported on how Bitcoin mining was used in a rogue way in Abkhazia, which allegedly caused grid destabilization, but didn't acknowledge that this is an anomaly, with Bitcoin mining having been embraced by both grid operators and in academic research as a critical tool for stabilizing the grid. For example, a whitepaper from Energy Experts at Duke University concluded that Controllable Load Resources (aka: Bitcoin mining) help to stabilize grids, and decarbonize grids. Lai et al states that Bitcoin mining can “balance the electrical grid” https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acssuschemeng.3c05445 Ibañez et al concludes “PoW mining emerges as an alternative that can provide additional income and ancillary services (auxiliary services designed to provide stability to the energy grid)” https://www.mdpi.com/2078-1547/14/3/35 Menati et al found that “the flexibility of cryptocurrency mining loads plays a pivotal role in the reliability of electricity systems and the stability of electricity markets” and “cryptocurrency mining …is shown not to be detrimental to power grid reliability even with significant amounts at certain locations.” https://https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S266679242300015X
Why did you include none of this body of evidence in your article? Was it because you were unaware of it - or simply because it didn't support the story you wished to advance?
2. Advanced the (previously debunked) implication that Bitcoin mining takes renewable energy away from other operators. It doesn't.
Bitcoin mining because of its economic incentives to use cheap power is, as former ERCOT Grid operator Brad Jones attested, a “non-rival energy user”. In other words, it “powers down when the price of power becomes too expensive; the very time other people want/need that power. In fact, the opposite is true with many cases arising of people who have access to renewable energy who otherwise would not have as a direct result of Bitcoin mining. For example, Gridless in Africa has delivered renewable energy to four villages, while on a much bigger scale in Ethiopia, Bitcoin mining is helping accelerate the building of transmission lines to deliver renewable energy to people. Again, why did you include none of this context?
3. Strong Evidence of Non-investigative reporting
While you interviewed the CEO of MARA, you'd clearly already formed the basis of the piece you wanted to write before you contacted him, using the interview merely as a source of rebuttal from known Bitcoin antagonist Mandy deRoche.
Mandy is neither a Bitcoin mining expert, nor an energy expert. She is a paid Earthjustice anti-Bitcoin campaigner.
4. Cherry picking data
While Russia does indeed have mainly fossil fuels, your article makes no mention of the fact that Bitcoin is now powered 52.6% by sustainable energy sources (Bloomberg Intelligence, 2023).
5. Error by omission
You excluded a large body of research showing that far from "taking renewable energy away" from people, Bitcoin plays an important role in accelerating the green energy transition, which makes more renewable energy available to more people.
This finding is supported by numerous peer reviewed studies which found that Bitcoin mining enables halving of the payback time for solar farms (Hakimi et al, 2024) accelerating the renewable energy transition (Lal et al, 2003) accelerating renewable microgrid development (Moghimi et al 2024)
Incidentally, Bitcoin mining has also been shown to help reduce methane emissions (Sechrest et al, 2024) and obviate the need for gas peaker plants (Bruno et al, 2023) In forming your perspective on Bitcoin mining, why did you ignore this body of facts, and instead rely on a single anti-Bitcoin lobbyist's opinion ? Is this not akin to ignoring the scientific consensus on climate change and writing an article based on the opinions of a single oil industry lobbyist?
Summary
Overall, its a bit of a throwback of an article, the likes of which we used to see more of in 2021-22 before most of the mainstream media became aware of the shift in the scientific consensus around Bitcoin mining and its (largely positive) enviromental impact. Indeed, even sustainability focused media including Anthropocene, Renewables Now and Renewable Energy Magazine now report 90% on the environmental benefits of Bitcoin mining.

I would suggest you take time to research Bitcoin more thoroughly next time before you write about it, rather than relying on the opinions of paid lobbyists from Earthjustice.

My perspective is one of a climatetech investor who saw over 200 different climatetech propositions, but saw in Bitcoin mining the ability to mitigate multiple environmental challenges at one time.
This sort of non-evidence based, or selective-evidence based, reporting is counterproductive to the efforts of many environmental pragmatists who are working hard to accelerate the advancement of renewable energy using Bitcoin mining.

