The fiat mines were a bit crazy this week. Turns out the primary customer troubleshooter and buried cable locator being out for a week effects the ability of the remaining techs to keep up with a regular load of scheduled appointments, splicing new drops, troubles, and locates. Who knew? #tgif

This is 14 cups of cooked keiffer pears. It's a fairly grainy pear, but real nice flavor. Cooked, it tastes like there's vanilla in there in with a great pear flavor.
We're making pear butter with inspiration from a recipe I found online. Ours will be the 14 cups of cooked pear puree, 1 1/2 cup of sucanat, 2 tsp dried orange peel, and 1/2 cup of orange juice.

Does anyone have experience or opinions on 1-2liter barrels for aging wine and/or mead? I've got a gallon of elderberry mead about 2 weeks into primary fermentation and a little under a gallon of very sweet concord wine (tastes like boozy Welch's mixed with Taylor port). I'm thinking about getting a few 1 or 2 liter barrels to age the wine and mead. Are there brands or manufacturers to look at or avoid? I love the tang they get, and it lens well to savory applications as well. I've done cheesy oats like you would grits or mac&cheese by adding lots of butter and shredded cheddar. I bet a parmesan/hard alpine cheese with toasted nuts, sundried tomatoes, some garlic and some fresh basil would be awesome this time of year too.

I think that's happened to my wife before, I'll try to remember to ask I'd she remembers why.
Seems to my mind that it might not rise because the yeasts have consumed most of the sugars and are less active? I wonder if adding a sugar source or re-feeding the dough could revive it?

I'm with you. My 3 year old helps my wife chop potatoes and other vegetables. He's very careful, and he loves to help. The 5 year old once made hot chocolate on the stove by himself. They both frequently commandeer my shears and loppers.

The pastor of a church I attended back in PA once gave a sermon illustration of teaching a toddler "no, hot" when they're near a stove, but it being ridiculous if that toddler, grown and living in a shared apartment, is still fearful of the stove and keeps their roommate from using it with a warning of "no, hot." As we grow in knowledge and understanding, we can understand concepts better, "no, hot" goes from being "because dad said so" to "I need to use this heat source responsibly so I don't hurt myself or start a fire in my apartment." Seems applicable, my mind went there anyway.

It's hard watching parents go through bad health events. My dad had a stroke a little over a year ago and he just isn't the same person now. My mom is so stressed that she's had a few health incidents that could have been worse from ignoring symptoms.

I have all the protein I want in the form of grass-fed beef, pastured chicken and raw milk. Why should I eat out of season (risking a fine and meat spoilage from being too warm) GMO corn and soy fed deer. Any deer that raid my garden will be part of herds that I see grazing the soy fields around my house on a near nightly basis. No thanks.
Protein is easy for me to source, melons are a fun treat.