And … another negative Bitcoin mining article rescinded!
This one was from Environment California I pointed out the sources they used are discredited (with evidence) and that they omitted many known environmental benefits To their credit, they took the article down immediately
For context: for the last two years, each morning I do a search on who's written a hitpiece criticizing Bitcoin's environmental track record. Depending on the article, I either write a rebuttal and post it on LinkedIn/ Twitter, or write directly to the author to see if they are open to learning, or both.
Over the years, there have been some good successes. One journalist did a complete 180, and now is a co-writer of my newsletter. Others amended. Several have rescind. Most dug their heals in, but in almost all cases that was the last negative article on Bitcoin they ever wrote. Many of them got community noted, ratiod, one even deleted his profile from twitter.
My intention was threefold
1. Educate and get a retraction and/or a followup piece citing the positive environmental benefits of bitcoin, where there was high openness
2. Educate with an amendment to the article where there was some openness
3. Where there was no openness to learning, make it very clear that writing nonsense about Bitcoin would be held to account, publicly, so that the author did not repeat the offence. The strategy seems to be working, because the volume of environmental FUD about bitcoin is decreasing and none of the journalists I rebutted over the last two years wrote another piece on bitcoin and energy after their original piece/series.
Why do I do this?
Well, when misinformation is spread about Bitcoin, it hurts the Bitcoin mining industry, it slows Bitcoin adoption, but it also stops innovation in the energy sector. It also perpetuates the unnecessary practice of wasting stranded energy, flaring gas, venting landfill emissions and using gas peaker plants rather than Bitcoin mining to stabilize grids.

Imagine not just watching the first country on a Bitcoin standard emerge, but being able to say years later "I was there, I was part of the team that did it."

Why this matters: We have a once in a generation shot of creating a country that runs on a Bitcoin standard. If we miss the Suriname opportunity, another one that fits the profile (small, developing world, Central Bank is just a fiat wallet with no monetary policy function) may not come along for another 10 years.
Why that matters: Without a working example of a small country which has moved to a Bitcoin standard, larger nations will be too scared to follow.
Why I know I'm right about this: I grew up in NZ (another small country) in the 1980s when was first in the world to deregulate energy, telco and financial markets, fully float the dollar and lower the inflation target to 2%. The rest of the world quickly followed. Sadly, NZ no longer has the same bold political leadership, that epicenter has moved to a small handful of nations in Africa and Latin America, such as El Salvador, and Suriname.
But El Salvador has not and is not in a position to progress their Bitcoin revolution to a full Bitcoin standard. They are not in a position to remove their central bank, or replace their dollarized currency with Bitcoin. Suriname is.
I regard the work Maya is doing in Suriname right now as one of the most important projects we can dedicate our time and energy to. If you have a skill in organising, campaigning or just are really good at execution, reach out to her.
It won't be easy. That which is worthwhile seldom is. And I can't promise that your efforts will bear fruit, but if a shot at tangibly changing the course of not just Bitcoin history, but history, appeals you won't think twice about it.

Oh yes. That’s the worst thing in coffee for sure, and a great habit to replace. I replaced it with tropical fruits, stevia and a generally more savoury-focused diet. Tasty and easy.
Some research came out a few years ago showing that sugar even halves your immune system effectiveness for up to 2 hours after taking it!

Someone just tried to give up coffee, without success.
Here’s my take on that. There’s nothing wrong with coffee. However if you’re having it for the energy it gives you, I’ve found there are more effective ways to get that energy. When it comes to habits, replacing a habit is much more likely to work (feels like evolution) than removing one (feels like self-denial)
There are 4 sources of energy (I’m talking the energy a human feels, not kWhs!)
1. Food
2. Sleep
3. Breath
4. Knowledge/ a calm state of mind
Of these, the most unexplored and the most impactful I’ve found is the breath.
I stopped having coffee (and other stimulants) after starting a daily practice of breathing exercises. It wasn’t even a big deal or an effort. I just found I didn’t need it. From time to time - maybe once a year I might have a coffee because I like the taste, and the aroma, and when I do, I really enjoy and savor it. But I no longer need it. I don’t crave it.
For me, a critical pet of freedom is reducing and removing what I feel I “need”. Freedom for me means there is nothing and no one in life that has control over me. If I need, or believe I need, anything or anyone outside of myself, then I am not free.
Anyway, the particular breathing practice I found most effective after trialling a few was SKY breathing, as taught by the Art of Living foundation. Back in 2007 I completed my training to be able to teach this technique to others, and as a volunteer in my spare time just recently completed the 100th course. I was fortunate enough to discover the technique by accident more than 20 years ago, before breathing practices were fashionable. But I just did a quick search and found that it’s now had over 100 papers published on its heath and well-being benefits.

“To know and not to do is not to know”
10 years ago I made a life-changing decision.
I was coaching the leaders and sales teams of large corporates. I’d worked with major corporates including most of the country’s largest banks and Telcos. But a big shift was about to happen.
I never forget the moment. I was in the office of the L&D Manager of one of those corporates. He asked if we could come back and do some “refresher” sales training. For context, 2 years earlier, we’d run a 5-day sales and mindset training session that had yielded exceptional sales results and won a number of awards.
“So what happened after that sales training?” I asked. As an associate, I didn’t see the long term results. Nor did the company that provided the training specialise in embedding change: it doesn’t fit the business model of most training companies because each day you book out time for an hour long piece of coaching is a day you can’t book them out as a trainer at a much higher rate.
He shuffled in his seat a little uncomfortably. “Well”, he proffered. “We had great intentions, and don’t get me wrong, the uplift in sales was enough to pay for all your training easily. But after a few months people started going back to their old habits, and those people who were supposed to support the changes got deployed onto new projects. So that’s why we thought some refresher training would be timely.”
Within 6 months, I’d stopped all corporate training. My last illusion that I was creating any lasting impact had been removed. I was grateful to him for shattering my illusion.
I knew what I wanted to do, but I had no idea how to do it.
But then I realized I did know what to do. It was to do something I’d already done that had worked.
While corporate training wasn’t my life’s purpose, it was rewarding because I learnt a lot of skills that I was able to repurpose into my own coaching years later. Plus the many hours of facilitating helped me hone my craft. Kind of like the Beatles playing Hamburg gigs before they took the world stage.
I had only gotten that far in the first place because after leaving my corporate job, I got my own coach who helped me get into doing what would eventually become my life’s work.
So I used the same strategy. I got a coach to help me get out of corporate training, and into whatever I wanted to do - even though I wasn’t sure what that was.
One of the first questions she asked was “Who do you really want to work with”. At the time it was technology entrepreneurs (and that still is one of the communities of people I serve). But what I said was “Tech entrepreneurs, but there’s no business model doing that. They are cash-strapped startups”. She smiled. She challenged my limiting beliefs. And we built a new model that brought top coaching (not just mentoring) for the first time in the world to founders of early stage tech companies. That decision to get a coach, doing something I already knew worked, changed the direction of my life and that of many others I coached. And because they consistently applied what they learned, they never needed “refresher” training.
Sometimes we fail to use the same strategies that have worked for us in the past, believing that we need to continually create new strategies. Not so. Much of the work I do with clients involves mining their experience for things they have already done and stopped, or are doing inconsistently, and making those winning strategies they already know both contemporary and consistent.
The results have been incredible. If you want more peace, and you’ve already experienced it through meditation, restart meditating. If you want to feel more energy on a daily basis and already know that when you exercise regularly you feel more energy, recommit to daily exercise. If you have a dream you haven’t watered for a while, but you already know that when you give attention to it daily it grows, start giving it your daily attention again. And if you know that doing this with a coach creates faster, more consistent results, get a coach.
The ego loves complexity. The mind loves what’s new. But most of our answers are found in the simple application of the already-known. To know and not to do is not to know.

The time has come for the silent Bitcoiners in the cubicles of corporate life, in the halls of academia, in the office blocks, in the news media rooms, and in the corridors of power to show your colors.
Today, Troy Cross and Andrew Perkins published a seminal report showing us beyond doubt that Bitcoin cuts right across the political spectrum. It is a tool for everyone.
Why did this surprise us? Perhaps because some have remained silent. Silent through fear of what showing their true (orange) colors would mean.
I faced a similar fear years ago. I almost stayed silent too. And it almost cost me my freedom.
I wanted to be an actor when I grew up. But I got married early, and in my early 20s while I was doing postgraduate study I had kids. It was like a switch flicked in my brain. I suddenly started thinking about “earning a living” for the first time in my life. I had an Arts Degree and a Diploma in Drama, yet I ended up as a software developer for an early Internet startup.
The whole time I was in the IT industry I felt like a fraud. I felt I was only there because I needed to support a family, but my real passion remained acting.
Years later I started my own tech company which did quite well, then after that I left to start coaching technology entrepreneurs. I wasn’t working directly with technology, but I wasn’t following my passion either.
My coach picked up on it and asked “what do you really want to do this next retreat you’re running for these CEOs?”
I sheepishly admitted “I’d like to do theatre improvisation with them” then quickly added “But I know that I could never do that.”
“Why?” he challenged, as any good coach should
“Come on coach” I said “These are highly left brain analytical engineers and tech gurus. There’s no way they’ll be into improv. They’ll think its weird. It’s a super high risk move, and it could ruin my credibility with a bunch of people I’ve been slowly building up respect with”
He paused and said “What if that’s what everyone has been assuming, but their being left brain dominant is exactly why they need improv?
"Daniel, they trust you. That’s why they’re part of your group. If you love it, they will love it. And I bet its exactly what they’ve been crying out for.
"Besides, you’re encouraging them to take bold moves as entrepreneurs right?"
“Absolutely” I replied
“Well what sort of chance have they got if their leader doesn’t role model to them what that looks like?”
He had me. So, nervously I started planning to do theatre improv with them. Not “give them a book on improv” like some Silicon Valley companies do, but actually do full on body-contact improv like crazy acting students do.
I never forget our first session. We could not stop laughing. I saw a whole new side of them. They saw a new side of themselves. Even the wife of one of them thanked me for the change in her husband.
Not only did we have outrageous fun, but the results of the creative exercises we did flowed directly and measurably into the boldness and creativity of their subsequent business decisions and conversations.
Still to this day, the one thing past entrepreneurs say is “Man I miss improv”.
And … I had a blast too. For the first time I’d found a way to integrate my love of acting into my work as a coach, in a way that enriched the lives of others beyond entertainment.
A part of me would have remained forever unexpressed, unintegrated had it not been for the encouragement of my coach to come forth and declare my true colors.
I'm forever grateful to him.
Today, I encourage you as a Bitcoiner to do the same, as my coach once did. Not because it will help Bitcoin. But because it will help you. It will help you feel more full, more authentic. It will be like a deep outbreath you've been longing to take. And like me, the fear you feel is proportional to the breakthrough on the other side.
Fear is an acronym for “False evidence appearing real”. All those fears I had of how people would react were completely unfounded. The truth was, it was my ego that would scared of “what would people think of me” that was keeping me playing safe and playing small. As a result it was denying both others, and me of growth, and of joy.
I was at the decision point where I could listen to my ego … or I could grow. I could only choose one path.
So those fears of how people will judge you declaring you are a Bitcoiner, how do you know? If people judge, so what? Look back to other times you’ve spoken up for what you believed in. How many times did others thank you for your leadership? And even if they don’t - so what?
As Bitcoiners we talk a lot about freedom. But Bitcoin cannot free you. No technology can. Bitcoin is merely the catalyst that brings you to the point where freedom is possible. But the act to choose freedom is yours and yours alone. If you live in fear of what others may think, you are not free. Conversely, the moment you decide to step forth and bring forth what you believe in, whether it is improv … or Bitcoin - you become free.
The stage is waiting.
The time is ripe.
Show your true colors.
Speak your truth.
And then share with others how you can’t believe you waited so long.

A short story about letting go, Bitcoin, and fate.
How did this happen ???
Today, I'm living in Costa Rica, consulting to some of the world's top Bitcoin companies, asked to speak at conferences around the world on Bitcoin mining, and regarded as one of the key forces behind the narrative shift on Bitcoin and the environment.
Til now, I've not shared the story of how this happened.
My ego would love to say "I planned it", or say it was because of some special unique qualities in me. Neither are true. Sure I'm pretty good at analysing data. I'm also pretty good at communicating it back to people in a way that's meaningful.
But there are people much better at both of those things than me. So here's what really happened.
It was lock-down 3.0, 2020. Unable to go anywhere or do much, I went on an online meditation retreat. During that retreat I got an insight "reconnect with your friend Willy".
I did. It turned out in the 5 years since we'd chatted, he'd become a globally respected Bitcoin analyst. We chatted like no time had passed. I asked how he'd made the shift from running tech companies to researching Bitcoin. He shared his story "I had 2 months spare, and a burning question about Bitcoin, and I just kept researching it until I got the answer."
Because of that, this happened. It was early 2022. Bitcoin was getting hammered in the press for its environmental impact. It was reported to have been banned in China, and Telsa had ditched it, both citing environmental concerns. I held a small amount, and was on the point of ditching it too.
But just before I did, I had a chance conversation with Vlatko, an environmentalist entrepreneur who'd started a climatetech company I'd invested in. He suggested I research it deeper before making the decision.
As I sat down to meditate that evening, Willy's words invaded my tranquility "I had 2 months spare, and a burning question about Bitcoin, and I just kept researching it until I got the answer."
That's when the second insight came: I needed to do the same.
I cleared my diary and did something I'd never done: I researched for no other purpose than to get an answer. I worked long hours. I didn't eat much. I lost weight. I hunted down every piece of data I could about renewable energy, how grids worked, climate change, methane mitigation, Bitcoin mining, Bitcoin mining economics. I read the articles for and against Bitcoin.
Then I spoke to renewable energy engineers, people actually doing Bitcoin mining, climate scientists, and grid experts. I extrapolated trendlines. I drew charts. I tested theories. I questioned sources.
Everything led to the same conclusion: Bitcoin mining, as with other disruptive technologies in their first years, had been poorly understood (and on occasions gaslit), yet it would likely follow the same trend as solar to become a net positive to the environment.
In fact not only that, it had the potential to become the most fast-acting form of climatetech the world had seen. All the other technologies we were investing in would have an impact after 2030. But this could have a substantial positive impact immediately on reducing methane emissions and building out the grid renewably.
Then something unexpected happened: the week after I finished my research, GreenpeaceUSA kicked off an environmental campaign against Bitcoin.
As a subscriber to Greenpeace, and someone who'd participated in actions with them shoulder to shoulder I was surprised. So I read the logic behind their campaign to see what they had discovered that I might have missed.
My heart sank.
They quoted studies that had been debunked, and were taking a one-sided view. It was clear they had not done even 5% of the research I just had, but rather had relied for the most part on some questionable accounts written by mainstream journalists, and the work of a certain central bank employee who’s models I had found lacked scientific integrity.
I felt this strong intuitive voice inside me say “you should write a response”. Logically I didn’t see any point. I had no active followers to speak of. And the last time I’d used Twitter was a decade ago where I would regularly get one “like” per ten tweets if I was lucky.
So I wrote a response on Twitter. I pointing out the errors in GreenpeaceUSA’s messaging. That one tweet changed everything. The post received over 600,000 views. I was asked to appear on two podcasts, and I was instantly connected to a global community of environmentalists, climate scientists, philosophers and renewable energy experts I didn’t know existed who, like me, had researched Bitcoin really thoroughly and realized it was an environmental net-positive.
There was one thing that sat uncomfortably with me though. Bitcoin was, or seemed to be, using a disproportionately high amount of fossil fuel. This made me reluctant to advocate too strongly for Bitcoin mining. But then, another intuition came: a very precise intuition “The Cambridge model that everyone relies on is not factoring in offgrid mining. That’s causing it to overstate how much fossil fuel Bitcoin uses.”
Yes, it wasn’t brilliant analysis, or research. It was a simple intuition I had that I followed. I still remember sharing “the Cambridge model does not factor in offgrid mining” with a twitter group I was part of. It was an out-of-character thing for me to say.
I had no evidence for this statement. But I shared it nonetheless. And thank goodness I did. A day later, a member of that group said “You’re right”.
He’d trawled through the Cambridge website and found in the fineprint of their methodology section an acknowledgement that offgrid mining was excluded. But not only that, they also excluded “methane mitigation”.
I was amazed. Buoyed by the fact my intuition had been accurate, I decided to do something crazy, that I never would have done if I’d known how much work was involved.
I decided to build a ground-up transparent model of Bitcoin mining, which used their data as a starting point, but addressed their inaccuracies.
This work required me to hunt down as many bitcoin mining companies as I could and validate their hashrate, power consumption and renewable energy mix. There was no shortcut, just a huge amount of phonecalls, surveys, emails and cross-validation.
Along the way, I made other discoveries about Bitcoin mining, how it was helping stabilize grids, reducing electricity costs through monetizing wasted renewable energy and just how much methane it was mitigating too.
I spent the bulk of each day for two years building the model and publishing what I was finding on Twitter. The response was overwhelming.
I was invited to speak at conferences and write articles. Michael Saylor started quoting my research. Leaders in the industry invited me to their podcasts. I had to start turning down ⅔ of all conference invitations, and podcast invitations. It was amazing, yet at the same time it meant that for two years I received very little income.
This was supposed to take two months, not two years. This was crazy. While I was flattered by the level of outreach, I couldn’t feed a family on podcast invites. And I hadn’t been looking for new coaching clients for ages, so while the work I was doing was some of my best ever, that lack of new outreach meant my business naturally started to atrophy. What was I supposed to do? My intellect was screaming "stop working for free". Yet I kept on doing more unpaid work, with most of my time split between Bitcoin research, and running volunteer breathing and meditation programs and followups for the The Art of Living.
Again my intuition, which was virtually yelling at me so as to be heard above my intellect, kept cajoling and encouraging: “Keep going. Don’t stop”
Eventually I finished, and to my great surprise, the model is now used in preference to Cambridge’s model by most institutions now, including numerous AI engines!
The shock is not that people find merits in the model: I know it is a more accurate model to Cambridge’s. My surprise is that so many other people would adopt it over such an established institution. I still don’t know how this happened.
Along the way, I’d also realized that my third climate tech fund had to involve Bitcoin mining on landfills: my research was showing me that the emissions mitigated per dollar invested were crazy: 45x more emission reducing than investing in solar infrastructure, and capable of good yields for wholesale investors also.
Problem was, I was in the wrong country for international business. With my business partners in the States, and landfill projects in LATAM, it was time to move. My wife was incredibly supportive, and my daughters were up for the adventure, so we relocated to Costa Rica.
Then the miraculous happened: my two worlds started to collide. A single tweet asking for some advice from the community on twitter led to the unintended, yet much appreciated, consequence of work offers within the bitcoin ecosystem.
I was offered an advisory role at a large publicly listed mining company, a research role at another company, and a job helping create a Bitcoin mining video to be sent to regulators the world round. Then Lisa Hough said to me “you’ve got a gift coaching people. Have you thought of coaching Bitcoin companies?” Remarkably I hadn’t. Yet it was so obvious.
One tweet later, a number of founders of Bitcoin companies enrolled to get coaching on gaining investment, growing their company, or navigating the challenges that come with running your own tech firm.
I don’t know what will happen next. I had no plan when I started all this, and I still don’t - other than to keep listening to the intuitive pull, and to keep meditating so that the stray messages get filtered out so I can hear that voice clearly.
But I have felt another intuition: “Bitcoin price is being suppressed because Sovereign Wealth Funds can’t adopt it. They can’t adopt it because their ESG investment committees are blocking it. You should talk to them and help them change their minds.”
Again I did some research, and again this intuition was right. A youtube video of Kevin O’Leary on What Bitcoin Did randomly appeared on my Youtube list that same night. I watched in awe as Kevin O’Leary confirmed every word of this intuition, and then some.
So apparently I’m going to start talking to Sovereign Funds and Pension Funds? I have no idea when and how. But that’s not my business to try and figure out. And any ideas I could figure out would be inferior to the divine plan.
I’m simply listening to a wisdom higher than my own, and beyond what I could have done through my intellect or my experiences. When president Nayib Bukele who has performed a social and economic miracle in El Salvador was interviewed recently he was asked about his economic plan for his country. With a twinkle in his eye he smiled and said “First, seek God’s wisdom”.
I found myself nodding my head. I knew what he meant. Whatever name we give to the power beyond us, we are not the doer, and knowing this opens us up to receive ideas beyond the conception of the rational mind.

Reflecting about intentions today. Here’s what strikes me
99.9% of intentions (to have a certain job, to go on this holiday, to have this relationship, to improve our body in some way, to create this project that positively impacts the lives of others) are formed from our experiences.
But our experiences are limited.
Therefore 99.9% of intentions are limited too.
This is why, even if they manifest, we do not feel free.
Faith is where our intentions are not conceived from our experiences.
The known is a shadow which shrouds the unknown from becoming seen.
Faith is love of the unknown.
The prayer of the faithful is “may my path be illuminated with the light of the unknown”

The bitcoin community is incredible.
I’m involved in so many collaborations right now. Most of them with people I’ve never met in person, only thru nostr or X.
The people I’ve met and have ongoing collaborations with include
- my business partner at CH4Capital, a fund that invests in bitcoin mining on landfills
- a group of German scientists who I’m writing a bitcoin mining paper on
- a group of engineers and researchers who have formed the Digital Assets Research Institute (www.da-ri.org)
- 2 bitcoin mining companies (one as an advisor, one producing research and content)
- 4 founders of bitcoin companies & bitcoin hedge funds that I’m coaching and helping to raise investment
- a group of small bitcoin mining companies I’m helping form collaborations with larger companies so they can leverage their access to capital markets and bulk purchasing power
- a group of larger bitcoin mining companies who I’m helping find sites for new bitcoin mining projects.
How is all this possible?
The simple answer is that in any other industry it would be Impossible. It would take too long to find the builders and ninjas. It would take too long to build trust.
Yet my experience in the bitcoin community is the exact opposite.
- There’s a massively high ratio of builders and ninjas.
- People are motivated by a mission bigger than them, which means ego is relatively low, and discretionary effort is very high
- people are by definition sharp critical thinkers. Which means I constantly feel surrounded by kindred spirits.
It’s spiritually uplifting, and that means that each new project creates energy rather than taking energy.
It’s also why bitcoin is unstoppable. It’s not just the superior architecture, the decentralised peer-to-peer protocol or the proof of work algorithm, although all those structures are absolutely necessary.
It’s the fact that on top of those structures are standing some of the most committed and generous people I’ve ever stood shoulder to shoulder next to.
Of the vast majority of people I’ve met, they are not talking about what they can get. They are talking about what they can give.
Imagine a whole society of peers like that?
I’m lucky that this is not such a stretch or such a dream for me any more.
As John Lennon once wrote “you may say I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one”.
As someone who never aspired to material acquisition, for whom the life of mortgage debt servitude and deadbeat jobs always seemed crazy, as someone who was offended by a system where you could get money simply by being close to the money and adding nothing productive in the process, yet who often felt alone for people the only person in the room who felt this way - it’s been a relief to find there are other people as crazy as me who dare to challenge their received wisdoms and dare dream that there is another way.

Paid or free?
If you value serving others above all else, its always a nuanced question to answer.
At my first software company, we had the same dilemma. In the end, we created a paid version of our software (a niche product for molecular biologists). It was the right move, and we could not have sold to a larger buyer years later without it.
Because of that I gained more street-cred to help more tech founders as a coach, and make more of a difference. This year I had the same dilemma.
I started a newsletter. It got great feedback. But then ... First, the guy I wrote it with turned on an option to voluntarily pay. I wasn't sure, but thought "OK let's try it and see. To my surprise, many people took that option.
Because of that I was able to pay him, which has helped him get one step closer to his dream to get a job inside the Bitcoin ecosystem. Then something I didn't expect happened. 2 subscribers challenged me on why I was still even giving the option of free, saying it was "paid content quality" and making it free devalued it. Whenever I'm unsure of something, I like to run experiments.
So ... I decided to run an experiment and announce I was ending the free subscription period in a couple of months.
Immediately a group of people subscribed.
Because of that, I had the resources to fire up another Bitcoin project: launch http://Da-ri.org: an institution grade site aimed at showing the world, particularly the world's sovereign wealth funds, why Bitcoin mining is the world's #1 ESG asset.
Because of that, I was able to put that project up on https://geyser.fund, which is an incredible site if you haven't checked it out by the way.
Because of that, yes it generated more sats that's given my some more time bandwidth to create a team working on the project.
But more importantly the interest of a potential sponsor who loved the idea of orange-pilling the world's ESG investment committees at Sovereign Wealth Funds, because the ROI of doing so is so big for everyone who owns Bitcoin It's fair to say, the experiment seems to be working.
Having a paid newsletter also allowed me to dedicate more time to deep research, like the current edition, which revealed that Bitcoin mining was never banned in China.
The punchline is, sometimes free is the right model (like putting out high quality content on Nostr for free), and equally sometimes you can serve more people and more causes by charging.
There is no one rule.
But as long as you are maximizing for "what maximizes the success of people and the mission" you'll find the right model.
It's a lesson that's taken me a while to learn!

Hey nostriches, I need your help with some advice.
After 2 years doing my best to counter bitcoin FUD pretty much full time I’ve run out of financial gas to keep doing this.
Wouldn’t be an issue except I have a family and I’m the sole income earner. CH4Capital will eventually pay me something, but at what point is uncertain. Infrastructure deployment on landfills takes a long time and we are still at the site identification stage. I’m fortunate that we do have investments in early stage tech companies that are going well - but no liquidity likely for 4-5 years.
My options seem to be
A. Sell some of our modest stack believing that’ll tide us over to when CH4Capital gets up and running
B. Get a real job - within the bitcoin ecosystem. I’m very grateful that there are a couple of options here.
C. Attempt to get my newsletter to a stage that it’s paying something decent (seems the least feasible option, as it currently turns over four figures p.a).
D. Something that’s staring me in the face but I’m too blind to see it.
Appreciate your thoughts on this.

I’m now working with Elvis Gwaro, an online journalist from Kenya who is writing parts of the newsletter together with me.
Great story behind this
1. I pay him a share of the profits from the newsletter in Bitcoin using lightning. It’s not a lot, but it’s a promising start. Here’s what he told me he’d have to go through if we didn’t. (TLDR: fees, delays and discrimination)
“with Paypal there's always the risk of my account being limited or suspended for reasons best known to the PayPal lords. If I was to receive a significant amount from abroad, for instance, $2,000, yet my account typically transacts less than $500, Paypal will halt my account and request me to explain where the money is coming from.
Their anti-money-laundering measures often flag people who are doing legit online businesses, especially Africans. I have more than 5 friends who had their accounts suspended for 6 months before they could get their money, despite explaining to Paypal where the money came from.
So yes, Bitcoin makes things waaaay easier.
Then there’s fees. Paypal charges a currency exchange fee between 3% to 5%. If you send $100, I'll receive $100 in my paypal account. I think you'll incur a transaction cost on your side too.
If I want to withdraw the $100 from my account, Paypal will give me an exchange rate that factors in the exchange fee. So for instance, currently the USD dollar exchanges for Ksh 130. Paypal will probably offer me between Ksh 124 and Ksh 126. So I only get between $95 - $97 of the $100 and that's how they make bank from that transaction. It's a big fee.”
2. He originally wrote an article that was well written, but FUD-filled about “6 technologies greener than bitcoin”. I respectfully challenged him. Unlike most journalists I’ve challenged he was more curious to learn than to save face, and started asking questions. Long story short, he realised Bitcoin is good for the environment and write so in his next article.
3. He had the idea of making a payment for the newsletter voluntary. And it worked. Plenty of people got behind the newsletter and started paying a modest amount, that now is helping to support me to do deeper research than I’d otherwise have time for and is really helping Elvis as he looks to see if he can make a living out of writing about and researching bitcoin for online magazines and newsletters.
2 ways you can support him that’ll be a potential win-win for you as well.

You’ve probably seen GreenpeaceUSA's Bitcoin report by now, and my response (if you haven't been blocked).
Here’s six things that every environmentalist, Bitcoin advocate, regulator, policymaker and media representative should know about GreenpeaceUSA.
I've had this information for over a year, but have held back on going public with it until now because there were initially signs that GreenpeaceUSA would be open to engaging with environmentalists within the Bitcoin community.
With them now blocking me from commenting on their tweets, all hope of that has now ended. So here's what I can tell you about GreenpeaceUSA, and their campaign that have not been aired publicly until now, and which may surprise you.
Firstly, some context: I’m a former volunteer environmental campaigner with Greenpeace. I once risked arrest to stand up for causes I believed in, including an anti-GMO campaign against McDonalds which was successful within 6 weeks, and hailed as an example of how creative direct action can yield fast results. One of the differences: we talked to McDonalds (something no one at GreenpeaceUSA is currently doing with the Bitcoin community).
I know a number of people in the environmental movement, and I would like to thank them for their honesty in whistleblowing on a thoroughly misguided campaign from GreenpeaceUSA from start to finish.
1. GreenpeaceUSA’s campaign does NOT have the backing of Greenpeace International. In fact, other branches have asked questions of GreenpeaceUSA’s tactics, and even said that their campaign is damaging the Greenpeace brand, and has resulted in the loss of subscriptions.
2. Within GreenpeaceUSA, there are a growing number of voices of discontent. There is a growing division between some of the younger crypto-neutral or crypto-friendly millennial in their base, and the directorship of GreenpeaceUSA
3. As we know, GreenpeaceUSA did receive a $5Million donation from Ripple’s chair Chris Larsen to run an anti-Bitcoin campaign. What you probably do not know is that within Greenpeace, several staff have questioned whether this is ethical, or in the spirit of an organization that says it relies only on grassroots funding in its sign-up pledge.
4. Some members of EWG and SierraClub, particularly younger members, were not enamoured with their organization’s collusion with GreenpeaceUSA’s “Change the Code” campaign. EWG has not engaged in anti-Bitcoin rhetoric since 6 April ‘23.
5. The head of GreenpeaceUSA’s “Change the Code” campaign has stepped down and is no longer any part of GreenpeaceUSA. At the time of his stepping down he was reported by a source within GreenpeaceUSA to be questioning the wisdom of the campaign.
6. Within GreenpeaceUSA, we know from multiple inside sources that the Change the Code campaign has been widely acknowledged to have been “not particularly successful”. GreenpeaceUSA’s campaign got off on the wrong foot right from the start, by antagonising environmentalists within the Bitcoin community, such as me. Here’s its half-time report (TL;DR, the worst performing environmental campaign I’ve ever witnessed). https://bitcoinmagazine.com/culture/greenpeace-environment-attacks-help-bitcoin… Now, the campaign is in more disarray than ever, resorting to tenuous ad hominem attacks against Satoshi Action, based on the discover that one of their supporters is a climate denier. True. Well, guess what: one of their supporters is also a plant-based, tree-hugging, climate-activist & meditation teacher: me. That’s the beauty of Bitcoin: it pulls people in from across the political spectrum: we are as diverse as society itself, and that’s what makes us strong. As I wrote recently, “when the ship you’re standing on is sinking: it doesn’t matter if you’re on the left of right side of it.”
I hoped GreenpeaceUSA would end their anti-Bitcoin campaign before their credibility and relevance to the new generation of millennials they are currently disenfranchising is completely severed.
But it seems at the moment they are more intent on doubling down on misinformation. Their leadership must change for them to ever have hope of becoming a true voice for the environment again.

Left or right?
I was recently reflecting that since getting involved in bitcoin, a lot of the debates I used to have no longer make sense to me. Here’s my attempt to capture why.
You are a passenger on a ship. Your captain informs you "I have good news and bad news for you. Which would you like to hear first?"
Being an pragmatist, you opt for the bad news.
"The ship is sinking" he informs you
"Well, what's the good news?" you venture
"We have decided to give you the choice of which side of the ship you would like your cabin to be on"
In a world where the ship of the global fiat economy is sinking fast - old concepts like "left" and "right" are meaningless.
The question is not, “is the left or right side better”.
The question is "Where's the #%^*^‰ liferaft - and how can I get as many of my friends and family onto it as possible!?"
Of course, if you don't believe the ship is sinking, you'll stay on the ship and have debates with other passengers about which side of the ship is better.
Lifeboats tend to be colored orange. There are more seats on the boat available. But they are starting to fill up: their supply is, after all, limited.
